Where to go with children Sights What to do Where to go from Krasnodar in winter Stories and reviews from tourists Where to stay in Krasnodar Excursions in winter |
In 1792, the Kuban lands were granted to the Cossacks by Empress Catherine II - this is how Ekaterinodar, which later became Krasnodar, was founded. The guidebook will tell you about the development of past events. Here we talk about what you can see in Krasnodar today in winter.
Many have heard about the warm climate of Krasnodar. But the trip brings detailed interest: what is winter like in Krasnodar, is it there at all, what does it look like and is it cold? Indeed, in general, the Krasnodar winter is warmer than in other Russian cities.
But it is very changeable, different from year to year. It may come either in November or January, it will last until mid-February or early March, or it may not appear at all. On average, the thermometer stays around +5...-5 °C, but sometimes -15 °C and +15 °C occur. There is sun, cloudiness, and snow. The latter is rather an exception, and the New Year is created by illuminations and fir trees in balls. In general, winter is similar to the off-season in central Russia.

Although streets and parks partially lose their green appearance in winter, many attractions of Krasnodar are accessible at any time of the year. They are located within the boundaries of the historical center, which is convenient for a walking route. Monuments-symbols of the city, ancient merchant architecture, as well as rich museum collections tell its history. City parks will reflect the diversity of local nature. Various cultural and entertainment venues will come in handy for those who come on holiday with children.
Kissing Bridge
The elegant openwork bridge, the image of which appears on many posters, postcards and calendars, is one of the symbols of modern Krasnodar. On its railings you can always see many locks with names engraved. These are symbols of love, harmony and fidelity. According to established tradition, local newlyweds and simply loving couples leave them here. Next to the Bridge of Kisses there is a pier from where you can take a romantic trip around the Kuban on pleasure boats. The crossing also plays the role of an observation deck: from here you will see a picturesque panorama of the entire city, and from the nearby restaurant there are magnificent views of the bridge itself and the beautiful nearby park. The original building and the surrounding landscape look especially good in the evening and at night, when the decorative lanterns are lit.
Where to go to eat in Krasnodar? Cafes and bars
From the heart I tear off my list of delicious places for all occasions. And since everything in life is transitory, except for one thing - coffee - first I’ll list some cool coffee shops:
- Coffee Library is a network with a huge selection of coffee throughout Krasnodar. A cup of espresso costs 130 rubles, a latte from 160 rubles.
- Surf Coffee - delicious and unusual coffee and many desserts, and they also conduct cultural and educational lectures. Baby espresso is inexpensive - only 99 rubles.
- Zetsepi Kofe is another Krasnodar chain of coffee shops. Most of all I like to take a glass of cappuccino (from 145 rubles) to go on the street. Severnaya, 299, lazy cats live here. And on Chapaeva, 88 you will find yourself in the surroundings of the Soviet Union.
Now food - from cheaper to more expensive:
— Tsekh is a very budget cafe with an interesting concept: you pay for entry and eat and drink for ridiculous money: Caesar with chicken costs 149 rubles, carbonara with bacon 169 rubles. And no, this is not a canteen, everything is tasty and at a high level. — Israel Grill is a small eatery of Israeli cuisine. Hummus, falafel, babaganoush, if these words make your mouth water, this is the place for you. Prices start from 100 rubles. — Luka Pizza is the most delicious pizza in Krasnodar; on weekends there is live music in the evenings. Margarita with mozzarella costs 330 rubles. — Ridna Khata is a favorite tavern with local cuisine. They serve Babusina pickles (370 rubles), assorted lard (365 rubles), “Solokhina Chary” salad (350 rubles), hot “Alya de Khokhlya” (395 rubles) and everything in this style - delicious, right? — The Bridge is a restaurant-bar overlooking the Kissing Bridge. Come here in the evening, the view will be amazing - and choose a table on the open terraces. I recommend the roasted camembert salad with peanut cream (630 rubles) and the coconut-mango smoothie (390 rubles). — Skygarden is an open rooftop terrace from where you can clearly see the city. This is a party spot with electronic music and is worth going to for drinks and dancing. A signature cocktail costs 500 rubles.
Small bonus. Write a comment below on this article, and in return I will send you the name of an establishment with cool modern breakfasts (avocado toast, pancakes and poached eggs on the menu) by email!

Galitsky Park
Krasnodar Park is the official name of the park, built with funds from S. N. Galitsky, the founder and owner of the well-known Magnit grocery chain. The park is young, modern, striking in its splendor, scale, and combination of details. It will surprise you at any time of the year or day.
There are thousands of trees in the park, sometimes very bizarre and exotic. To prevent them from freezing, the latter are covered with stylish transparent domes. The trees form dozens of unusual alleys. On winter evenings they light up with billions of lights. The park also pleases with a variety of art objects; more and more new ones appear from time to time. Particularly photogenic are the huge mirror heads “Inner Child”, a real mirror labyrinth and the sculpture “Geolocation” in the form of a geotag drop. The artificial lotuses on the pond and lavender fields are beautiful in the evening illumination. In addition, there are many benches, places for relaxation, meditation, walks with children, skateboarding, and a cafe.

Monument to Catherine II
The monument to Empress Catherine the Great is one of the main attractions of Krasnodar. It appeared on the centenary of the Kuban lands from the day they were donated by the empress in 1792. Catherine in a robe, with a scepter and orb stands on a high pedestal. At its foot stretched a letter of grant. At the base there are figures of Count Potemkin, three Cossack chieftains and a kobzar with a guide. The monument has been restored because, like many other tsarist ones, it was demolished during the Soviet years. Nearby lies a stone at the site of the founding of the Ekaterinodar fortress.

City Garden
The city garden is located immediately behind the monument to Catherine. This is one of the first city parks, established in the middle of the 19th century. Among the venerable trees here there are real long-livers - oaks 400–600 years old, natural monuments. Although most of the plants are without leaves in winter, the garden is cozy and pleasant to walk around. It is decorated with animal sculptures, a rotunda, a sculpture of an angel on a high pylon and a pond with ducks. There are many benches and a cafe on the territory. In warm weather, the Ferris wheel and other attractions are open.

Botanical Garden of Krasnodar
The botanical garden (arboretum) of Krasnodar is located in the western part of the city next to the Kuban Agrarian University and was founded by one of its professors. Its collection includes hundreds of plant species, including exotic ones and those listed in the Red Book. In winter, conifers are especially attractive - pines, yews, cypresses. If there is no snow, combined with green lawns, there is no winter here at all. Other areas resemble late autumn. The greenhouses, which can be visited on a guided tour, display heat-loving plants. The inhabitants of the garden - nimble squirrels and bright peacocks - delight visitors who come for a leisurely walk.

Ancient architecture
A hundred years ago, the image of the capital of the Kuban region was formed by skillful city institutions and merchants' mansions. It is those that have been preserved to this day that today attract the attention of all its guests. Winter is quite convenient for exploring the architecture of Krasnodar. Summer greenery greatly decorates the city, but at +30 °C you don’t want to walk, but rather hide under the air conditioning.
A significant part of the architectural monuments is located in the center, approximately within the boundaries of Postovaya, Oktyabrskaya, Severnaya and Mitrofan Sedin streets.

St. Catherine's Cathedral
A tall and solid red brick church at the intersection of Kommunarov and Mira streets is St. Catherine's Cathedral, the main temple of the Orthodox Church of the region. It was erected at the end of the 19th century. The seven thrones were named after the patrons of the royal family of Alexander III, who had survived a train accident the year before. Services were not held in the cathedral, unlike most churches in the country, for only ten years from 1934 to 1944.

Holy Trinity Cathedral
Cathedral on the street Frunze, 65 was built at the beginning of the 20th century. After the Second World War 1941–1945 it worked until 1950, and after that it served as a salting base for Gorplodoovoshtorg and a sculpture workshop for a local art factory. Services there resumed in the 1990s. Today, a theological seminary operates next to the temple. The cathedral is made of red brick and richly decorated; in the window openings there are images of saints. All volumes are crowned with 11 domes covered with green paint. The original paintings on the walls have been preserved.

Galitsky Park in Krasnodar
Despite its youth, the park, opened in 2021, is very popular among lovers of both active and relaxing holidays. The modern infrastructure brought to perfection and the unique design evoke positive emotions among the most discerning guests, and the careful thought out of each element of the improvement makes it possible to accommodate a huge number of visitors in a small area without the slightest damage to their comfort. The most visited places in the park are a spacious amphitheater, often used for cultural events and photo sessions, an observation deck with a spiral lift, a skate park popular with young people, a children's climbing wall, and a water maze with LED fountains.
What to see in the vicinity of Krasnodar
If you don't have enough attractions in the city itself, you can visit the outskirts of Krasnodar. We recommend visiting such places as the Krasnodar dolmens, Kaverzinsky waterfalls, Dantovo Gorge, Wolf Gate Gorge, Cat Cave, Bogatyrsky Caves. You can also hike through the Sober Bash and Shize mountains, as well as walk along the Lotus Lake.
Krasnodar dolmens
Krasnodar dolmens
You can go to this place either with a tour or on your own. Krasnodar dolmens have incredible energy, but all people here have different sensations. For many, these places are places of power, where all desires come true and answers to questions come.
Krasnodar dolmens are a great place to be alone with yourself, immerse yourself in your sensations, feelings and thoughts. After visiting this attraction, you will feel how much easier you feel mentally. Calm and lightness will appear inside you - feelings that are quite difficult to achieve in our busy lives.
Kaverzinsky waterfalls
Kaverzinsky waterfalls
Kaverzinsky waterfalls can be an excellent option for a weekend hike. The incredibly beautiful waterfalls and picturesque nature of the gorge will not leave any tourist indifferent. The route in these places is quite long, but it is one of the most beautiful near Krasnodar.
If you want to fully enjoy the natural beauty of this city, gather your strength and visit the Kaverzinsky waterfalls. You may be very tired after this journey. However, the effort will be worth the memories that will remain with you after visiting this place.
Dante's Gorge
Dante's Gorge
Dante's Gorge is another very unusual but popular place in the vicinity of Krasnodar. Its length is approximately 100 meters. This gorge received this name in honor of the Italian poet and thinker Dante Alighieri, the author of The Divine Comedy, which depicts the poet’s wanderings through the afterlife.
Visiting this place feels like being transported to another world. For a moment you can forget that you are not far from the Russian city of Krasnodar. The natural beauty of the gorge is simply mesmerizing. You will definitely take away dozens of successful photographs from there.
Wolf Gate Gorge
Wolf Gate Gorge
This gorge is located in the vicinity of the Chibiy farm. It is a small gorge. This place is not very popular among hikers. However, it is perfect for a leisurely weekend walk.
Despite its unpopularity, the Wolf Gate gorge is incredibly picturesque. Its rather narrow passage may cause you a slight fear and discourage you from going further. However, the views that the gorge offers you are worth all the effort.
Mount Sober-Bash
Mount Sober-Bash
This peak is located 100 kilometers from Krasnodar. It is very easy to spot from the highway, and in appearance it resembles a trapezoid. If the weather in the city is good, Mount Sober-Bash can be seen from the high-rise buildings of Krasnodar. Unprepared tourists can walk the route to the top and back in 5-6 hours.
This place is worth your time and effort. At the very top of the mountain you will not find picturesque and beautiful views. However, they will accompany you on your journey to Sober Bash.
Cat Cave
Cat Cave
The Cat Cave is located on Mount Shchetka, not far from the town of Goryachiy Klyuch. There is a version of the name that concludes that before people found this cave, a forest cat lived here. Some suggest that it was a lynx that was found in these areas in the mid-20th century.
There are many legends about this cave. Their source is not only the forest cat that lived in this place. A human skull was found in the Cat Cave, which had been lying there for so long that it had grown into its wall. This place has a creepy atmosphere and is not liked by all tourists who visit it.
Lotus Lake
Lotus Lake
Lotus Lake is the most romantic place in the vicinity of Krasnodar. It is located near the village of Belozerny, very close to the highway. Lotuses were planted in this lake by a resident of the village of Belozerny, who rented this pond in 1933. Indian and Caspian lotuses have taken root in it.
This place is perfect for a romantic date. You will have a beautiful view of the green lotuses that fill almost the entire reservoir. Getting to the lake is very convenient, so you should spend a few hours of your time and visit this attraction.
Bogatyrsky caves
Bogatyrsky caves
These are two small caves that were formed in sandstone compressed over millions of years. To this day, scientists are debating how these caves came about and what they were intended for. It is believed that they were created by man: the shape and size of the caves make scientists doubt their natural origin. They are several small rooms filled with huge amounts of dust.
Bogatyrsky caves are worth visiting with your friends or family. However, do not take children with you under any circumstances: such a place may be dangerous for them. You can take some interesting photos in the caves that will decorate your social networks.
Mount Shize
Mount Shize
Mount Shize offers an incredible view that is worth seeing with your own eyes. Climbing the mountain is quite simple and will not take you much time. This route is suitable for tourists who have a basic level of training. The height of the mountain is 542 meters.
You should definitely get to the highest point of Mount Shize. It offers you a view that makes you feel as if you are in alpine meadows: one side of the mountain is covered with dense forest, and the other with low grass. This landscape is mesmerizing. It is definitely worthy of your attention and effort.
Fountain of Krasnodar
Near the amazingly beautiful musical fountain on Teatralnaya Square it is always lively and fun. There is never a shortage of spectators here: the jets shimmering in different colors attract attention at any time of the day. During the day they sparkle in the sun, and at dusk they become the main participants in an enchanting light show, accompanied by mesmerizing melodies: changing shape and intertwining, the jets create the most incredible compositions with the help of modern computer technology. The largest fountain in Europe is deservedly a source of pride for Krasnodar residents and one of the most striking brands of the city. It is no coincidence that it became the center of many festive events.
Sights of Krasnodar

Kuban embankment in Krasnodar
A beautiful green embankment with decorative lanterns and elegantly decorated lawns, stretching along the wide Kuban, is one of those places worth visiting in Krasnodar. Ideal conditions have been created here for people of all ages to relax. The walking area, thoroughly landscaped after recent reconstruction, is equipped with comfortable benches, neat slopes and observation platforms. Mothers with strollers stroll along picturesque pedestrian paths, children frolic on attractions, pensioners relax in gazebos, and outdoor enthusiasts visit swimming pools and sports grounds. On the embankment there are many famous sights of Krasnodar: the Kissing Bridge - a favorite place for newlyweds, the 30th Anniversary of Victory Park, where rare exhibits from war times are collected, the Turgenev Automobile Bridge with original graffiti and beautiful night illumination.
Pools and boat trips
Let's move closer to the water. There is a rumor among visitors that there is a sea in Krasnodar, but there is no (to my regret). Only those who are not afraid to grow fins and gills swim in the city limits - it’s too dirty. But if the Krasnodar heat gets to you and you want to cool off, go to the pool.

Monument to Shurik and Lidochka
Bronze figures of the well-known characters from Gaidai’s film can be seen in the city center, on Krasnaya Street. The monument is installed opposite one of the largest universities in Krasnodar - Kuban Technological University. The location was not chosen by chance: exemplary students are called upon to set a good example for current students. The sculpture is made in human height so that everyone can make sure that the girl is reading the notes, just like in the film. The attraction is very popular among tourists: every guest of the city considers it necessary to capture himself in a photo in the company of the famous couple in love.
Excursions in winter
If you wish, you can see Krasnodar together with a local resident and local historian - a guide who will tell its fascinating history, guide you along the streets of Krasnaya, Northern and Kuban embankments, show the monument to Catherine II, St. George's Church, Holy Trinity Cathedral and other attractions. The Krasnodar Planetarium is located in a spherical building, giving it a resemblance to a celestial dome. Popular science films are regularly shown in its hall, telling in an accessible and interesting way about everything related to space: planets and their satellites, stars, the Universe, the solar system and much more. The use of a modern projection system and high-quality acoustics of the hall enhance the impression of the audience, creating the effect of being in outer space. Educational films on natural science school subjects, dedicated to the laws of development of the surrounding world, are also no less visual and educational. The planetarium has a telescope for observing celestial bodies.
Krasnodar Regional Art Museum
The rich collection of one of the oldest museums in the North Caucasus, founded by the famous collector F. A. Kovalenko at the beginning of the 20th century, consists of Russian and Western European works of painting, decorative and applied arts, sculpture, and graphics. A significant part of the exhibition is devoted to icon painting, Russian avant-garde of the 20-30s of the last century, Russian landscape painting, and Japanese woodcuts. Interactive materials created for visitors tell in a visual and entertaining way about the contents of the fund and the main stages of the history of the Krasnodar Regional Art Museum. Using modern equipment, virtual exhibitions are regularly held.
Old Ekaterinodar
The second half of Krasnaya begins from the Theater Fountain - old Yekaterinodar (the former name of Krasnodar) with historical buildings.
By the way, on weekends and holidays, part of Krasnaya Street from Teatralnaya Square and below is completely pedestrianized - and then the best entertainment in Krasnodar accumulates here, and even free. Artists, musicians, traders of all sorts of tinsel. And near the Marriott hotel, the local Latin school organizes dances! Did you see Nikolskaya in Moscow during the World Cup? The atmosphere is about the same, only on a more modest scale.
As I mentioned above, historical houses and simply beautiful buildings are concentrated in this part of Krasnaya. I will list the most interesting for tourists:
- High reliefs with fountains in front of the House of Books - you can simply not notice them, but pay attention: they depict scenes from the life of Ekaterinodar residents, they are interesting to look at.
- Now the Central business center, and formerly the Central Hotel - a green building with turrets and spiers. In Yekaterinodar it was considered the most prestigious, built by the rich merchants Bogarsukovs. The facade has been preserved, but inside there are office premises.
- The State Bank building was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The decorated façade contains sculptures, tiled panels, and many small details. Inside, just like a century ago, there is a bank.
- A monument to dogs in love - the lady needs to rub her nose, and the gentleman needs to rub his paw. The sculpture appeared thanks to Mayakovsky, who came to Krasnodar after the revolution. Then many rich townspeople were shot, and their purebred pets wandered around the streets and annoyed the poet. That’s when he called the city “the dog capital.”
The street ends with Pushkinskaya and Cossack Squares with a monument to Catherine II surrounded by (dammit!) Cossacks - a modern reconstruction. At the very end of Krasnaya there is the snow-white Military Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky. As befits Krasnodar attractions, the cathedral was previously located in a different place and was later blown up. The new building - its exact copy - was built in the early 2000s, and a tiny chapel now stands at the original location.
Krasnodar Historical and Archaeological Museum
In 1879, Kuban historian and local historian E.D. Felitsyn founded the Military Ethnographic and Natural History Museum, the fund of which served as the basis for the creation of the Krasnodar Historical and Archaeological Museum in the 30s of the last century. Its rich fund is famous for its unique collections of ancient coins, jewelry, Polovtsian sculptures, ancient Greek ceramics, and weapons. One of the activities of the museum is underwater archaeological expeditions, which make a huge contribution to the development of historical science. Anyone interested in the way of life, customs and culture of the peoples of Russia and the Caucasus should definitely visit this place in Krasnodar.
Krasnodar Academic Drama Theater
One of the largest theaters in Kuban has been very popular among spectators for more than 100 years. Before the revolution of 1917, F. Chaliapin, L. Sobinov, and A. Duncan performed triumphantly on the stage of the theater, then called the Winter Theater. The first play produced in Soviet times was “The Bourgeois” based on the play by Gorky, whose name the theater bears from 1932 to this day. The group's modern repertoire consists of productions of the best examples of the dramatic genre from different countries and times, including fairy tales for children. The theater stage always successfully hosts enterprises and concerts of famous Russian artists.
St. Catherine's Cathedral in Krasnodar
The fate of the famous St. Catherine's Cathedral cannot be called simple. Construction of the majestic temple building with five domes began in 1900, but the consecration took place only 14 years later. The walls of the cathedral were painted by famous icon painters, and the interior was distinguished by rich decoration. During the Soviet years, many valuables were removed from the walls of the church. Soon after this, the cathedral was closed, and a warehouse was placed in its building. The temple reopened during the Great Patriotic War, after the liberation of Krasnodar from occupation. For the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus', it was completely restored. Today, a charitable foundation operates in St. Catherine's Cathedral. Pilgrims from many cities come to the shrines of the temple.
