Where is Stavropol?

Stavropol is the capital of the Stavropol Territory.
The city is located in the North Caucasus, on the valleys and hills of the central part of the Ciscaucasia, in the upper reaches of the Tashla River. Stavropol is also located at the highest point of the Ciscaucasia - on the watershed of the basins of two seas: the Caspian and Azov. From south to north, the territory of Stavropol extends for 16 km. The length of the city border is 165 km. The approximate population is 433 thousand people. The total area of ​​Stavropol is 171 square kilometers. Nearest large cities: Maykop, Cherkessk, Essentuki. Stavropol is located in the southern part of the Russian Federation, which determines the climate of the territory. Most of the time the city is dominated by solar heat. The annual precipitation rate is 556 mm, the heights of points above sea level range from 230 to 660 meters.

At the same time, a village and a civilian settlement arose here. In 1785, the civilian settlement turned into a district city of the Caucasus region, in 1822 the center of this region was moved to Stavropol, in 1847 the Caucasus region was renamed the Stavropol province, and Stavropol - a provincial city.

Modern Stavropol is a cultural, business and industrial center of the region, which successfully combines the delights of a cozy city with numerous squares, boulevards, parks, a vast forest area and the bustling rhythm of life of a modern urban district.

The city belongs to the category of medium-sized cities in Russia; 433.8 thousand people live in it (as of January 1, 2017), which is 15.5% of the region’s population. Population density – 1793 people per 1 sq. km.

Stavropol is a multinational city, home to representatives of more than 100 nationalities and ethnic groups (according to VPN-2010). The bulk of the population is Russian (87.9%), there are also 4.5% Armenians, 1% Ukrainians, and 0.6% Jews and Greeks each.

The regional capital is the center of concentration of youth. The city is home to 39% of the population aged 14–35 years, while in the region as a whole it is 30.9%. The average urban household size is 2.7 people. The average age of city residents at the beginning of 2021 was 37.1 years. Stavropol residents of working age make up 63% of the city’s total population. In 2021, 2,582 marriages were registered in Stavropol, 6,282 babies were born, in 6 months of this year – 1,055 and 2,656, respectively.

According to the results of the All-Russian competition for the title of “The most comfortable urban (rural) settlement in Russia” held in 2021, Stavropol took first place in the category “Urban settlements (urban districts) that are administrative centers (capitals) of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation” with the presentation of a diploma from the Government of the Russian Federation I degree.

The southwest, west and north of the city are built up with multi-storey high-rise buildings, which form residential areas with complete infrastructure. Private, mostly elite residential buildings are located in the areas of the Tashla and Mamaika rivers. They do not spoil, but on the contrary, decorate the modern architecture of the city with intricate designs and multi-colored finishing materials.

In the area of ​​Dostoevsky and Serov streets there is a small village of multi-storey buildings, built for employees of the airborne assault regiment, which is stationed in the city. The 204th block, which can be seen on the map of Stavropol with houses in the south-east of the city, is also considered a residential area, in which the main housing stock consists of “high-rise buildings”.

Historical monuments are located in the city center. These include the Museum of Local Lore, the Tiflis Gate, and the monument to General Ermolov. Guests of the city are greeted by the amazingly beautiful railway station building, which in itself is an architectural monument.

Stavropol International Airport is located 14 km northeast of the city center. From there there are flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg and Rostov-on-Don.

Federal highways pass through Stavropol:

  • P216 “Kalmychka” is a federal highway. The route connects 3 large cities: Astrakhan, Stavropol and Elista. The road originates in Kochubeevsky. The final point of the route is Astrakhan. Road surface: asphalt.
  • P217 "Caucasus" is a highway that has the status of an object of federal significance. The total length of the route is 1,118 km. It is part of two European routes: E50 and E119. The road starts at Pavlovskaya station and passes through Grozny, Makhachkala and Mineralnye Vody. The final point of the route is the border with Azerbaijan. What is Stavropol famous for?

First of all, the city of Stavropol is known for being the Little Motherland of the first and last president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev. In the local House of Culture you can find a portrait of the President of the Union. Also in this city was born the Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Yuri Andropov.

Among the attractions, it is worth noting the monument to the Red Guard Soldier, which was erected on Fortress Hill in the 1970s. The monument was erected in honor of the liberation of Stavropol from the White Guards. In the central part of the city there is Alexander Square - the busiest square in the city. The square received its name in honor of Emperor Alexander II. In the center of Alexander Square there is a stele with a figure of a guardian angel.
