City of Gagarin: sights and interesting places (with photos)

City of Gagarin attractions and interesting places
Historical information. The city of Gagarin is part of the Smolensk region. Its area is 14.46 km/sq., population is about 29 thousand people.

Until 1968 it was the city of Gzhatsk. It is located on the Gzhat River (Volga Basin), hence the name of the city. The order to establish a pier there was given by the great Emperor Peter 1 in 1703. In the middle of the 17th century, the settlement was called Gzhatskaya Sloboda. Under Catherine II, the settlement was transformed into the district town of Gzhatsk.

During the Patriotic War of 1812, Gzhatsk was burned by the Napoleonic army, and the famous partisan detachment of Denis Davydov operated in the vicinity of the city. In 1817, Gzhatsk was restored. During the Great Patriotic War, the city was occupied by invaders.

City of Gagarin. Attractions

The city of Gagarin is not rich in architectural monuments. This is not Murom, Arzamas, Kolomna or Vyazma. All that remained in the city after the Nazi occupation was a couple of churches. But I will include the city of Gagarin (formerly Gzhatsk) on the list of must-see attractions in the distant Moscow region. You need to go to Gagarin for its museums. The exhibitions there vividly and emotionally tell about the life of Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin and his parents. After meeting them, it seems that the first cosmonaut became not just a good friend, but also a close person.

But museums are museums. How interesting is the city of Gagarin for travelers? How much time should you spend on Gagarin and is he worth the trip? Each traveler will answer this question independently, based on useful (and not so useful)
