If you got acquainted with the atmosphere of Evpatoria on the ancient streets, go outside the city. In the vicinity of the resort you will find salt lakes, vast steppes, intoxicating with the smell of herbs, wonderful white beaches and the continuation of the story of Ancient Greece. Some of them - the pink lake Sasyk-Sivash, the picturesque shores of Tarkhankut and the Belyaus spit "Crimean Maldives" - can rightfully be classified as the most important attractions of Crimea.

Many interesting places in the Evpatoria region are scattered at greater distances from each other than in other parts of Crimea, often outside villages, and transport links are limited. Nevertheless, everything that can be seen near Evpatoria can be visited on your own, by car or bus. Tourists without a car will always find it convenient to organize excursions.

This advice provides options for where it is possible and where it is more convenient to go from Yevpatoria, since the path passes through it, and Sevastopol, Bakhchisarai and Balaklava are omitted, although they are quite probable. Other pages will help you get acquainted with their capabilities:

What to see on your own

Near Evpatoria there are many interesting places that you can get to on your own - by public transport or by car. Among them are the attractions of neighboring resorts, lakes, beaches and even oyster farms.

Lake Sasyk-Sivash

Sasyk-Sivash is a large salt lake on the eastern outskirts of Evpatoria towards the Saki resort. It gained its popularity due to the pink color of the water, which makes any photo with it incredibly fantastic. However, the shade depends on the time of year: the peak of pink is July and August, but opinions vary greatly about the appropriate time of day. The salt and mud of the lake, located under the salt crust, are extremely useful, and from the side of the Evpatoria-Saki highway you can see pools for evaporation of the valuable product.

Convenient access to the lake is located on the southern and eastern sides. Those who use public transport need to get to the Pribrezhnoye bus stop or Tekhnikum train station, and then walk north about 2 km. Along the way, at the stop you can visit the ancient settlement “Kara-Tobe”.

Greco-Scythian settlement "Kara-Tobe"

The ancient settlement "Kara-Tobe" is located at the Evpatoria highway at the entrance to Saki. This is a Greek settlement dating back to the 4th century. BC e. The location on the hill, the remains of weapons and burials found indicate its defensive nature. During the Second World War there was a bunker on the hill.

The museum complex includes excavations of an ancient fortress, which are still underway, a reconstructed dwelling, and a small museum of finds in the pillbox tower. Guides working at the site will give a detailed account of the history and artifacts. From Yevpatoria you can take a bus to the Pribrezhnoye stop or the Tekhnikum railway station, walking further 200–500 meters.

Saki Lake

The lake in the vicinity of the city of Saki is one of the most famous bodies of water in Crimea. Vast deposits of sulfide silt mud, used for medicinal purposes since the beginning of the 19th century, led to the opening of dozens of sanatoriums here. Independent vacationers visit the lake shore bordering the sea (in the area of the Sunny Beach boarding house). Before using mud, a doctor's recommendations are required; there are many contraindications. In addition, there are certain application technologies that are observed only in sanatoriums, and therefore the effect of their treatment is higher.

From the side of the city of Saki, a long embankment runs along Lake Saki. It will take its final form in the summer of 2021. The wide, tiled promenade will be equipped with recreation areas and playgrounds. Not far from it is the Resort Park and the city's local history museum.

Museum of Local Lore and History of Mud Therapy

Moinak Lake

On the map of the western part of Yevpatoria it is easy to notice a large lake - Moinakskoe or Moinaki. The reservoir also contains brine in the bottom sediments of mud, formed due to the separation of the estuary by a sand spit. Their healing properties have been studied since the beginning of the 19th century and later entered the arsenal of local sanatoriums, becoming the main natural factor in the development of the resort.

To visit the lake, the eastern shore is convenient, having gentle sandy slopes and leading directly to the streets of the Sanatorium microdistrict of Evpatoria. You may not even have to travel. When planning to use brine and mud, you need to remember caution and the rules for their use.

Settlement "Chaika"

On the southern shore of Lake Big Yaly-Moynak there are excavations of an ancient settlement founded by the Greeks in the 4th century BC. e. It is conventionally called the “Chaika” settlement and is believed to have had a defensive and economic function for Chersonesos. Later, the Scythians settled in its place. Among the finds are many ceramics and images of Greek gods.

The remains of "Chaika" are not as impressive, unlike Chersonesos. These are mainly the foundations of buildings from different periods, which still retain the outlines and part of the masonry. People rarely go to it specifically; usually guests of Zaozernoye come here while walking along the coast. There is no excursion service on site.

Oybur Lake

Not far from Yevpatoria, between the villages of Shtormovoye and Popovka, lies Lake Oyburskoye. The reservoir is one of the largest in Crimea and in its usefulness can compete with Lake Saki. People come to him to lie in salt water, as in the Dead Sea, and also to take advantage of blue clay and silt mud, the healing properties of which have been known since the time of Herodotus.

The most attractive part for all tourists is the sand spit between the lake and the sea, which has an average width of 100 meters, since it is convenient to swim in the reservoirs one by one. In addition to Lake Oyburskoye, in Shtormovoe you can visit the village beach and the “Sea Curiosities” museum, which collects things thrown out by the sea, and halfway towards Novoozernoye you can be impressed by the orderly rows of wind turbines at the Mironovskaya Wind Farm.

Cape Tarkhankut

Cape Tarkhankut is the outstanding western point of the Crimean peninsula. It is definitely on the must visit list if you find yourself in the West. Vacationers come to just admire it and have an active time, snorkeling or scuba diving.

In the southern part of the cape there is a protected area Maly and Bolshoy Atlesh . Dzhangul tract

Dzhangul landslide coast is a natural reserve on the coast north of Olenevka. Mountainous shores, high layered slopes, intricate rock formations in the sea, caves in the rocks and small bays amaze the imagination of any guest. Valuable representatives of the flora grow in the ravines extending into the sea.

The territory is a nature reserve; you must follow the rules for visiting such places, for example, you cannot light fires. It is safer to move along the existing paths and you can even drive a passenger all-wheel drive car if you choose the road carefully. Bolshoy Kastel tract

The landscape of the Bolshoy Kastel ravine is under protection, the reason for which lies in the diversity of flora and fauna. Relict shrubs, red-listed herbs grow here, several species of wasps, and colonies of wild rabbits and cormorants live here.

Dzhangulskaya Bay, where the gully opens, has long been loved by tourists. However, now visiting is limited: certain places are allocated for tents and cars. An advantage of the accommodation is the presence of a well with water, and swimming and diving will complement the study of the ruins of an ancient Greek house on the left side of the coast.

Black Sea

75 km from Yevpatoria there is a large resort village and the center of Western Crimea - Chernomorskoye. Several of its attractions are worth a visit if you make it this far.

The Kalos Limen Museum-Reserve includes exhibitions about the nature of the Black Sea region, the history of the peoples of the late 19th - 20th centuries. and sanctifies the events of new times. A special place is occupied by the history of the Greco-Scythian settlement "Kalos Limen" , which was a major port, center of trade and craft on the west coast. Its name translated from Greek means “Beautiful Harbor”. The ruins of the settlement itself - the remains of barracks, towers, city houses - are located in the northern part of the Central Black Sea Beach, they are easy to find.

Not far from the museum stands the Church of Zechariah and Elizabeth - a tall rectangular building with a spire. It resembles a tower in the constructivist style, but this is how the church was conceived by Count M. S. Vorontsov. Features of pseudo-Gothic and Romanesque style are also inherent in the Vorontsov Palace in Alupka.

Swan Lake

The closest part of Lake Sasyk-Sivash, located between the road to Saki and Simferopolskaya Street, is named Swan, and it is not marked on the maps. The place became a tourist spot with the appearance of a colony of mute swans on the reservoir. There are always enough people willing to feed and photograph the graceful snow-white birds. The most convenient places to meet them are located on the side of the road along the northern shore of the lake, where it is easier to get there by car. The southern shore, despite the buildings and the street, is almost entirely overgrown with reeds.

Radio telescope P-2500

On the outskirts of the village of Molochny, west of Yevpatoria, there is a unique object created by man. The P-2500 (RT-70) radio telescope is impressive with its height and huge dish with a diameter of 70 m. There are only a few telescopes of this size with a fully movable dish in the world, and only two with a powerful transmitter.

The P-2500 radio telescope near Yevpatoria was honored to be featured on one of the 2015 Bank of Russia banknotes dedicated to Crimea. The presence of a white plate on a leg also adds an unusual, cosmic note to the real seascape of Molochnoe, especially when viewed from the pink Lake Galgasskoe.
