Monuments, museums, sights of Pereslavl-Zalessky
Despite the fact that the city is small, it will not be possible to see all the sights of Pereslavl-Zalessky in one day: its history preserves too much.
The defensive power of Pereyaslavl was strengthened by the numerous monasteries that surrounded the city. They stopped the enemy at the approaches and enabled residents to better prepare for battle. In total, 6 monastic complexes have been preserved, 4 of them are active monasteries.
Goritsky Assumption Monastery
On the map of attractions of the city of Pereslavl-Zalessky, this monastery is designated as a museum. Its powerful walls were built as military defensive fortifications. Unfortunately, only buildings from the 17th-18th centuries have reached us. But the main pride of the monastery is its glorious history.
In 1382, Khan Tokhtamysh approached its walls, behind which Princess Evdokia, the wife of Dmitry Donskoy and her newborn child, had taken refuge. To save her, the novices built rafts and sailed to the middle of Lake Pleshcheevo, while the rest invited the Tatars to negotiations, but this was done only to delay time. Having seen through the ruse, the enraged invaders destroyed the monastery, and then the city. By the time they reached the lake, by the grace of God, a thick fog had fallen and covered the fugitive.
The passageways and especially the Holy Gate of the monastery amaze with their lush decor made of molded bricks. And who would have thought that a brick structure could look like openwork embroidery! The interior of the Assumption Cathedral inside the walls of the monastery is distinguished by the richness of paintings and stucco decorations made by the sculptors of the New Jerusalem Monastery.
Nowadays, the abolished monastery houses part of the collection of the Pereslavl Museum-Reserve.
Nikitsky Monastery
And this monastery has its own history. The monastery was founded by the son of Vladimir the Red Sun, Boris, in order to convey Christian values to the pagans. How he conveyed them, the chronicle is silent, but it is known about one of his novice - Saint Nikita the Stylite. Once a tax collector, and not particularly clean of hands, fearing either the wrath of God or the prince’s disfavor, he decided to cleanse himself of his sins. Yes, he became so clean that he began to heal people and cast out demons. At the same time, he wore iron chains (chains) and a stone cap for the rest of his life. Yes, it’s better not to sin like that!
Stone construction affected the monastery only in the 16th century, mainly under Ivan IV. “Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich the Terrible established a hostel, built a stone refectory with a warm church and a cellar and a stone bell tower. And over the tomb of the wonderworker Nikita, he built a church... with two aisles... and built a stone fence around the house of the wonderworker Nikita... and decorated the churches with God’s mercy.”
In addition to the attractions of Pereslavl-Zalessky listed in the photo, there are four more monasteries:
- Nikolsky Monastery
- Holy Trinity Danilov Monastery
- Feodorovsky Monastery
- Sretensky Novodevichy Convent (closed in 1764)
- Transfiguration Cathedral
Simultaneously with the fortress, Dolgoruky began construction of the Transfiguration Cathedral. Nowadays this landmark of the city of Pereslavl-Zalessky is the oldest building in the city. The temple is built of white limestone, its appearance is austere; the architecture dates back to the traditions of Byzantium. The walls of the cathedral remember the most famous native of Pereslavl - Prince Alexander Nevsky. In ancient times, next to the temple stood the chambers of the Pereyaslavl princes, probably here, at the princely court, the future famous warrior was born. It is assumed that there was also a passage from the chambers to the choir of the cathedral, as evidenced by a blocked door niche in the upper part of the northern wall. The cathedral is a princely tomb, where the son and grandson of Alexander Nevsky found eternal peace, to whom a monument was erected next to the temple.
Museum "Birth of a Fairy Tale"
Our first stop was the Birth of a Fairy Tale Museum. Museum address: Yaroslavl region, Pereslavl district, Vasilevo village (25 km before Pereslavl). The territory of the complex is made in the traditions of Russian architecture. There is a royal house (there are interactive programs nearby), a hut on chicken legs, a crane well, a water mill, and various funny figures. You can run, climb and take pictures.
And, most importantly, there is a museum where excursions are held telling about every fairy-tale character familiar to us from childhood. So the kids will be delighted to see Kolobok and the Geese-Swans, Grandma the Hedgehog and Masha with the Bear, and older children (and adults too) will find it useful to know what really happened with Koshcheyev’s death (and not only! ). And when leaving the museum, you must not forget to make your cherished wishes while walking along the magic bridge!
Near the museum grounds there is a cafe where you can satisfy your hunger by running around in the fresh air. The prices are reasonable, the food is edible, but if there are a lot of people, you may have to wait.
Also now a separate museum of “Slavic mythology” has opened there. I think it’s worth going there on an excursion, otherwise it doesn’t turn out well: we know Egyptian, Greek, Roman mythology, but we don’t even know about our own!
What to show children
In Pereslavl-Zalessky there are several park areas, cultural and entertainment centers, and interactive museums for children, where young visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of ancient Russian fairy tales and get acquainted with Old Slavonic traditions and way of life. The city welcomes travelers with children at any time. Museums are open all year round, with entertainment events, holidays and festivals taking place every month. The city has many private museums, dozens of exciting excursions, master classes and interactive shows. There are unusual and even funny exhibitions where they will tell you about serious things in a fun and educational way. If you are going to Pereslavl with children, you can check the dates of various events on the poster of the Museum-Reserve. And on any given day you will find a dozen places that you can see in Pereslavl-Zalessky in just one day with children. Here are just a few options for you to choose from where you can spend time with your kids cheerfully and cheerfully.
Museum "Birth of a Fairy Tale"
The Museum “The Birth of Fairy Tales and Slavic Mythology” is a whole tourist complex with a huge territory. The museum's exhibitions present a unique collection of Slavic mythology, heroes of Russian fairy tales and epics. Baba Yaga, Alyonushka, Koschey, Kolobok. Each diorama immerses the viewer in a specific story, and light, sound, and music create the effect of complete immersion. There is an exposition with exhibits of Slavic gods, a royal house, a hut on chicken legs, a cascading pond with a water mill. To thoroughly study all the exhibitions, you can walk in the museum for more than one day. The museum organizes group and individual programs for all major holidays:
- New Year,
- Christmas,
- Maslenitsa,
- Ivan Kupala…
Berendeevo kingdom
A tall wooden tower, straight out of the pages of a children's fairy tale, with bright carved frames and a picturesque porch, stands near the central road and delights travelers with its elegant appearance. Guests are invited to take part in master classes on ancient crafts and try their hand at creating an original souvenir in Slavic traditions. During the excursion, guests will be told the story of Tsar Berendey, children will be able to sit on his throne and even try on the royal costume. The museum is open all year round, and on all major holidays the Berendey House hosts themed events, concerts and festivals, where heroes of Russian folk tales stage fun interactive performances for guests.
Iron Museum
You definitely won't miss this bright two-story house with lots of funny inscriptions on the fence. There is a souvenir shop on the ground floor, and the museum itself on the second. The exhibition features a huge collection of antique irons from different times, from different countries of the world, operating on different types of fuel. There are working copies. All exhibits can be touched and photographed. The excursion will be interesting for both adults and children. The information is presented in an interesting, informative and playful manner.
Teapot Museum
Hotels in Pereslavl-Zalessky
Then we went to check into hotels. Hotel "Botik" is located on the very shore of Lake Pleshcheevo. The view is very picturesque, but I can’t say anything about the quality - our friends are staying there.
We checked into the Veslevo Park Hotel, located just outside the city. A huge territory, there is a place to let out children who are tired after a long journey and let them run around to their heart's content. There are horses, and donkeys, and other living creatures (which will be discussed later) - and what else do children need to be happy. Consider it a petting zoo and lots of fun!
Our room was nice, in a country style, all decorated with clapboards, and smelled pleasantly of wood. The downside is that the water in the shower has a strange smell. We didn’t dare to rinse ourselves! But time does not wait, we still have so many plans. And the main thing is, of course, Peter’s Botik!
Important milestones in the history of Pereslavl-Zalessky
When did it appear on the map?
The chronicle of Pereslavl-Zalessky begins in 1152, from its foundation by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, known in history as the founder of various cities: Moscow, Kostroma, Yuryev-Polsky, Dmitrov, Dubna - cities that arose under the outstretched hand of the princely “urban planner”. We started, as usual, with the Kremlin. This building has not survived to this day: destroyed, burned and restored again, in 1759 it was simply dismantled as unnecessary; but then it could compete in size and defensive characteristics with the Vladimir and Moscow Kremlin.
The original name “Pereyaslavl” meant “who took over the glory,” and it became Pereyaslavl-Zalessky already in the 15th century, indicating that it is located behind the forests separating Eastern Rus' from the Kyiv and Chernigov estates.
Built as a stronghold that defended the Rostov-Suzdal principality, it soon became the center of an independent appanage principality. Located at the intersection of important trade routes between the Volga and Veliky Novgorod, the city quickly gained strength.
Invasion
In the 13th century, ancient cities fell one after another under the onslaught of the wild hordes of the Golden Horde. The Mongol-Tatars received real resistance only at the walls of Pereyaslavl. Only the use of battering machines and incendiary mixtures helped them break into the city after a week-long siege. The city was ravaged by invaders six times; His problems were added to by the internecine wars of the princes, who each acted in their own interests and turned to the Mongols for help for this.
Numerous lootings did not break the spirit of the people who inhabited the city. In 1374, a meeting of Russian princes and boyars took place in Pereyaslavl, at which the issue of liberation from the yoke was discussed for the first time.
Amusing flotilla
The history of the city is connected with the name of the Russian autocrat Peter I. His contribution to the founding of the Russian fleet is difficult to overestimate. Through the labors of the royal helmsman, Russia became a great maritime power for centuries. And Peter I acquired experience in shipbuilding and his first skills as a naval commander here, in Pereslavl-Zalessky, on the shores of Lake Pleshcheevo. Having discovered an English boat in one of the barns, greedy for everything new, the active youth switched his interests to “Neptune’s fun”, and in the summer of 1788, begging from his mother under the pretext of visiting the monastery, he came to Lake Pleshcheyevo.
Peter was pleased with the chosen place; As a result, a shipyard was built at the mouth of the Trubezh River, which flows into the lake, and in 1691, under the leadership of Dutch mentors, they began to build ships. The young king, with an ax in his hands, along with the others, learned the basics of shipbuilding. And already in May 1692, the first frigate was launched (in total, more than 100 of them were built); salvos of cannons and the ringing of bells in Pereyaslavl churches announced the birth of the Russian fleet.
The fate of the most amusing flotilla is unenviable. Those ships that time had spared were destroyed by the fire of 1788. Only the bot with the self-explanatory name “Fortune” survived, which is now kept in the museum. For tourists, especially for children, this attraction of Pereslavl-Zalessky is a kind of good luck talisman that everyone wants to touch.
Pre-revolutionary time
Until the mid-19th century, Pereslavl-Zalesky was the first in industry and trade among the district cities of Central Russia. But when the Northern Railway opened in 1868, the city found itself 25 km from the laid rails, and then its economy quickly declined.
Museum "Boat of Peter I"
Lake Pleshcheyevo has long been the property of Moscow sovereigns. Young Peter saw it for the first time in 1688. And in 1692, Peter I founded a shipyard on the mountain near the village of Veskovo, where the boats of the amusing flotilla were built for sailing on Lake Pleshcheyevo. One of the ships survived the subsequent fires and is presented in the Boat of Peter I museum along with authentic items from the end of the 17th century. These are the tools used by Peter the Great's shipbuilders; parts of ships, their weapons and equipment.
At the museum we came across extremely unfriendly caretakers. And it was not possible to book an individual excursion - all the guides were busy. So if you want to go on a tour, you need to book in advance!

Teapot Museum
We walked to the Teapot Museum from Botik along the side of the road. In principle, close, but not comfortable. Especially considering the twilight and the lack of a pedestrian zone.
The museum left me with the most positive emotions. In the evening it’s somehow especially nice and cozy there. Get in a non-serious mood and welcome! In the museum we saw:
A large teapot (with its head forgotten) And a small teapot (for hamsters), Eastern kumgan (not at all for drinks) And a bouillette teapot with alcohol instead of firewood. And samovars, and cockroaches, Primus stoves, a mortar, tongs and a grip, In general, if you come, you will see for yourself, And whoever didn’t go is to blame!
Narrow Gauge Railway Museum
The next day, the children happily ran around all morning and communicated with the animals; before leaving, we gave them a ride on horses. It seems that this is the best option for a family with children, when the hotel has a fenced area and there is somewhere to roam, rather than sit in the room. So we made no mistake here.
The first trip planned for this day was to the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum. We gave up the room. We are driving and worrying about the weather, because when there is precipitation, the main attraction - riding a trolley - does not work. And he is precisely what we need most.
We got there quickly. The road is so-so. We had to wait a long time, but the children again ran, jumped, climbed where they should and where they shouldn’t, looked at the exhibits and listened to the story of real enthusiasts of their work: the employees of this museum, by whose strength it all lives and breathes. And then there was the handcar. And it was cool!
Nikitsky Monastery and Blue Stone
And then we went to the outskirts of Pereslavl-Zalessky, where in the village of Nikitskaya Sloboda there is one of the oldest Russian monasteries. This is the Nikitsky Monastery, founded, according to historians, earlier than 1186.
The monastery is of extraordinary beauty, restored and very majestic. It is active, so you must follow all the rules, including wearing appropriate clothing. And after visiting the monastery, we bought local smoked vendace - royal herring - near its walls. How delicious it is!
Then the pitch black night came, And it seemed like we had to leave, But we decided to see the legendary Blue-Stone after all! Now it will hardly be forgotten how we looked for him at night! We wandered through the stormy night, lighting the road with our iPhone. But, fortunately, we were not lost, and our meeting took place!
The beauty of Pereslavl-Zalessky
Everything here is the same as one hundred, two hundred, and three hundred years ago. The same healing silence of the monasteries, the swell of Lake Pleshcheyevo, the cries of seagulls over the water.
The Trubezh River is the largest of the rivers that feed Lake Pleshcheyevo. At the mouth of the river there is a “lighthouse” - this is the name of the Sorokosvyatsky Church: thanks to its white and red decoration, it serves as a landmark for fishermen who have sailed far away.
Lake Pleshcheyevo is a pearl of the forest, one of the most beautiful in central Russia; many local legends and beliefs are associated with it. It remains beautiful in any of its guise: covered in thick morning fog, agitated before a thunderstorm, or mirror-smooth in the calm. In winter, ice fishing enthusiasts flock to this landmark of Pereslavl-Zalessky with their fishing rods: perch, pike, roach - this is not a complete list of fish that live here. Of particular note is vendace. This fish used to be supplied to the royal table (this is how the fish ended up on the city’s coat of arms); the rest were forbidden to catch it, however, the ban still exists, since vendace is listed in the Red Book.
A cult object for local residents is an unusual stone, a huge blue boulder on the north-eastern shore of the lake. Thanks to its picturesque color scheme, from time immemorial all sorts of magical properties have been attributed to it, which somewhat irritated the clergy, so they periodically tried to get rid of it, but always in vain. This current landmark of Pereslavl-Zalessky in modern photographs looks the same as it did in the winter of 1788, when, according to historians’ descriptions, they tried to transport it on a sleigh across the ice of the lake in order to lay it in the foundation of the Spiritual Church near the Trubezh River. But the ice cracked, and the stone went under the water, and after 70 years miraculously reappeared on the shore. So he lies to this day, and people come to him with prayers for the secret.
Urban architecture has not undergone significant changes in the historical part of Pereslavl. The preserved stone and wooden buildings along the streets make it possible to see the former appearance of the city, and the imagination completes the customs and way of life of the townspeople of bygone eras.
What we didn’t have time to see in Pereslavl-Zalessky
This time we did not have time to get to the Goritsky and Feodorovsky monasteries, the Iron Museum, we should take a good look at Red Square with the ancient Spassky Cathedral and the monument to the great fellow countryman - Alexander Nevsky. There are also many small interesting museums in the city: antique sewing machines, ingenuity, history of money, etc. If you are more time-conscious than us, feel free to include these places in your guide. Just don’t be in too much of a hurry: Pereslavl deserves more than half a day on the way to more famous cities!
Pereslavl-Zalessky in names
Alexander Nevskiy
The most revered fellow countryman in Pereslavl-Zalessky is Prince Alexander Nevsky, who was born here in 1221. I was especially proud that in 2008 it was chosen “in the name of Russia.” During his reign, he fought endlessly, defending “national sovereignty”: he smashed the Livonians and Teutons, Lithuanians and Swedes. Loud victories were
Battle of Neva - 1240; Inspired by the prince's speech, the squad, together with the Novgorodians, without waiting for the main support, won a victory over the Swedes who were marching on Pskov and Novgorod.
Battle on the Ice - 1242; On the ice of Lake Peipus, the knights of the Livonian Order, thanks to skillful tactics, were surrounded and defeated.
Only his policy towards the Golden Horde remains controversial. Some historians believe that the prince unnecessarily curried favor with the khans, lost face, often visiting Karakorum, the then capital of the Mongol Empire; others believe that by such behavior he saved the country from raids.
On the map of Pereslavl-Zalessky attractions, one of the significant places is the Transfiguration Cathedral, where Alexander’s father, Prince Yaroslav, initiated his sons into warriors in 1225.
Mikhail Mikhailovich Prishvin
The writer came to Pereslavl in 1925 at the invitation of the director of the local history museum to work with children at the children's biological station. Together with his family, he settled on the “Botik”, where he had at his disposal the apartments of the Petrovsky Palace, along with luxurious museum furniture. It was a happy time for Prishvin. After a difficult period in his life, his stay in Pereslavl and the beauty of its surroundings remained in the heart of the singer of the Russian forest for the rest of his life. Here he wrote the book “Calendar of Nature”. Later, he came here several times, hunted, took notes, and helped save the destroyed forest, which is now known in the Yaroslavl region as the “Prishvinsky Forest.”
Fyodor Chaliapin, the famous Russian bass, and Yuri Gagarin, and children's writer Eduard Uspensky visited Pereslavl-Zalessky. Here, at different times, theater and film actor Marin Ivan Nikitovich and our contemporary, talented Russian actor Alexander Petrov were born and spent their childhood.
Traveling with children to Pereslavl-Zalessky
One of the most ancient cities of the “Golden Ring” of Russia is located on the shore of the large Pleshcheevo Lake. It is good at any time of the year, but in winter it has a special flavor. When traveling here with children, it is interesting to look at ancient monasteries, look into unusual teapot and iron museums, and also attend folklore festivals.
What to see with children
The small city has so many attractions that you could spend more than a day traveling around it. It is very interesting to take a tour of the ancient Goritsky Monastery, which is located 1.8 km from the bus station (Museiny lane, 4).
Sometimes this monastery is mistakenly called the Kremlin, because its territory is surrounded by stone walls and surrounded by powerful towers. The monastery stands on a hill and offers excellent views of the city and Lake Pleshcheyevo. The architectural complex of the monastery is very beautiful. It consists of the majestic Assumption Cathedral, as well as picturesque stone and wooden churches.
Nowadays, the monastery houses the collections of the museum-reserve - icons, carved sculptures, church antiquities, unique works of gold seamstresses and paintings. With small children, it is interesting to visit the museum section telling about local nature. In winter, the museums of the Goritsky Monastery are open daily, except Mondays, from 10.00 to 17.00.
Behind the monastery fence there is a small but very interesting museum dedicated to Alexander Nevsky. It exhibits a model of old Pereslavl, paintings and ancient chain mail. The museum doors are open for guests on all days except Mondays, from 10.00 to 17.00.
Pereslavl-Zalessky has only about 40 thousand inhabitants. And almost all travelers are surprised that in such a small city there are about two dozen museums, many of them created specifically for children. That is why Pereslavl-Zalessky is often called the “most fabulous” city in Central Russia.
On the shore of the lake, in the village of Veskovo, there is one of the most popular museums, where the wooden boat of Peter I is exhibited. It is open on all days except Monday, from 10.00 to 17.00. In the same village there is an unusual museum of teapots, where you can see everything that was used for tea drinking in Russia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Museum of the History of Money and the Museum of Gramophones and Records are also popular in Veskovo. During the winter months, all three museums are open on weekends and holidays from 10.00 to 18.00.
In the city itself, on the street. Uritsky, 38, there is a “Berendey House”. Interesting folklore programs and master classes of folk crafts are held in the high tower. Here children learn to make souvenirs and paint wooden crafts.
Opposite the city bus station, a historical and cultural museum has been created, which houses six museums. There is a Glade of Fairy-tale Heroes in the park, and with the help of craftsmen you can master the technique of dough modeling and making folk toys. The park is open to guests on all days except Monday and Tuesday, from 10.00 to 18.00.
On Sovetskaya Street, opposite each other, there is an iron museum (building 11) and a museum of cunning and ingenuity (building 14B). The first exhibits a rich collection of antique irons, and in the courtyard stands the fabulous Baba Yaga, with whom visitors love to take pictures. In the second museum you can see unusual devices used in everyday life a century and a half ago, as well as tools of artisans. It’s interesting that the museum shop sells antiques as souvenirs.
Lake Pleshcheyevo
In winter, a large round body of water resembles frozen waves of the sea. A particularly good view of it opens from the walls of the ancient Goritsky Monastery. The ice here is strong, so skiers ski on the lake, and ice fishing enthusiasts can be seen everywhere. Pereslavl souvenirs depict the famous vendace, a fish that lives in Lake Pleshcheyevo. Russian tsars loved to feast on it. And Alexander Dumas came to Pereslavl-Zalessky specifically for vendace.
In winter, fans of snowkiting come to Lake Pleshcheyevo. The city has a school for beginner kiters, and with older children you can try gliding in the wind across the snow-covered expanses of the lake.
Restaurants and cafes
In the city center there are many establishments aimed at tourists, and most of them are located along the Yaroslavl highway. At house 11 on Narodnaya Square there is a cultural and entertainment complex “Golden Ring”, where there are several cafes and restaurants where you can dine. In addition, the cafe-pizzeria “Pinocchio”, the dining room “Visit”, as well as the cafes “Blinnaya”, “Bamboo” and “Khutorok” are popular among tourists.
Where to stay
As the number of travelers on the Golden Ring routes grows year by year, more and more hotels and guest houses are being built in the city. Budget accommodation for two adults and one child starts from 600 rubles per night. Most options can be found at a price of 1100-1300 rubles. These are hotels, mini-hotels, guest houses and recreation centers, many of which offer guests free breakfast.
Pereslavl-Zalessky is a small city, so from any end of it it is not difficult to get to the main attractions. There are 10 shuttle buses running along the streets. During the daytime, the interval between minibuses is 8-10 minutes. It is convenient for motor tourists to stay in motels. There are several of them in the city.
How to get there
Samara and Pereslavl-Zalessky are separated by 1050 km. In winter, by car through Ulyanovsk, Nizhny Novgorod and Vladimir, this distance can be covered in 14-14.5 hours.
Pereslavl-Zalessky is 144 km away from Moscow. You can come from Samara to the capital by train or by plane, and there are several regular buses from Moscow to Pereslavl-Zalessky. They depart from the bus station near the Shchelkovskaya metro station. There are 8 direct flights every day. There are also many buses passing through Pereslavl-Zalessky and going to Kostroma, Yaroslavl, Rybinsk, Tutaev, Gavrilov Yama and Makaryev. Nikitsky Monastery
Nikitsky Monastery
The oldest Russian monastery, dating back to the 12th century. It can be seen at the exit from the city, in Nikitsky Sloboda. Under Ivan the Terrible, the monastery was surrounded by walls with towers and loopholes, and the stone Nikitinsky Cathedral was built on its territory.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the monastery was closed, its buildings were deteriorating, and by 1984 the Nikitsky Cathedral began to collapse. In 1993, the monastery reopened its doors, and today it is undergoing large-scale restoration.
The Nikitsky Cathedral of the 16th century, the Church of the Annunciation with a refectory chamber and a hipped bell tower of the 16th–17th centuries, and the gate bell tower of the 19th century deserve attention.

Alexandrova mountain
Alexandrova mountain
A 30-meter hill rises on the shore of Lake Pleshcheevo. According to legend, this is a man-made structure. Its creation is attributed to Alexander Nevsky himself. He founded a monastery on the mountain (it has not survived to this day). It is known that a sacred place (“temple”) of pagan tribes was located here.
Today, Alexandrova Mountain is a wonderful viewing platform, from where a wonderful panorama of Lake Pleshcheevo and its surroundings opens.

Blue stone
Blue stone
A couple of kilometers from the city, on the shore of Lake Pleshcheevo, you can see a real pagan shrine - the Sin-stone. Initially it was located on Aleksandrovskaya Mountain. In the Middle Ages, Orthodox Christians came to the stone with requests for healing. The Orthodox clergy fought against the worship of the pagan stone, but without much success.
Modern tourists visit the Blue Stone as a tourist attraction, but some still believe in “magical” healing. Some money is left at the stone, and colored ribbons are tied to the bridges near the lake.

History of the city's formation
The history of Pereslavl is filled with legends and traditions. According to chronicles, the city was founded by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1152. At this place, he ordered the construction of a fortress for defense against numerous enemies. The city is inextricably linked with the names of several Russian princes, Orthodox tsars, great warriors and holy elders.
This is one of the few places where many ancient examples of Russian architecture have survived to this day - white stone churches with golden domes and monasteries, each of which deserves special mention. A specially protected natural area - Lake Pleshcheyevo National Park - impresses with its beauty lovers of hiking in the picturesque area. There is a lot to do here: you can fish, swim, boat, windsurf. Everyone will find something interesting in the city for themselves: the magnificent Lake Pleshcheyevo and the mysterious Sin-Stone, picturesque nature, archaeological sites, temples and monasteries, museums, folk crafts with master classes and, of course, numerous entertainments for children.

Sights of Pereslavl-Zalessky with photos, descriptions and addresses
We always knew that there was something to see in Pereslavl, but only while writing this article did we realize how many such places there are. We have been here probably ten times already, but even we still have museums that are worth a look, especially since new ones open almost every year. Before we move on to the museums and monasteries of the city, I would like to say a few words about the main attraction of Pereslavl - Lake Pleshcheyevo National Park.
Lake Pleshcheyevo, Blue Stone and Alexandrova Mountain
It is impossible not to notice the large beautiful lake in Pereslavl; it attracts tourists; the city seems to stretch along its southern shore. It is believed that it was formed more than 30 thousand years ago as a result of glacier retreat and is almost the oldest lake in the European part of Russia. In the lake you can swim, fish, kite ride and just enjoy the wonderful views. For those for whom this is not enough, you can visit the Blue Stone and make a wish or climb Alexander Mountain. We wrote a separate article , which is particularly popular, so we will not repeat it.

Arboretum named after Kharitonov
The Kharitonov Arboretum is not the most popular attraction of Pereslavl-Zalessky; it is not a museum. But it would be wrong to remain silent about it, especially since the Pereslavl arboretum is already more than 50 years old. A quiet and peaceful place with few people, but a lot of mosquitoes. You can not only enjoy nature and rare plants, but also ride a bike. Detailed article about Kharitonov's garden in Pereslavl .

Museums of Pereslavl-Zalessky
There are many museums in Pereslavl, even a lot, and museums for every taste and color, from the original ones, dedicated to the iron and teapot, to quite classic local history ones.
Museum-Reserve Pereslavl-Zalessky
The State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum is one of the largest museums in the city. In addition to the central part, located in the former Goritsky monastery, it has a number of branches, each of which is a separate unique museum that deserves a separate article. The Goritsky Monastery was abolished in 1788 and was empty for a long time, but in the early 1900s the Pereslavl Local History Museum appeared here and it is located here today. The main exhibition of the museum is located on the territory of the monastery, and we talked about it in detail in one of our previous publications .

Botik Museum of Peter I
One of the branches of the museum-reserve is the Botik Museum of Peter the Great. It was built on the very spot where the first Russian emperor once built his amusing flotilla. One of the boats has survived to this day and is the central exhibit of the entire museum. We also have a separate article with photos and a detailed description of the museum.

Ganshin Estate
20 km from Pereslavl there is another branch of the Pereslavl Museum-Reserve - the Ganshin estate. The museum's exposition tells about the life of the simplest Russian village at the end of the 19th century, but this is not the most interesting thing. The fact is that in 1894, the merchant Alexei Ganshin received from the leader of the world proletariat V.I. Lenin’s manuscript of the book “What are “friends of the people” and how do they fight against the Social Democrats?”, it was in the merchant’s estate that the first two parts of the famous work were illegally printed. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the 20th century, the estate burned down, and with it 30 more houses in the village, and what few tourists can see now is a reconstruction, but a very good one.

Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral of the 12th century
The Transfiguration Cathedral is located in the very center of the city - on Red Square. This is a unique architectural monument and one of the oldest churches in Russia. It was founded during the time of Yuri Dolgorukov, i.e. in the 12th century. Unfortunately, the temple is currently undergoing restoration and it will be possible to enter it only in 2021; you can only admire it from the outside. have already told the detailed history of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Pereslavl Zalessky . By the way, there are several other interesting churches and ramparts nearby.
Address: Red Square Opening hours: under restoration
Teapot Museum
A small private museum with a unique collection of teapots, which includes more than two hundred pieces. There are copper, brass, and generally unknown alloys, as well as all kinds of jars, barrels, sugar bowls, stands and other devices for storing, brewing and consuming tea, both internally and for compresses. You should definitely take a tour to the Teapot Museum - the amazing interactive program will appeal to both children and adults, and the unusual design of the museum will lift your spirits.

Iron Museum
The Iron Museum is the older brother of the Teapot Museum; they even have something similar in appearance. Such a joyful building and a huge collection dedicated solely to irons. The museum's collection includes more than 130 irons from all over the world. If you come to the museum on the “right day”, when Iron Day is celebrated, you can experience irons in action. In general, a fun time is guaranteed for all visitors.

Steam Locomotive Museum
Since we are talking about thematic museums of Pereslavl-Zalessky, it is impossible not to mention the steam locomotive museum. To be fair, it is worth saying that it is located outside the city and getting to it by public transport is not very easy, but the museum is worth it. Shown here are also steam locomotives designed for narrow-gauge railways.
The most amazing thing is that half of the exhibits are still on the move and, with a strong desire and money, any visitor can ride them. A bonus to the steam locomotives is a small exhibition of cars. This, of course, is not the Vadim Zadorozhny museum , but there is something to see. We have more detailed information about the museum and instructions on how to get to it in a separate article dedicated to the steam locomotive museum in Pereslavl-Zalessky.

Museum of Russian Vases
Continuing our study of the thematic museums of Pereslavl-Zalessky, let's take a look at the Museum of Russian Vases. Here you can see a large collection of vases, decanters, jugs and other vessels in which you can place flowers. Here I really want to write that the vases presented in the museum are from all over the world, but this is not so. The museum is dedicated specifically to the Russian vase, which means all the exhibits here are of domestic production. Most of them date back to the time of Tsarist Russia, and some even date back to the 17th century.

Radio Museum
The Radio Museum in Pereslavl-Zalessky is one of the youngest in the city, and we had the opportunity to visit it just a few days after its opening and meet its owner. The museum contains a unique collection of tube radios from all over the world, both foreign and domestic. There are also the first televisions, cameras and video cameras, and a large collection of vinyl records. You should definitely go to the museum with a tour, then you will learn many interesting facts from the life of individual exhibits, and of course the full history of radios. We wrote in detail about this museum in a separate article .
Address: st. Podgornaya, 40 Opening hours: 10.00-18.00, except Monday
Ticket price: 150 rubles
Alexander Nevsky Museum
If you are tired of thematic museums, then you can look into a historical one for a change. Directly opposite the Goritsky Monastery there is a small museum dedicated to Alexander Nevsky, who was born and raised in these places. Alexander Nevsky is perhaps the most famous resident of Pereslavl-Zalessky, so it is not surprising that he was given a separate museum, which displays icons with his image, his orders and medals, and also tells in detail the life story of the Grand Duke.
Address: Museum lane. 9 Opening hours: 10:00-17:00, except Monday
Ticket price: 100 rubles
Fairytale Museum
And again let's return to thematic museums. This time we invite you to visit the fairy tale, or rather to the museum to which it is dedicated. This is exactly the museum in Pereslavl-Zalessky where you can and should come with children, but adults won’t be bored here either. In June 2015, the fairy tale museum expanded and another small exhibition dedicated to Slavic mythology appeared on its territory. In general, the museum feels very much like the Uglich Museum of Myths and Superstitions , but even if you have already been to Uglich, it’s also worth a look here, everything here is somehow more fabulous.
