Miass
(Russian: МiASS, IPA: [mʲɪˈas]) is a city in Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, located 96 kilometers (60 mi) west of Chelyabinsk, on the eastern slope of the Southern Urals, on the banks of the Miass River. Population: 151,751 (2010 census); [1] 158,420 (2002 census); [6] 167,839 (1989 census). [7]

] In the 19th century, development was driven by the discovery of rich gold deposits in the Urals.
The average annual gold production in the Miass region was about 640 kilograms (1,410 lb). In the mid-19th century, the volume of gold mining decreased, and the development of Miass slowed down. Miass was given city status in 1923[ edit
] In 1941, an automobile plant (which still operates as UralAZ) was built.

Located on the eastern slope of the Southern Urals, at the foot of the Ilmen Mountains, on the river. Miass, 96 km southwest of Chelyabinsk. Railway station.
Near Miass is the Ilmensky Nature Reserve (founded in 1920 as a mineralogical reserve, in 1935 transformed into a complex one).

Historical sketch
It arose in 1773 in connection with the founding of the Miass copper smelter on the river. Miass on the basis of the Miass copper ore deposit discovered in 1754 (the plant was closed in the early 1820s).
The hydronym was originally used in the form Mias; in Soviet times, the spelling Miass became established in use. The origin of the hydronym Mias is apparently very ancient, pre-Turkic; its etymology has not been fully elucidated.
In 1797 on the river. Tashkuturganka, the left tributary of the river. Bolshoi Iremel (near the Miass plant), the first gold deposit was discovered (the modern Leninsky mine, the former Tsarevo-Alexandrovsky mine). In the 1820s. in the river valley Miass, the richest gold placers in the Urals were discovered (one of the world’s largest gold nuggets, the “Big Triangle” weighing 36.2 kg, was found here). The average annual gold production at the Miass mines was about 40 poods.
By the middle of the 19th century. Miass is experiencing a period of growth: crafts and trade are developing.

In 1941, equipment from the automobile plant was delivered from Moscow, and the city received further development.
In 1959, the city of Miass included the working settlements of Miass (PGT since 1938, 5.0 thousand inhabitants, 1939) and Melentyevsky (PGT since 1938, 4.1 thousand inhabitants, 1939).

Architecture, sights
In the old part of the city there is an orthogonal regular layout of the late 18th century. A large pond with dams divides the territory into “dammed” zones. The buildings are dominated by wooden houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries. with balconies and wooden trim. The former mansion of gold miner Simonov and the cemetery church (1889) in pseudo-Russian style stand out. New multi-storey residential areas are being built in the area of the automobile plant.

Economics and education [edit]
Currently, Miass is a major machine-building center. Truck manufacturer UralAZ is one of its most important factories.
UralAZ [edit]
UralAZ produces multi-axle, all-wheel drive off-road trucks and exports 8% of trucks. UralAZ was ranked among the 200 largest companies in Russia in 2000 by sales volume and employs 105,000 people. Founded in 1942, when the ZiS plant was evacuated from Moscow during the Great Patriotic War.
State Missile Center[edit]
The government missile center builds ballistic missile submarines. In 1955 it was moved from Zlatoust, where it was founded in 1947, to Miass.
Tourism [edit]
The old part of the city consists of wooden houses from the 19th century with original balconies, jambs and lintels. The house of the manager of the gold mine, Simonov, has also been preserved.
Lake Turgoyak is located near Miass and is a popular tourist destination with crystal clear water.
Miass has a rich mineralogical museum, as it is located near the Ilmensky Mineral Reserve.
To the east of Miass is the Ilmensky Nature Reserve, a large protected forest. Not far from the forest, trails lead to fresh water springs.
Miass Airport
The city of Miass does not have its own airport. The nearest international airport is Balandino, which is located in Chelyabinsk. The distance from Miass to the airfield is 112 km. The airport operates 24/7 every day.
The airport serves aircraft of major Russian airlines: Azur Air, S7 Airlines, Aeroflot, Azimut, Yamal, Ural Airlines. Popular destinations of regular and charter flights: Moscow, Antalya, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Bangkok. The annual passenger traffic is more than 1.6 million people.
