For most, the Bologoye station is just an intermediate point on a train journey. The Bologians themselves joke that “the curb ends and the curb begins,” hinting at the city’s location halfway between Moscow and St. Petersburg. During the war years, Bologoy suffered greatly, and today almost no historical monuments have been preserved here - there weren’t that many of them. But still, the city is pleasant and in some places even beautiful: especially in those places adjacent to the picturesque Lake Bologoe.

The buildings of the Bologoye railway junction, which stretch for several kilometers, should also be considered one of the city’s attractions: this is a real open-air museum for railway fanatics.

Bologoye is a small town with a rich history.

The name “Bologoe” has Slavic roots. "Bologii" means good. The first official mention of the village of Bologoye above Lake Bologim is found in records dating back to 1495. Then, by order of Ivan the Third, a land census was carried out.

But people lived in this territory long before this mention. This is evidenced by archaeological finds. Scientists claim to have found five cultural layers here, the oldest of which dates back to the third millennium BC. Sites of ancient people, as well as stone tools and other artifacts were found here at the end of the nineteenth century.

Later, Finno-Ugric tribes lived in this territory, then the Slavs came. Each culture left its traces. Thus, two settlements built by Finno-Ugric tribes, dating back to the first millennium AD, were found. And the trace stones, deified by our ancestors, became a monument to the ancient Slavs. Footprints are visible on the stones, which were considered to be God's footprints, and the moisture accumulating in these depressions was revered as healing.

Bologoe is a place for researchers and archaeologists. The village of Bologoe was located on the way between Novgorod. Tver, Moscow. Numerous invaders marching on rich cities certainly passed through these lands, ruining them and taking the local population captive.

Neighborhoods of Bologoe

About 35 km from Bologoe there is the town of Mshentsy, famous for its clean springs. The Mshensk springs have been known for a long time and were revered as sacred. According to legend, there are only seven springs, but one has been landscaped: a wooden Kazan chapel has been erected above it. Its history is also connected with the legend about the discovery of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God: the image once appeared in the water of springs. Now they collect water from the springs, and ablutions are carried out in the nearby fonts, all year round: the temperature of the Mshensk water is low, but always constant, and in winter the fonts do not freeze. Mshensky springs are included in the number of natural monuments, and their water, according to the results of the examination, is recognized as the cleanest in all of Central Russia.

About 45 km from Bologoe, near the village of Filimonovo, there is a natural monument - the Filimonovo fountain. This is a hydrogen sulfide spring, the water of which is considered healing. There is a recreation area next to the source.

Impetus in development

With the strengthening of the Russian state, life improved. Until the beginning of the nineteenth century, people lived peacefully, but extremely poorly. It is difficult to imagine what the fate of the village would have been if the construction of a railway line from Moscow to St. Petersburg had not begun in the 40s of the nineteenth century.

This construction became a turning point in the life of the village. In Bologoye, the buildings necessary to ensure the smooth functioning of the railway were built. Since then, Bologoye has become a city of railway workers. And to this day he is.

The development of the station proceeded quickly. Already at the end of the nineteenth century, one of the first railway schools in the country was opened here, where children from noble families were enrolled. There was also an elementary school. And in 1876, the first railway hospital in Russia opened.

The twentieth century is the century of military and labor glory

Despite the remoteness of Bologoye from the capitals, this settlement has always played a key role in the history of the state. The railway workers accepted the ideas of the revolution and sided with the Bolsheviks. It was from this station that the Tsar's train of Nicholas II was taken into custody, after which the Tsar signed a document of abdication.

On June 3, 1917, Bologoye received city status. But now City Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of August, on the eve of Railway Day. On November 3, 1917, an armored train with soldiers approached the station to help the rebel Moscow cadets. The railway workers drove the train to a dead end, where the White Guards were defeated by the Red Army soldiers who arrived in time.

Residents of the city repeatedly proposed innovative ideas, which were then implemented everywhere. Also, Bologoye residents were the first to propose measures to eliminate illiteracy throughout the country. The idea was supported by the government and a wave of learning swept across the country.

Tragic pages during the Great Patriotic War

The war years became a severe test for Bologoe. Ammunition, food and other cargo went through the station to the front. And the wounded and evacuees were taken back to the rear. The city was a strategic object that the Nazis planned to capture and launch an attack on Moscow from there. Already on the first of July 1941, bombs rained down on Bologoye. And in total during the war years, five hundred and twenty-seven raids were recorded, in which one thousand and ninety-two aircraft were involved. The total number of bombs dropped exceeded three and a half thousand.

Seeing that it was impossible to take the station, the Nazis gave the order to destroy the “damned” Bologoye. For ten days from the thirteenth to the twenty-third of March 1943, there was continuous bombing. A report was sent to the headquarters of the German command that “the Bologoye station has been wiped off the face of the earth.” But the railway workers, during short breaks, restored the tracks along which the trains again walked. The station did not close for more than two hours.

In addition to air raids, sabotage groups were also dropped into the town. Two hundred and twelve groups were destroyed on the approaches to the station. No matter how hard the fascists tried, they failed to occupy Bologoye and break the spirit of the railway workers.

When the Nazis were driven back from Moscow, the restoration of the railway junction and the establishment of peaceful life began. The city grew and prospered. Now more than twenty-five thousand people live in Bologoye. The railway is a city-forming enterprise. And residents of both capitals flock to these beautiful places to relax.

Bologoe: is it time to change something?

It seems that officials of the Bologovsky district cannot cope with the problems that have befallen them. A popular vote launched on social networks yielded amazing results.

Our newspaper continues to closely monitor the situation in Bologoye, especially since recently this town between Leningrad and Moscow has become almost the main supplier of breaking political news in the Tver region. Here a conflict flares up between the executive and representative powers.

Chapter

Let us recall that the main representative of the executive branch, the head of the Bologovsky district Gennady Lomaka, was previously deputy to the mayor of Tver Alexei Ogonkov and oversaw issues of housing and communal services and housing policy, architecture and construction in the regional center. In June 2021, the official was appointed acting head of the Bologovsky district of the Tver region. Six months later, the competition commission nominated Gennady Lomaka as one of the candidates for the post of head of the Bologovsky District municipality, and the deputies of the district council supported his candidacy. On January 28, 2021, he took the oath of office and officially took office.

In his post, Gennady Lomak replaced Alexander Kozlov, who resigned. At one time, we devoted a number of critical articles to this official, who clung to the chair of the district head. We won’t go into their details, let’s just say that Alexander Kozlov and his team brought the Bologovsky district almost to bankruptcy. Gennady Lomaka was sent to this territory as an anti-crisis manager, designed to improve the economic situation in the municipality.

This is what Governor Igor Rudenya said to Gennady Lomaka in his parting words: “First of all, it is necessary to analyze the state of affairs. Priority attention should be paid to the budget and the road sector. The third direction of work is the continuation of modernization of the housing and communal services sector. Another important block is the development of medicine. Our task is to work for results.”

Let’s face it, at that time we supported the new head and hoped that he would be able to radically change the situation in the depressed area, for which there were all the prerequisites. Very serious money from the regional budget was allocated to the municipality... Unfortunately, Gennady Lomaki, in our opinion, failed to achieve a fundamental turning point. Instead, the Bologovsky district is now rocked by scandals between the executive branch and deputies, and the population continues to suffer from poor living conditions and economic decline. Which is further aggravated by the pandemic crisis.

Dips

Today, the regional news feed is replete with negative messages from the city of Bologoye. Here is a far from complete list of notes only in our newspaper during the years of Gennady Lomaki’s reign: “Bologoe: an environmental disaster”, “Bologoe. And let the overhaul wait!”, “In the city of Bologoe, residents of a dilapidated house have been waiting for resettlement since 2012,” “In Bologoe, the ONF is seeking repairs to a new house that turned out to be in disrepair,” “In Bologoe, ownerless sewer networks were discovered,” “In Bologoe, residents of a dilapidated house since 2014 they have been risking their lives due to bureaucratic delays”, “The administration of the Bologovsky district will be forced to repair the roads”...

Hundreds of residents of the city of Bologoye do not live, but suffer in dilapidated housing with no hope of getting new apartments. But even those who are lucky enough to become owners of new square meters suffer from the sloppiness of builders who built new houses with gross violations of standards. This, for example, happened to the residents of an apartment building in the Zavodsky microdistrict of Bologoe. For several years since the residents moved in under the program for relocation from emergency housing, the apartments on the top floor of the building have been regularly flooded, and roof leaks and construction defects have not been corrected. The authorities did nothing. It took the intervention of activists of the All-Russian Popular Front, who wrote a statement on this fact to the district prosecutor's office.

The media write about the inhumane conditions in which patients of the Bolgovskaya Central District Hospital are treated. Looking at the video footage from this hospital, the hair on your head stands on end. It seems impossible for such medical institutions to exist in Russia in the 21st century. The wards are shabby little rooms with rotten frames on the windows from which the wind whistles, crumbling plaster and tattered linoleum. The beds have unplaned boards. If you believe this video posted on social networks, then our prisoners live better than the patients of the Bologovo Central District Hospital.

Do you remember that the governor set Gennady Lomaka the task of developing housing and communal services and medicine in the Bologovsky district? Developed and developed... We can safely say that these industries have completely failed.

On November 29, 2021, the patience of the deputy of the Council of Deputies of the city of Bologoe, Irina Fingerman, could not stand it. Still on the same social networks, she wrote a message that is more like a cry from the heart.

Here are excerpts from this message (the author's spelling and style have been preserved):

“In Bologoye the whole world and Russian nightmare is in miniature. The other day, an elderly woman, but full of strength and thirst for life, was knocked to death while walking to the bus stop on the street. Mira. Have you seen this peaceful street? For a long time it had a military appearance and was impassable, but recently they made repairs, leaving the road without sidewalks. Cars are being driven, people are dying.

On the main street of the city there are sidewalks, curbs, fences and lighting, and even now traffic lights. All the other streets and the people on them survive as best they can..

So the municipal unitary enterprise “Bani” has been ordered to live a long time; the district administration has not included a single penny in the draft budget for 2021! What is this if not sabotage?

Municipal Unitary Enterprise "Dorservice" remains without municipal orders, which means its bankruptcy is already looming on the horizon...

There is dirt everywhere from leaves, grass and cut branches. All this will go away in winter. There is garbage all around in parks and courtyards. One gets the impression that our hometown is being turned into a latrine to relieve the financial needs of the head of the district, Lomaki G.A. Just look at the most interesting scan with information about preparations for the winter period. If usually the budget for the necessary work included about 4 million rubles, now it is only 700 thousand. As they say, the economy should be economical. Well, well, it’s a donut for them, but for you and me it’s just a hole from it.

Bologoe has never been so disfigured. Something, of course, is being done, but this something is not being completed...

Gennady Aleksandrovich is not a local person, sometimes one gets the impression that he is taking revenge on the Bologovites for the fact that the governor exiled him so far from Tver. So the fence opposite the administration, more reminiscent of a cemetery, was perceived by the people as a slap in the face...”

The deputy confirmed her appeal with documents. Irina Fingerman attached a survey to her post, where she invited people to express their position regarding the head of the district. To date, more than seven hundred people have voted, which is a huge number for a small town. 93 (!) percent of citizens voted for the option: “Lomaka, go away!” This is a complete fiasco of an official!

Conflict

What should a responsible municipal employee do in this case? In our opinion, there are two options for the development of events. Put your resignation letter on the table or meet with residents of the Bologovsky district, explain your program of action to get out of the crisis and ask for a little more time to put it into action. This could be done, for example, through the regional newspaper “New Life”, which today has a very strong position in the local information field. Perhaps the people would have heard Gennady Alexandrovich, but he chose a different path...

Literally two days after Irina Fingerman’s post appeared on an information portal registered overseas and known in narrow circles for its gossip and digging through other people’s underwear, a response publication appeared. There, an anonymous author throws mud at several Bologovo deputies, accusing them of almost committing crimes and calling them shadow “godfathers” of the city and merchants from the dashing nineties. At the same time, as usual, the author of this libel does not bother himself with any evidence. He is not even satisfied with the fact that local business is developing in the city of Bologoye. He complains that federal networks are not allowed there. In general, everything is thrown together in order to pour more information dirt on the people’s representatives and divert the attention of residents from the failures of the local leadership.

We are aware that not all deputies of the Bologovsky district are white and fluffy. Moreover, we ourselves have questions for many of them. But we must remember that they were elected by the people and entrusted with the right to represent the interests of citizens in the state structure. Does an anonymous scribbler have the right to pour buckets of slop on them without evidence?

It is possible that Gennady Lomaka is not involved in this libel, but it’s hard to believe. The timing of the two publications coincided too much. In addition, we know the close relationship of some representatives of the Bolog administration with the owner of the American information portal.

However, we will be happy to be wrong. However, we, alas, are not mistaken in the fact that things in the Bologovsky district today are very bad and it is again on the verge of economic and communal collapse. So, maybe it’s really time for Gennady Lomaka to think about leaving? And devote himself, for example, to fishing, which he loves so much, judging by his profile on social networks...

The city's attractions

The city has many attractions that visiting tourists can admire. So, at the station, there is a steam locomotive parked forever, which is a symbol of the courage and fortitude of the railway workers who did not give up during the harsh years of the war.

On the shore of the lake there is a monument to the Bologovians who died during the Great Patriotic War. On the station square there is a bust of Vladimir Vysotsky, who loved to relax in the local forests and by the lake. He sincerely admired the beauty of nature.

There are many churches and chapels in the town, including the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, built in 1885, the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity, built back in 1808, the Chapel of Tikhon of Zadonsk, built in honor of the birthday of Tsarevich Aleskey and consecrated in 1904. As well as a memorial chapel, opened in memory of those killed in the terrible fire.

On February 20, 1911, in one of the city’s clubs, where people came to watch a film show, a fire occurred that claimed the lives of more than 60 people, 43 of whom were children. In memory of this event, on the site of the burned club, a memorial chapel of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God was erected, which still serves as a reminder to city residents of that terrible tragedy.

Bologoe

Don’t try to enter “Bologoe” in the Booking search bar, nothing will come up. Didn’t I say that Bologoye is for big originals? :). Places to stay overnight can be counted on one hand (one hand).

Housing outside the city

Personally, I advise you to live outside the city if possible. Firstly, there is nothing worthwhile in the city itself anyway. Secondly, since you have already arrived in Bologoye, why not take a break from the metropolis in the forest on the shore of the lake? Of course, this is possible if you have a car and/or time.

Outside the city there is, firstly, “Zaimka” (20 minutes from the city center by car or 54 minutes by city bus), and secondly, the hotel and tourist complex “Kinogorodok” (50 minutes from Bologoye by car). I couldn’t find a public transport route until recently, but try calling there and asking if there is one.

In “Zaimka” the prices are quite Moscow: from 2,800 rubles per day for a double room. This is the base in the photo below.

In Kinogorodok from 1,200 rubles for a double room. The wooden complex is stylized as an ancient settlement; movies about Rus' are sometimes filmed there (hence the name). This is what it looks like, a functioning church.

There are also small park hotels on the lakes. In places of this type there is always a barbecue, a bathhouse, and sometimes they even offer excursion tours around Bologoye and the surrounding area.

This is how the Ozerny tourist center in the Bologovsky district looks ascetic :).

Housing in the city

Some websites still contain information about the Oktyabrskaya and Bologoe hotels at the same time, but in fact they are one and the same hotel. It’s just that in Soviet times it was called “Oktyabrskaya”, and now “Bologoe”. She does not have a website or the ability to book a room on Booking, only a landline phone. Now you understand that Bologoe knows how to surprise :).

The photo shows the Bologoye Hotel. It looks simple, without any frills, but the rooms there are about the same as in Moscow. I specifically called this hotel and asked how much a simple double room cost. The woman at the reception replied that the cheapest one would cost 2,600 rubles, and this despite the fact that the amenities are on the floor. Forgive me, but 2,600 for a double room in Bologoye without amenities is robbery in broad daylight :).

There is also a rest room at the station, which can be used as a budget option for overnight accommodation. Three months ago the price of a single room at the station was 750 rubles, a double room - 600 rubles per day. It is possible to rent a room for 3, 6 and 12 hours, it will be even cheaper.

In the video below, a man talks about what the break room looks like and shows it. In Bologoe itself, this is the most budget option. Check to see if someone will be moving in with you, because sometimes when you buy a place in a double room, you get a neighbor as a gift, so if you want to live alone, you need to voice this and get the option of single occupancy.

You can also look for private houses and apartments for rent on Bologovo city websites. But I can’t say that this is a very popular service.

Housing in a nearby village

If you are by car or want to spend the night in the middle of the road in the Tver region, then the choice of places will increase significantly. The most options are in Tver, but it’s about an hour and a half from Bologoye by train, train or car. An hour's drive away is the tourist town of Valdai, and half an hour away is Vyshny Volochek, where there are good hotels.

You can also try to stay in Ostashkov, where there are also recreation centers and guest houses, and this city is located on the route of the Bologoe-Polotsk railway, for which it is worth taking a trip to Bologoe. As an option, you can come to Bologoe, take a train ride on the Bologoe-Polotsk line to Ostashkov through amazingly beautiful surroundings, look at the old train stations and stops (travel time is about 3 hours), spend the night in Ostashkov and go back to Moscow or St. Petersburg.

You can view hotel offers in cities neighboring Bology on this website, and book the room you like on the same Booking. It is more convenient to look for local housing advertisements here.

Conclusion

On Booking, of course, you can search for housing not only in Bologovo (you won’t find anything there), but also in the Bologovo district - the site finds several options for this request. But still, if you are not by car, I would advise using the only hotel in the city center or the rest room at the station. If you have time, it’s better to get to “Zaimka” (by bus) or “Kinogorodok” (call by phone for details on how to get there by public transport). Well, when you are by car, finding housing will not cause any particular difficulties: either the two options indicated above outside the city, or the surrounding cities.

Interesting information

In addition to Vysotsky, who dedicated poetry to this place, Bologoe is mentioned in other works. The plot of the novel “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy is connected with the Bologoye station. Filming of the film of the same name also took place here.

Armenian writer Lusine Vayachyan wrote the novel “Balagoe”, the action of which partially takes place in these places

Marshak’s work, “He’s so absent-minded”, well known to everyone since childhood, also could not do without mentioning the famous railway station.

In the 80s, the VIA song “Jolly Fellows” - “Bologoe” - thundered throughout the country. Thanks to this song, even those who had never traveled by rail from St. Petersburg to Moscow learned about the Bologoye station.

Is Bologoe bowing?

Probably everyone in our country knows that Bologoye is a city and a railway station “somewhere between Leningrad and Moscow.” However, when it comes to this city, you involuntarily ask the question: how to correctly pronounce its name? “The train left Bologoye”, “from Bologoye” or “from Bologoye”?

After the Nevsky Express crash, one of the reporters noted that the crash occurred “not far from Bologoe.” And indeed, the word “Bologoe” is very similar to a neuter adjective - which, by the way, historically it is. According to Wikipedia, the name “Bologoe” comes from the Old Russian word bologoy “good, pleasant”, which was later replaced in Russian by the Church Slavonic variant blagoy. So, it’s not far from Bologoe, then?

However, the residents of the city of Bologoye themselves claim that the name of their city is not inclined . The author of these lines specifically asked his friend from the city of Bologoye whether the name of their city was inclined, and received a negative answer. One of the participants in the “Railway Club” forum speaks out equally categorically against declining the name of his city (see discussion here). True, another participant in the same forum immediately corrects him, pointing out that on Gramota.ru the name Bologoe is indicated as inflected (genitive case - Bologoe).

Wikipedia offers us a compromise option: “The name Bologoe is used in both indeclinable and indeclinable form.” However, in the same article, literally a line below, there is the following sentence: “There is a common joke according to which in Bologoe “the curb turns into a curb.”

Thus, from the point of view of the norm, it turns out to be preferable to decline the name of the city Bologoe Bologoe. And why shouldn’t we decline a word that is historically an adjective? We bow down the names Vidnoe, Otradnoe and the like, and we have no doubts about it.
