St. Vvedensky Cathedral (Solvychegodsk)[edit]

Vvedensky Monastery in Solvychegodsk (formerly the Vologda diocese, since 1929 Solvychegodsk is part of the Northern Territory with its center in Arkhangelsk, since 1937 - the Arkhangelsk region).

The Solvychegodsky Vvedensky non-civil monastery (originally in the name of Saints Boris and Gleb) is located in Sol Vychegodskaya (now the city of Solvychegodsk).

The monastery was founded by the Stroganov brothers in 1565 on the banks of the small river Solonikha (Usolki). The beginning of the Vvedensky Monastery is associated with the blessing of Nikander, Archbishop of Rostov and Yaroslavl.

The sons of Anika Stroganov - Yakov, Gregory and Semyon - erected a wooden cathedral in the monastery in 1565-1570 in the name of the Entry of the Mother of God into the temple. The cathedral was consecrated in 1570.

Anika Stroganov donated the “Introduction” icon to the cathedral.

Kotlas district is located in the southeastern part of the Arkhangelsk region at the confluence of two large rivers, the Malaya Northern Dvina and the Vychegda . It borders on the Krasnoborsky, Vilegodsky, Lensky, Ustyansky districts of the Arkhangelsk region, as well as the Vologda and Kirov regions. The administrative center is the city of Kotlas.

The area of the territory is 6.3 thousand sq. km. Population - 22.8 thousand people.

Kotlas district was formed on June 25, 1924. A little earlier, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of October 8, 1923, the district and volost divisions were abolished in the North Dvina province. Instead, districts and agricultural societies were formed. The Kotlas district was created with a center in the city of Kotlas as part of the Metlinskaya, Andreevskaya, Peschanskaya and Vorobinskaya volosts of the Solvychegodsk district, as well as the Zabelinskaya, Udimskaya, Privodinskaya and Votlazhemskaya volosts of the Veliko-Ustyug district. To manage the new administrative-territorial unit, a district executive committee (RIC) and 16 village councils were created.

On March 29, 1928, at the joint plenum of the Kotlas and Solvychegodsky districts, a decision was made to annex the Solvychegodsky district with 13 village councils to the Kotlassky one. In 1931, by the Decree of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and the Northern Regional Executive Committee, 11 village councils of the Krasnoborsky district were annexed to it. In 1934, 93,363 people lived in the area, incl. urban population – 17859 people. 26.6 percent of the population was employed in agriculture, 29.7 percent in industry, construction and transport, and 11 percent in the handicraft industry.

The Northern Railway mainlines provide direct communication Kotlas and Vologda, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk, Kirov, Syktyvkar and Vorkuta.

The Kotlas district is one of the unique territories of the Arkhangelsk region in terms of the wealth of historical and cultural monuments, of which there are about forty. The most significant monuments of Russian white-stone architecture are located in the city-museum of Solvychegodsk : Vvedensky Cathedral , an active temple with a perfectly preserved seven-tier carved iconostasis and the family cathedral of the Stroganov family - Blagoveshchensky , the most valuable monument of Russian stone architecture with preserved frescoes of the 16th century. Currently, the temple complex of the Annunciation Cathedral houses the Solvychegodsk Historical and Art Museum , where priceless exhibits are stored - witnesses to the flourishing of the art of Usolsky masters. The holy temples of Turovtsa are another cultural heritage of the Kotlas region .

On the left bank of the Northern Dvina , eight kilometers from the village of Shipitsyno, there is an amazingly beautiful place called Turovets . On a high hill, surrounded by tall fir trees, there are two churches: Epiphany , built in 1780, and the winter Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God , built in 1815.

Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the city of Koryazhma, where the chains and hair shirt of Longin of Koryazhemsky, the founder of the Nikolo-Koryazhemsky Monastery, are kept; holy spring in the Christopher Hermitage , with the water of which Tsarina Anastasia Romanovna was healed.
