all posts by the author Saransk (Moksh. Saranosh, Erz. Saran osh) is a city in the eastern part of Central Russia, the capital of the Republic of Mordovia. Located on both sides of the Insar River (Volga basin), 642 km (500 km in a straight line) southeast of Moscow. The area of the city is 71.5 km². Founded in 1641, it received city status in 1780. City Day is celebrated on June 12. coat of arms of the city of Saransk Saransk arose on the shore, surrounded by large sars. The Saranka River, called Sarley in the 17th century, formed a huge swampy area near the city. The word Saransk is based on the word sara - swamp. To put it simply, the name Saransk means a place in the swamps and the city got its name from the name of the Saransk River, which arose earlier.
Saransk was founded in 1641 as a fortress on the southeastern outskirts of the Russian kingdom, on the Atemar abatis line, which was part of a large fortified line built from 1638 to 1653 and stretching from Belgorod to Simbirsk. House of Soviets of the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic On the eastern side of the square in front of the square there is the House of Soviets of the Mordovian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. It was built a little away from the former Spassky Cathedral, destroyed in the 30s. Millennium Square On August 24, 2012, Millennium Square was solemnly opened in Saransk. The “pearl” of the square was the color and musical fountain “Star of Mordovia,” which has no analogues in Russia. An effective addition to the water jets is color and musical accompaniment; in addition, the fountain is equipped with a so-called “barefoot zone”, where the water level is 2-3 cm and where anyone can take off their shoes and take a walk. Also, according to the project, in the dark, it is possible to transmit an image to a vertical sprayed surface of water.
The height of the fountain jets exceeds 40 meters! Until the 18th century, Saransk was divided into settlements, which were also fortified. The city was built in separate estates in two rows along the main roads. Saransk grew quite quickly and developed not only as a military center, but also as a trade and craft center. By the early 60s of the 17th century, the borders of Saransk had already extended to the lands south of the Saranka River and on both sides of the Insary River.

Let's sum it up
Saransk is the cultural capital of the republic, which is not a shame to show to foreigners. Despite the fact that the city is relatively small, it contains many interesting attractions.
The editors of most-beauty.ru ask you to write in the comments what other attractions of Saransk you would include on our list.

Top 5 places worth walking in Saransk in the summer of 2021
Our answer to Zaryadye Park: what will grow in place of construction sites and vacant lots
How we did it We are already accustomed to the fact that Saransk is being built every minute. The key point is next summer, when the guests of the championship (and at the same time you and me) will see the city in all its glory with new sports arenas, hotels and residential neighborhoods. But the city is not only buildings. It is also the sum of open spaces: streets, courtyards, squares, parks. And here we also expect an increase - the area near the stadium will be seriously improved. Evgeniy SHIRCHKOV , an architect and blogger , helped us understand exactly how
Eugene:
The Insar and Tavly floodplains have always had great potential for development. In all master plans, this territory was considered as a large city-wide park, but things did not go beyond good wishes. But now we are on the verge of positive changes. Saransk has always lacked access to water, now we will be able to use empty areas for outdoor recreation, and this will significantly improve the quality of life. We must not forget the urban planning aspect - the floodplain lowlands used to be a serious barrier between the center and Khimmash, but soon they will connect these areas with each other.
Embankment of the Insar River
The stadium will have a real embankment - with fortified banks, slopes to the water, bicycle paths and sports grounds. The riverbed here will be expanded several times and thoroughly cleaned. According to tradition, the authorities did not share any pictures of the project with the townspeople, leaving room for our imagination.
Eugene:
The embankment in this place is a thing in itself. A good embankment should have living edges - dense buildings with shops, cafes and entertainment on the ground floors. Our embankment will run along the stadium fence on one side, and along the highway on the other. And yes, there won't be a single tree there. The only hope is that the townspeople will flock there because of the big water. The bridge along Sovetskaya Street was made pedestrian, but it was not highlighted in any way. But this is a masterpiece of pre-revolutionary engineering art, with openwork reinforced concrete supports. Judging by the pace of construction, work will continue in winter. Therefore, there is a high probability that in a year a lot will fall apart and come unglued.
Park along the Insar River
The coastal strip will become a natural embankment with an embankment and a gravel path, and the mouth of the Saranka will be led into an underground pipe. The information is not 100%, but there is a high probability that the area between the new embankment and the bridge along Nevsky Street will also become a park. Last year, all the undergrowth was cut down there, which means that all that’s left to do is to lay pedestrian paths and install streetlights.
Eugene:
Nice area for a river park, but the main problem is access. It's very difficult to get there! If you don't make several crossings across the railway, the place risks becoming marginal. From the river side it’s the same - at least one pedestrian bridge is needed. But, as far as I understand, no bridges are planned. This is mistake. By the way, I don’t understand how these embankments will look during spring floods. I'm afraid they might not have thought about this, and they would simply be flooded.
Tavla embankment
The construction of the embankment, which had been frozen, resumed in the summer when a new contractor was found. For now, the concrete slopes go into a shallow stream with frogs, but they promise to eliminate this - when the dam is completed, the water level will rise by a couple of meters. It is unknown how this will affect the life of the local muskrat, but it will look more decent.
Eugene:
You shouldn't expect anything supernatural from the Tavla embankment. This will be a quiet green area near the water for residents of Yubileiny. Lawn, paths, a minimum of benches and trees, no descent to the water. I repeat - we need more bridges! In order for the embankment to come to life, bridges must be built at its borders - then it will be possible to create a circular pedestrian route. The existing bridge does not suit me very much - it is located in a random place, and was made very cheaply. And recently, tall metal fences were welded to it, so you can no longer admire the river from the bridge.
Boulevard in the second microdistrict
We wrote about it in detail earlier, but let us only remind you that the boulevard will allow residents of the upper floors to enjoy the beauty of Mordovian ornaments made of multi-colored tiles.
Ecopark on Mokhovaya
The recently opened park has already been tested by barbecue lovers. The test was not passed, which means the park needs to be completed. A ring path with lanterns is good, but is that all that a park can give people?
Eugene:
This is not an eco-park! The prefix only discredits the idea of ecology, and nothing more. I discussed the park in detail on my blog, I won’t repeat it. I will only note that there is no protection from flooding here either. Connections with nearby parks and embankments are also extremely necessary, because public spaces do not work in isolation. They must be connected to a common network. This is not the case. But the worst thing I see is that the work is being done amateurishly - good intentions lose a lot when faced with reality. But the reality is that public spaces are designed and built by people who understand little about it. I recommend taking a closer look at the experience of Tatarstan, where they do not hesitate to invite professionals from Moscow and from abroad, but at the same time think about themselves - local young architects and students are always involved in the design, who absorb new experience and learn new things along the way affairs. And what’s surprising is that they ask local residents what they need in these spaces! As a result, they kill three birds with one stone: they get good projects, train local specialists and help people. In our country, everything is done on the knees, and no one is interested in the opinions of citizens and experts. And I'm afraid the chances are lost - federal money is not endless.
We thank the “Aerial Photography Saransk” group for the photo from the quadcopter.
