About the city

The city of Essentuki is an administrative-territorial unit of the Stavropol Territory, a resort of federal significance - Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of January 17, 2006. No. 14 “On the recognition of the resorts Essentuki, Zheleznovodsk, Kislovodsk and Pyatigorsk, located in the Stavropol Territory, as resorts of federal significance and on the approval of regulations on these resorts.”

Essentuki is the most popular drinking balneological resort. Salt-alkaline mineral waters “Essentuki-4”, “Essentuki-20”, “Essentuki-17”, “Essentuki-nova” and sulfur-alkaline “Essentuki-1-Burovaya” have earned him well-deserved world fame. The resort rightfully occupies a leading position in the country in terms of the effectiveness of treating diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and diseases associated with metabolic disorders. The waters of the springs are used for drinking treatment, baths, irrigation, and inhalations.

In 1848, the first 300 bottles of mineral water were sent to Nikolaev to Admiral M.P. Lazarev. Already in the 1860s, bottles of Essentuki water were sent to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov, Vladikavkaz, and Tiflis. Essentuki mineral water received universal recognition in Russia, and its sale provided the treasury with significant profits. Essentuki waters were also highly valued abroad. The company that exported them had its warehouses in Paris, London, Prague and other European cities. In the early 1870s, the constant sale of water was established in almost all major cities of Russia. Currently, traditions are preserved; there are 3 mineral water bottling plants in the city.

Throughout its life, the city made new friends - representatives of various nationalities, accepting their culture, language and customs with respect and goodwill. The city is home to Russians, Greeks, Georgians, Armenians, peoples of Dagestan and the North Caucasus republics. Currently, the population of the city of Essentuki is more than 109,000 people.

Every year, a whole range of measures is implemented to improve the socio-economic situation in Essentuki. Its goal is a real and qualitative improvement in the standard of living of all residents of the resort city.

The city continues to develop rapidly. The main components of success for Essentu residents are self-confidence, hope for the support and understanding of like-minded people and citizens.

Brief historical background

The fathers - the discoverers of healing springs - the doctor of the Moscow Pavlovsk hospital Friedrich-Joseph Haas, who described two Buguntin springs in 1810, and the professor of the St. Petersburg Medical-Surgical Academy Alexander Petrovich Nelyubin in 1823, who discovered and studied 23 springs of mineral water in the valley of the Kislushi river , predicted a brilliant future for the city, calling it “Russian Selters and Vichy.”

The year of birth of the city is considered to be 1825 after the founding of the large village of Essentukskaya on the Bugunta River in 1826. The use of these waters (very little at first) began. The area with mineral springs officially became part of the village's communal land allotment. However, for a long time the sources remained somehow in the shadows.

The Essentuki village, located half a mile from the springs, grew rapidly as a result of the influx of new settlers, and its residents became rich through trade, gardening and servicing coursework (as vacationers at the resort were called). In 1846, by order of Count Vorontsov, the village was expanded to the northeast and moved closer to the springs.

Since 1847, the mineral springs were removed from the jurisdiction of the Cossack Army and the Resort Medical Park was laid out in the surrounding area. It was during these years that the city finally decided on the choice of its life’s work - it became a city-healer, and is faithful to this holy profession to this day.

The godfather of the resort city was the doctor, physiotherapist, balneologist, public figure Mikhail Stepanovich Zernov, who in 1886 was invited as a consultant to the Kav-Minvody. To create a modern institute in Essentuki, equipped with the latest equipment, Zernov traveled to famous European resorts, adopted what was useful in organization and treatment methods, mastering new medical equipment. In Germany, he purchased electrophoresis devices, and brought a shower from the French resort of Vichy, now known as Charcot's shower. Zernov also met with Gustav Zander, an enthusiast of treatment using simulators.

In 1893, a railway line from Mineralnye Vody to Kislovodsk passed through Essentuki, the arrival of sick people increased sharply, and the problem of housing for vacationers became acute. On the initiative of M.S. Zernov, the government carried out another “alienation” of Cossack lands, on part of which the New or English Park (now Victory Park) was opened in 1903, on the rest, to the north of the Resort Medical Park of the park, plots were allocated for summer cottage construction.

By 1917, a beautiful holiday village emerged in the current Resort area, where most of the buildings were small architectural masterpieces. For example, the dachas enjoyed great popularity among visitors and residents of the resort: “Desired”, which belonged to E. M. Figurova (wife of the famous baritone P. P. Figurov), where Chaliapin, Rachmaninov, Stanislavsky and many other figures of Russian art visited; Nest” of the Cossack captain I.G. Zimin, “Capri”, “Eldorado”, “Golden Mound”, “Highland”, “Herringbone”, “Flower Garden”, “Handsome”, etc. Many of them decorate the city today.

The year of Essentuki's majority is considered to be 1920, the year it was awarded the status of a city. As an adult and established resort city, in 1933 it switched to year-round service for vacationers and began to operate at full capacity, almost doubling its capacity.

In 1933-34 As a result of deep drilling in the Resort Medical Park, large reserves of highly saturated carbon dioxide water, similar to the Kislovodsk Narzan, were discovered, which made it possible to organize the widespread use of carbon dioxide baths. This allowed Essentuki to become not only a drinking resort, but also a versatile balneological resort.

Together with the entire country, Essentuki survived the difficult years of the Great Patriotic War, becoming a hospital city. 39 hospitals of different years of formation were opened with 6,500 beds, 86 thousand wounded were treated in them, 2/3 of whom returned to duty.

In the post-war years, the city found its feet, grew and built new health resorts. In 1955, it was decorated with the main entrances to the Resort Medical Park by architect P.P. Eskova. The architecture of the cascade of fountains and multi-flight staircase is emphasized by planted trees and flowers. In 1963 A folk museum and an artificial lake have been created in the city. In January 1980, the Touring Theater was opened, the largest in the North Caucasus.

Like the whole country, the stormy 90s became a difficult period for the city... But thanks to our hard work, determination and optimism, our resort came out of all the trials with honor. It was in 1990 that the grandiose drinking gallery “Pyatysyachnik” (the area of the Victoria sanatorium), designed for 5,000 visits per day, received its first vacationers. In the early 2000s. A new arboretum began to form here. Its ideological inspirer and main author was the head physician of the sanatorium, Boris Petrovich Khinchagov. The territory is decorated in the style of a French park with alleys, walking paths, and flower beds (the area of the flower beds is 14,270 sq.m.). The park has more than 200 species of medicinal plants, trees and shrubs.

Since 2008, the Central Theater Square of Essentuki has been decorated with the largest modern light-dynamic fountain without a bowl in the south of Russia, which over the course of several years has become the calling card of Essentuki. Its area is more than 400 square meters. Every minute it throws about 10 tons of water into the sky, playing after sunset with all the colors of the rainbow thanks to LED lighting.

The city's sanatorium and resort complex was replenished with two new facilities: the Rus sanatorium was put into operation in 2013, and the Istochnik sanatorium was launched in 2021. The medical facilities of the new sanatoriums are equipped with the latest equipment, which make it possible to provide a full range of spa treatments.

The railway cutting Essentuki into two parts complicates the movement of automobile transport, which is forced to constantly stand in huge traffic jams at crossings or use a bypass road. The solution to this pressing problem was the introduction in 2009 of an underground tunnel-type overpass in the area of Buachidze-Volodarsky streets, which is a two-lane road 8.5 meters wide with two-sided sidewalks for pedestrians, as well as the opening of an underground overpass in 2014 in the area of Ordzhonikidze streets, Drop, Vysoka and Shevchenko.

In 2013, the resort city of Essentuki, based on the results of work in 2012, was recognized as the winner in the All-Russian competition for the title “The most comfortable city in Russia” and was awarded a third degree diploma.

On August 21, 2021, citizens and guests of the city were greeted by the updated Victory Park with park floor lamps, LEDs along the alleys, facade architectural lighting, and landscaped alleys. The main decoration of the park was the entrance group made of Mozdok stone.

On May 17, 2021, a training ground for FIFA World Cup players was opened in the city of Essentuki. The arena is named after the pilot of the Great Patriotic War, Hero of the Soviet Union Valentin Kozlov. This is a playing field 105 meters long, stands for 500 spectators, two locker rooms and a press center capable of accommodating at least 100 journalists. After the World Cup, the Essentuki Arena stadium was transferred to the local children's and youth sports school for training the city's children and youth.

In 2021, new buildings of the infectious diseases hospital welcomed patients

In 2021, the city of Essentuki received a new landscaped walking area - Kurortny Boulevard. The square near the Moscow sanatorium has become a new point of attraction, a symbol of revival and positive changes, and Kurortny Boulevard itself from Andzhievskogo to Batalinskaya streets has become a historical walking area

In 2021, as part of the resort fee, the resort infrastructure facility was improved: “Parquet group at the Medical Park” at the entrance to the park from the mud baths on the street. Semashko.

In 2019-2020, as part of the resort fee, the upper part of the “Healing Park” was landscaped. The sculptures near the Nikolaev Baths were restored, the flower beds and alleys were put in order.

In 2021 and 2021, within the framework of the national project “Demography”, two new municipal budgetary preschool educational institutions were built in the city of Essentuki: MBDOU TsRR kindergarten No. 5 “Umka” (2019) and MBDOU TsRR – kindergarten No. 9 “Rodnichok” (2020) . These are not ordinary preschool education institutions, but modern child development centers. There are sports and assembly halls, swimming pools, medical units, speech therapy rooms and child psychologist rooms, cozy bedrooms, playrooms, and modern catering units.

In 2021, as part of the implementation of the “Formation of a modern urban environment” program, the public garden on the street was improved. Pervomaiskaya. Vacationers were greeted by updated alleys, children's and sports grounds, new benches and street lighting with LED lamps.

In 2021, the improvement of the territory of the Priozerny square, which became the people's choice as part of the “Formation of a modern urban environment” program, was completed. Residents and guests of the city were greeted by a renovated square with alleys and platforms made of colored paving stones, a variety of small architectural forms (sculptures, pergolas, gazebos, swings, clocks with a 4-sided dial), a dry river made of cobblestones with transitional forged bridges; — On the territory of the city of Essentuki in 2021, a new event site for the entire Stavropol region and the Caucasian Mineral Waters of 120 hectares appeared. Its location allows for mass events of about one hundred thousand people, including the most spectacular “International Fireworks Festival”

As part of the implementation of the project “Development of winter sports (figure skating, hockey, curling) in the Stavropol Territory” in Essentuki in 2021, the Ice Arena of the sports school under the leadership of Ilya Averbukh “Heritage” was built and the adjacent territory was landscaped.

Church of Panteleimon the Healer

Address: Essentuki, st. Andzhievsky, 2.

The Cathedral of Panteleimon the Healer in the Resort Park was built in 1896. Many famous artists who vacationed in Essentuki came here: Maxim Gorky, Fyodor Chaliapin, Sergei Rachmaninov, Alexander Kuprin, Konstantin Stanislavsky and others. In 1935, the temple was blown up. In the 1990s, donations began to be collected for the restoration of the temple. The Church of St. Pateleimon was rebuilt and consecrated in 2021.

Victory Park (English Park)

Another park in Essentuki is named after Victory. It covers an area of about 40 hectares. What distinguishes it from other parks in the city is that its creators used the canons of the English park style, which is why it was originally called English. Another feature is the abundance of plants not found in the Caucasus. Dendrologists brought seedlings from other regions and grew them in local conditions.

The park received its modern name in honor of the “Eternal Flame” stele installed on its territory, which is dedicated to the soldiers and commanders of the Red Army who died during the Civil and Great Patriotic Wars.

Essentuki in winter

Winter in Essentuki is windy and wet, the snow does not stay for long

Winter in Essentuki is unpredictable. Some years it is abnormally warm, when spring flowers bloom and fruit trees bloom in December. And sometimes it is not inferior in its severity to Central Russia - from -10..-20°C, which, of course, happens extremely rarely. If we talk about average indicators, then January, the coldest month of the year, is characterized by 0..-7°C. The weather is mostly cloudy. There are no heavy snowfalls, and the snow cover strives to melt every time the sun appears in the sky. 3 weeks is about how long it can last. In January-February, sharp thaws caused by the penetration of warm currents of Mediterranean air through the Caucasus ridge cannot be ruled out. On other days, eastern winds dominate the entire territory of the Stavropol Territory, often strong, so even at zero temperatures the cold is very noticeable.

Climate

The city of Essentuki is located at an altitude of about six hundred and forty meters above sea level, along the mountain river Podkumok.

The climate at the resort is continental, mountain-steppe, with moderate winds. The average temperature at the height of summer (July) is about twenty-seven degrees, sometimes reaching thirty-seven. Autumn is foggy, quite long and warm, but the nights are cool. Winter is mostly mild, not cold, although it sometimes happens that the cold exceeds thirty degrees. The average temperature in January is about five degrees. Spring is very short; from April the temperature begins to increase sharply.

The location and climate of the Essentuki resort contribute to fruitful recreation and treatment at any time of the year. However, it is still better to come here for “serious” treatment not in the summer. I wrote about this in detail in the article “Features of sanatorium-resort treatment, the whole truth and misconceptions.” Read, there is a lot of information on how rest and treatment takes place in such institutions.

Theater Park

The Essentuki Theater Park looks very attractive. In appearance, it looks like a typical park pavilion of the late 19th century: a classically shaped building with high panoramic windows and light-colored facade decoration. Previously, all kinds of visiting performers actively performed on its stage. Now the profile of the structure has changed somewhat. The theater-park building houses a hotel and a restaurant with a banquet hall.

Wellness season

The best time to undergo health procedures is the second half of spring, early summer and autumn

Nature has generously rewarded Essentuki with a comfortable climate, clean mountain air, highly therapeutically valuable silt sulfide mud from Lake Tambukan and magical springs of healing waters with a miraculous composition that have earned this resort well-deserved world fame. Its sanatoriums and boarding houses specialize in the treatment of many diseases in adult patients (children are practically not accepted here). Here are just a few of them: diseases of the digestive system, endocrine system, diabetes mellitus, metabolic disorders, nervous system disorders, diseases of the male and female reproductive system. Doctors say that there are no fundamental differences in the time of year for the treatment of the ailments listed above. All important resort factors remain here in winter. Therefore, you can come to Essentuki in the low season and still save a lot of money. But if you can’t imagine your vacation without long walks in the fresh air, then it is better to plan your trip from May to October, when the daylight hours are long enough and the sky is mostly clear above your head.
