City `s history
Belgorod is one of the oldest cities in the country, which arose on the Seversky Settlement on the banks of the river. Seversky Settlement is a settlement of the Eastern Slavs that arose in the second half of the 1st millennium.
According to the generally accepted opinion of historians, the city was first founded by decree of Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich on September 11, 1596 as a Border Fortress. Since 1658, the city became the center of the Belgorod region - instead of the defense line that protected the Muscovite kingdom from Tatar invasions.
In 965, this territory passed to the Pereyaslav Principality of Kievan Rus. The famous Belgorod fortress was located on the right bank of the river. On the eastern side it was fenced by a river, on the southern side by a huge ravine, and on the northern side by an impenetrable forest. Service here was not easy: it and neighboring areas were raided not only by the Crimean khans, but also by the feudal lords of Lithuania, who conquered most of Ukraine. In one of these attacks the city was destroyed.
In 1779 it became the district center of the Kursk province. For a long time, the industry was focused on the extraction of chalk, the production of bricks, lime, saltpeter, and wax. Changes began only with the development of industry and the abolition of serfdom. A railway was built, which made it possible to establish trade relations with villages and neighboring cities. In the twentieth century, the city was rightfully considered a railway junction. Industry quickly recovered after the end of the revolution and civil war. By 1926, the pre-war level had been reached, as a result of which a power station was built in the floodplain of the Seversky Donets. In the 30s A boiler plant is being built, the number of hospitals, kindergartens and schools is growing, and the pace of house construction is increasing.
During the Second World War, the city and its surroundings were the site of fierce battles. In 1941, there was a confrontation between the Nazi and Russian armies, as a result of which the Red Army left the city. Residents found themselves under occupation. The shootings took place in the city park, which is now called Memory Park. As a result of the occupation, everything was destroyed, not even entire buildings remained; out of 34,000 inhabitants, no more than 150 remained. And on June 12, one of the largest battles took place near Prokhorovka. The enemy was stopped, and at the end of fierce fighting, he was thrown back to Belgorod.

Another reason is the rise in groundwater levels due to increased rainfall, and the third is possible leakage of sewer pipes.
In order to preserve the park and solve the problem of flooding of its territories, the city authorities checked the latter and in the future they plan to install drainage structures in flooded areas, plant moisture-absorbing vegetation, and invite landscape designers to improve this part of the territory with the help of an artificial waterfall and moisture-loving vegetation.

The zoo was not created right away - at first it was a zoo corner in 1988, and until 1991 it was also part of Victory Park. There are approximately 90 species of animals (more than two hundred individuals in total), of which 15 species are listed in the Red Book. In the enclosures there are representatives of the feline group, wolves, foxes, as well as kangaroos and camels, which are unusual for our area. Currently, the pedestrian area is finished with paving slabs. Seven flower beds were laid out on the boulevard, and 70 seedlings of various tree species were planted. In summer, vacationers are delighted with 2,700 rose bushes. The area is illuminated with lanterns.
