What to see on your own Route Museums Stories, routes and tips from tourists with photos Sightseeing tours Where to stay in Plyos Excursions |
The charming town of Plyos is the pearl of the Ivanovo region. Plyos owes its tourist popularity to the artist Isaac Levitan, who glorified local landscapes in his paintings. After Levitan, other artists and creative personalities flocked to Plyos, which is located on the high bank of the Volga in the northern part of the Ivanovo region, and tourists followed in their footsteps.
What attracts travelers to Plyos now? The historical atmosphere of the Volga settlement: wooden houses with colored shutters, river and wooded landscapes, silence and comfort of the streets. And today artists, poets, and photographers continue to come to Plyos. Even ordinary tourists confirm that creative inspiration seems to be dissolved in the atmosphere of the city: you want to choose unusual angles for photographs, meditatively examine the banks of the Volga, take notes or sketches. But Plyos is interesting not only for its appearance and provincial comfort - the city has enough attractions for an eventful tourist walk.

What to see in 1 day on your own
Plyos is a small town, its area is only 3 sq. km. It’s not difficult to explore Plyos on foot in one day - the original Volga town is created for leisurely walks. But due to the measured rhythm and the constant desire to make stops in spectacular places, there is a risk of missing some attractions. Therefore, before your trip, check out the list of attractions to see in Plyos in 1 day.
Trinity and Vvedenskaya Church
The beginning of the route depends on what vehicle you use to arrive in Plyos. If you get to the city by bus or car, the tourist route will start from the city bus station. Tourists arriving in Plyos by boat can take the same route, but from the end. The first sights on the way are the Trinity and Vvedenskaya churches .
The ensemble of churches is often called the front gate of Plyos. The Church of the Life-Giving Trinity was built in 1808 in the Baroque style and became the first stone church in the city. The Vvedenskaya Church was built as a winter church in the provincial Empire style. The Trinity Church is worth visiting not only from the outside, but also to look inside - there are 19th-century paintings on the walls.

Cathedral Mountain
The main viewpoint of the city is the next point on the route along Plyos. The townspeople call Cathedral Hill the historical center of Plyos. In the 12th century, a defensive fortress was built on this spot. The medieval fortifications have not been preserved in their entirety to this day. All that remained were the moat and the remains of the fortress rampart. But the place is remarkable primarily for its incredibly artistic panoramic views: the Volga expanses with a ribbon of river and ships sailing into the distance, green hills with birch groves in summer, wooden huts with smoke from chimneys in winter. Cathedral Mountain is the personification of the very name of the city. “Pleso” is a section of the river that is clearly visible from a hill. For a better view, benches have been installed, and alleys have been designed for walking.
On Cathedral Hill there are several iconic sights of Plyos: a monument to Vasily I , built in the pre-revolutionary years of the 20th century; the building of Public Offices (erected in the 18th century) with the historical exhibition “Ancient Plyos and Ivanovo Land”; Assumption Cathedral .

Assumption Cathedral
This is one of the oldest churches in the city. The first wooden church on this site was built back in the 15th century under Prince Vasily I. The wooden church, according to historical evidence, stood for 200 years, but eventually burned down. A new stone temple was built in 1699. The temple, simple in architecture (Moscow Baroque), was built on the model of a burnt wooden church. According to another version, the local priests were strict and ascetic; they considered the lavishly decorated temples “secular.” The simple forms of the temple and bell tower combine very harmoniously with the picturesque nature of Plyos. The ensemble of the Assumption Cathedral also included the Kazan Church, destroyed during Soviet times. The ensemble of churches can be seen in Levitan’s famous painting “The Quiet Abode”.

Church of the Resurrection of Christ and Church of the Archangel Michael
After admiring the Volga landscapes and panoramic views of the city, go down Sobornaya Gora Street to Lenin Street and move to another church ensemble. Both churches are located on the Trade Square of Plyos. Like the Assumption Cathedral, the Church of the Resurrection was built on the site of a wooden church. The stone church was built in 1817. The church is notable not only for its golden domes, but also for its high bell tower (32.5 meters) with ten bells (the largest weighs 2.7 tons). The Church of the Resurrection is one of the visiting cards of the city. The temple repeatedly appeared in Soviet films: “Cruel Romance”, “Chinese Service”, “Golden Calf”, “Two Captains”.
Opposite the Church of the Resurrection is the wooden temple of the Archangel Michael . The cage-type church was built in the village of Antonovo in 1825. The church was delivered to Plyos only in 1989. At one time, an exhibition hall with works by local artists was installed inside the temple. Now the chapel is not operational.

Kalashnaya Street
From the ensemble of churches to the embankment, follow Kalashnaya Street . This is the oldest street in the city - it is mentioned in documents from the 17th to 19th centuries. At that time, the street was the main trade artery of Plyos. Trading shops, warehouses and barns were located here. According to historical documents, on Kalashnaya Street (it used to be longer) there were about 200 shops. The architectural appearance of the street has been restored in our time. Now it is stylized as an old fair with wooden shopping arcades. Here you can buy handmade souvenirs from local craftsmen.

Podgornov Estate
Next, move towards the Volga - onto Sovetskaya Street, which runs along the river bed. You will pass by the Museum of Arts and Crafts of the Ivanovo Region and the Plyos Artists Gallery , several restaurants and atmospheric cafes. Closer to the beginning of the street there is a historical mansion - the Podgornov estate . Before the revolution, two houses - 13 and 13a - belonged to the Podgornov family. They lived in a large house, and in a small building 13a valuable items were stored in case of fire. Many wealthy families had such buildings, called “tents.” The owner's initials are preserved on the antique wrought-iron door with floral patterns.

Levitan in Plyos
Next, the embankment Sovetskaya Street turns into Lunacharskogo Street. This area of Plyos is called Zarechnaya Sloboda. Here are the main attractions of the city associated with the life and work of Isaac Levitan in Plyos. This is a small monument to Levitan (bust of the artist at work); Memorial House-Museum ; Levitanovsky Cultural Center ; Mount Levitan .
A well-known saying says: “Plyos glorified Levitan. Levitan glorified Plyos.” According to legend, the young artist was sailing on a motor ship along the Volga and, seeing a town on the hills, was enchanted. He went ashore and settled for a while in a stone house overlooking the river. As a result, the artist returned to Plyos for several years in a row - his best canvases were painted here: 23 paintings and more than 100 sketches. Together with Levitan, other artists came to Plyos. Now their works can be seen in the landscape museum.

If you have time, it is worth visiting all the museums. Next, along Kirov Lane past the Church of the Resurrection of Christ from Bilyukovo climb Mount Levitan. Here is another monument to the artist , a larger one. Isaac Levitan stands at full height in front of an easel. One of Levitan's most famous paintings, "Above Eternal Peace" (exhibited at the Tretyakov Gallery ), was painted from this place. This picture with the church has been repeatedly called “the most Russian landscape.” Previously, the mountain was called Petropavlovskaya. There was a graveyard here - all that remains of it is a wooden church and a cemetery with unusual wooden cross-gravestones.

Marina
Returning from Levitanova Hill to the embankment, walk to the city pier. chamber pier of Plyos is a real movie star. The film “Cruel Romance” was filmed here. The steamship of Paratov, played by Nikita Mikhalkov, moored at the Plyos pier. Now this is one of the favorite places among tourists - here they take funny photographs with two young sculptural compositions: “Plyos Cat” and “Summer Resident” .
Sculpture “Plyos cat” Photo: © Prohoziy
The cat monument is not an abstract sculpture. It depicts a cat named Mukha by artist Vitaly Panchenko. A pensive cat looks at the water surface of the Volga - they say that Mucha herself liked to do this. Unfortunately, Mukha died protecting her kittens from a yard dog. The artist’s friend, Belarusian sculptor Oleg Illarionov, created the monument as a memorial to all departed pets. The sculpture “Summer Resident” does not have such a tragic story - it depicts a girl relaxing on the embankment. Many people call the sculpture “Muse”. It is believed that the sculpture depicts the young artist Sofya Kuvshinnikova - Levitan's passion. Their relationship inspired Chekhov's story "The Jumper". Here, at the pier, 1 day in Plyos ends.

Attractions in the vicinity of Plyos
Near Plyos there are several preserved estates. Retiring military men and nobles who moved here from the capital lived here; F. Chaliapin acquired a dacha in these places.
Estate "Alekseevskaya"
- Address: s. Nogino.
The estate is located in the village of Nogino, 6 km from Ples. The estate was built between 1785 and 1800. Its owner, a retired guards officer, built a mansion in the style of the famous park in Petrodvorets.
In the center of the estate is the master's house, surrounded by a park that gradually turned into a real forest. A four-row alley leads to the house, which was used to receive guests arriving at the house. Numerous alleys and paths scatter throughout the park.
The area of the estate is small - less than 10 hectares, but a large pond (more than 11 hectares) visually expands the perimeter. The dacha seems even larger due to its harmonious fusion with the fields and copses surrounding the landmark.
Estate "Quiet Marina"
- Address: 4 km south of Plyos.
Downstream of the Volga, 4 km from Plyos, is the Quiet Marina estate. The estate was built on the high and steep right bank of the river. The coastal hills are cut by ravines and are overgrown with dense mixed forest.
The estate itself “runs down” from the height of the hill along its slope to the river. The estate is bordered on both sides by ravines. They are a natural boundary, dividing the mansion with neighboring properties.
The western side of the “Quiet Pier” borders the Maksimtsevsky ravine, from the east the estate is limited by the Khmelitsky ravine. Once upon a time, the estate was adjacent to F. Chaliapin’s dacha “Khmelnitsy”.
Dacha F.I. Chaliapin
- Address: Shalyapino village.
In 1910, the outstanding singer traveled along the Volga with the artist Klodt. Chaliapin was imbued with the beauty of these places and decided to purchase an estate here. Architect S. Kuznetsov developed the project. The singer finally approved it in 1912.
The small estate of Khmelnytsia becomes the singer’s dacha, where he wanted to live after completing his artistic career. But the dreams of the great bass were not destined to come true. In 1918, he was confirmed as artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater, and the Soviet authorities nationalized his estate. Later it housed a rural commune and a home for starving children of the Volga region.
In 1923, the dacha was expanded with various extensions. The Poroshino holiday home was created on this site. Near the library, in the left wing of the building, a room-museum of the famous singer was organized.

Ples is probably one of the smallest cities, if not in all of Russia, then in the Ivanovo region for sure. Its area is only about 3 square meters. km, and the population is approximately 2 thousand people. But it’s rare to find so many historical and cultural treasures in one place. Probably, like no other, the Russian proverb applies to Plyos - “the spool is small, but dear.”

When to go and what to bring
The uniqueness of Plyos is that, unlike many Volga cities, and indeed cities in central Russia, it is good in any weather, even inclement weather. The “fault” for this is the landscape and the architecture of the century before last, untouched by modern brainless development. The breathtaking Volga views, diluted with church domes and one-dimensional buildings, are good at any time of the year, only the colors of the landscape will change from the cheerful green of summer to the gold of autumn and the chilly silence of winter.
Of course, going here in the summer means not only enjoying the warmth and light, not only the opportunity to swim and sunbathe. This is also an opportunity to enjoy the special gastronomic delights of Ples: delicious beer and kvass (the brand is Riatovsky Brewery, try all the varieties and find yours, and the kvass is simply excellent), smoked freshly caught fish and corners with bream (these are open pies with fish - extraordinary delicious). These are the best Plesov souvenirs; we, living on the Volga, saw and tried some fish for the first time - for example, the red-eye!
By the way, on Cathedral Hill you can buy handicraft wooden magnets - of quite decent quality.
Museums of Plyos in 1 day
Thanks to the intimacy and compactness of the city, tourists in 1 day in Plyos not only have time to visually inspect architectural objects and admire the Volga panoramas from the hills, but also visit museums. It is quite possible to see the exhibitions of 2-3 museums in a day. The city has both small private museums with interactive elements and government institutions with valuable paintings.
House-Museum of I. I. Levitan
The memorial house-museum is located in the Solodovnikov mansion. Levitan lived in this house in 1888. Here the artist, together with Sofia Kuvshinnikova and Alexei Stepanov, rented two rooms on the mezzanine. It is this house that is depicted in the painting “The Dilapidated House”.
The exhibition in the house-museum is presented in three halls. On the ground floor, visitors are introduced to the work of Isaac Levitan - the artist’s original works are exhibited here. The mezzanine recreates the original furnishings of the rooms from the late 19th century. The house museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday. Opening hours vary depending on the time of year.

Landscape Museum
Not far from the pier there is another Plyos art museum. The Landscape Museum is Levitan's dream come true. He told his students that he dreamed of buying his own workshop and opening a landscape house in it. The museum is located in the house from the painting “Evening. Zolotoy Plyos" is an 18th-century mansion.
The permanent exhibition of the museum is a collection of works by landscape artists: Polenov, Dubkovsky, Sudkovsky, Perepletchikov and others. Temporary exhibitions most often include works by contemporary landscape painters. The museum hosts a thematic festival and creative meetings of artists.

Travkin Museum Center
For two decades, a private museum dedicated to the life and traditions of the medieval Russian family functioned in Plyos. It was founded by local archaeologist Travkin. Currently, the museum-estate of the ancient Russian family is closed. Now in Plyos you can visit the museum center of the archaeologist. P.N. Travkin gathers around the fire those who want to listen to stories about the medieval life of the city, about excavations in the vicinity of Plyos. Tourists will be shown places where valuable artifacts were found, introduced to archaeologists' tools, and shown rare photographs and reconstructions. The museum center hosts thematic lectures and excursions around Plyos and the city’s environs with stories about how ordinary people lived here several centuries ago.
Museum "Art Crafts of the Ivanovo Region"
The exhibition is located in the historical building of Flour Rows. The collection of 180 exhibits is located in two halls. Here visitors get acquainted with the works of masters from all over the Ivanovo region. In the eastern hall, works by the masters of lacquer miniature painting Palekh and Kholui are exhibited. The main attraction of the exhibition is a set of furniture painted based on Russian folk tales. The western hall displays works made on a jacquard loom from the second half of the 19th century, and products from the Yakovlevskaya manufactory (snow-white tablecloths and towels). In the foyer of the museum there is an art salon where you can purchase works by masters of the Ivanovo region.

Museum "Ancient Ples and Ivanovo Land"
The exhibition is located in the building of the Chambers of Representatives on Cathedral Hill. The basement floor houses a permanent exhibition that introduces visitors to the history of the Ivanovo region from ancient times to the 17th century. Guests will learn about how the peoples of these lands changed, what their homes looked like at different times, and how the city of Plyos developed as a fortress. The most valuable collection is the Alabuga treasure, consisting of 390 items of women's jewelry from the 7th century. The virtual part of the exhibition allows you to “try on” ancient costumes. Temporary exhibitions are held on the first and second floors.

The sculpture “Summer Resident” was installed in honor of the 600th anniversary of the founding of the city of Plyos in 2010. “Summer resident” personifies the “dacha” times that entered local history from the second half of the 19th century. In those days, local residents often rented out their houses for the summer. This sculpture depicts a girl looking into the distance of the Volga River through an easel. Looking at the “canvas” of the easel you can see a magnificent landscape.

Church of St. Barbara
Another beautiful church in Plyos; For many years it has been decorating the city with its white stone walls. The modest provincial church in the classicist style was erected in the 18th–19th centuries - the exact date is unknown, and the bell tower was completed in 1821. It is likely that the church itself was much earlier.
Church of St. Barbara
Levitan often depicted this temple on his canvases. Perhaps the reason was that from here the beautiful Volga open spaces open up, which will leave few people indifferent. The modest and even ascetic church contrasts with the richly decorated bell tower, graceful arches and columns. The interior of the temple is no less interesting. There are glue paintings on the walls on New Testament themes. They tell the story of the life of Christ and are decorated with ornamental frames.

In the “Russian House” you will find yourself in a complex of buildings and premises whose architecture is made in the ancient style. This is not a simple museum with ancient exhibits, but a recreated house of the medieval town of Ples. The museum was created according to evidence found during archaeological excavations from the 13th century.
So in the museum of the ancient Russian family on the territory of the center, life in 1237 is shown. It shows a jewelers' house that once existed in that place, according to the finds. Later in 1238, during the Horde invasion, the house was burned.

Monument to Isaac Levitan

Monument to Isaac Levitan
The sculptural Levitan looks at the Volga, which he so often depicted on his canvases. In one hand he holds a palette of paints, and he presses the other to his heart. The monument is made of black stone and stands on a granite pedestal. On the 600th anniversary of the city, the monument was restored and the pedestal was replaced with a more durable one.

Let's sum it up
Small towns or even villages are often not appreciated. For example, the beautiful Pushkin Mountains are practically an island of calm compared to bustling megacities, and the sights that are worth seeing in Ulyanovsk will help you truly relax and unwind.
Plyos is a very small town, but many tourists come here to stroll through the parks, look at the impressive landscapes of the Volga and visit interesting museums. In them you can touch the past, learn about interesting traditions of past centuries, and even become a participant in an ancient wedding. Is this possible to imagine in large cities?
