This bay, also called Avachinskaya Bay, is considered one of the largest ice-free sea bays in the world and the main cargo water gates of Kamchatka, with the largest port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The Paratunka and Avacha rivers flow into the bay, and the shores, which are of volcanic origin, are very picturesque. From the water you can clearly see the slopes of the active Avachinskaya Sopka volcano, as well as the dormant Kozelsky Volcano and Koryakskaya Sopka.

In the northern part of the bay in Mokhovaya Bay, right on the old pier of the former cannery, sea lions have set up a rookery. Closer to the exit from the bay there is another interesting place - the small island “Grandma’s Stone”. Its extensive system of underwater grottoes and caves and rich flora and fauna attract diving enthusiasts.

People come to the bay for fishing and crabbing.

Russian Navy vessels are stationed in the bay, so an appropriate permit is required to take a boat trip.

Three Brothers is one of the most memorable natural sites of Avacha Bay. An unusual rock formation in the form of three pillars protruding from the water at the entrance to the bay.

According to legend, once upon a time three brothers lived near the bay; they loved each other and their city very much. In those days, the city often suffered from destruction due to high tsunami waves. People did not know how to protect their houses from it, they simply hid in the mountains, waited out the violence of the elements, and then returned and rebuilt their homes. But one day the residents decided to build a barrier that would prevent the wave, and all the townspeople, young and old, tirelessly carried stones and built a high wall. And when their strength ran out and people realized that a new wave was approaching, and they did not have time to complete the dam, panic occurred. Everyone ran, except for the three brothers, who stayed behind and closed the unfinished gap in the wall with their bodies. The dam stood, and the wave receded once and for all. And the brothers’ desire to save their city was so strong that they turned into stones and are still standing guard.

Monument to Peter and Paul

The relatively new monument, opened in 2005, is installed in a square on the embankment where locals like to spend time.

The holy apostles Peter and Paul are considered the patrons of the city. On October 17, 1740, the Second Kamchatka Expedition under the command of Vitus Bering entered Avacha Bay on two packet boats. Port of Petropavlovsk

The Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky port combines a passenger sea terminal, a trading hub, a naval base and a fish production and processing base.

The port is located in the central part of the city, on the banks of the Peter and Paul Bay, which in turn opens into Avacha Bay.

Marine Station

The Marine Passenger Station of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky opened in 2021 after reconstruction. Before that, he had not worked for 25 years: border guards and customs officers boarded the ships themselves, and passengers got to the shore in boats.

Now the port can accommodate cruise ships at the new pier and handle 200 people at a time. From the sea terminal, ships depart to Japan and South Korea, and across Russia to Vladivostok, Sakhalin and the port of Vanino.

From the history of the port

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky was originally built as a port city, so the ship harbor was the center of major events in the history of Kamchatka from the time of its development. The first settlements were built near the port, ships of famous navigators arrived at it, it was the center of resistance of the Petropavlovsk residents to the enemy fleet during the Crimean War and the place from where the Kamchatka landing party launched in World War II. An equipped sea trade port was officially built in 1943 and began accepting cargo within a year.

Taxi number Maxim 22-22-22 Petropavlovsk - Kamchatsky 3. If you don’t have a lot of things, you can easily get there by bus. There are 2 stops in a row near the Airport (70 meters), be careful, one in P-Kamchatsky (27 km), the other in Elizovo (4 km). You need to go to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Get off at the final stop - called “KP” - this is the geographical center of the city, you can call a taxi there (it will be inexpensive) or find a suitable bus to your apartment.

Airport - Stop - 70 meters Airport - Stop - 70 meters

What to see in the city? Route one: Lukomsky Route) Before this route, I strongly recommend watching Valdis Pelsh’s documentary “Kamchatka Guards”. The film (50 minutes) is cool, and walking around these places will be 100 times more interesting.

02. Stella “City of Military Glory” The honorary title of the Russian Federation “City of Military Glory” was awarded to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on November 3, 2011 . The height of the stele is 17 meters including the mound. The monument is finished with natural granite brought from the Baltic deposit in St. Petersburg. For the installation of the stele in Petropavlovsk, 300 tons of granite and 5 tons of bronze products were brought.

From Decree of the President of Russia No. 1458 of November 3, 2011: “For the courage, fortitude and mass heroism shown by the city’s defenders in the struggle for the freedom and independence of the Fatherland, to award the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky the honorary title of the Russian Federation “City of Military Glory.”

03. Monument to Peter and Paul On October 17, 1740, packet boats of the Second Kamchatka Expedition under the names “St. Apostle Peter” and “St. Apostle Paul” entered the harbor. It was then that Vitus Bering decided to name this harbor - the harbor of St. Apostles Peter and Paul, and the new settlement that appeared on its shore - the Peter and Paul Harbor. It was this date that became the date of birth of the city. The grand opening of the monument to the heavenly patrons of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the embankment of Avachinskaya Bay took place on October 16, 2005 . At the same time, the consecration of the monument took place.

Monument in winter against the backdrop of Avachinsky volcano

04. EthnoVillage on the shore of Lake Kultuchnoye is a very long and very expensive project, there is nothing more to say. It’s better to tell the story of Kultuchny Lake. It is a rare city in Russia that has a lake in its center. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky has such uniqueness. Kultuchnoye Lake, together with the smooth surface of Avachinskaya Bay framed by hills, creates a unique landscape and unique beauty, a flavor that distinguishes our regional center from many cities. Of all the versions of the origin of the name of the lake, the derivative from the word kultuk, corner, dead end, comes closest to the truth. On the plan of the Peter and Paul Harbor drawn up by navigator Rostovtsev in 1800, the lake is called Dolgiy. It was also called Upper. On the map of the Petropavlovsk port with the locations of the batteries, dated 1849, it was already called Kultushny. Modern cartographers and local historians call it Kultuchny.

05. Restaurant Kambala On TripAdvisor 3 out of 5, I myself have not been to this restaurant, since it was another longitude, but the place obliges. All reviews have in common the long wait for food.

06. Maksutov Battery Memorial Complex “Maksutov Battery” is a memorial complex located on the Signal Peninsula in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia. It is dedicated to the Crimean War of 1853-1856, which took place not only in the Crimea, but also in Kamchatka. The battle with the Anglo-French took place here. The army was led by Prince Dmitry Maskutov, who personifies the glory of Russian weapons for local residents. The army, which was led by the prince, fought on the Nikolskaya Hill against the Anglo-French army, and in memory of this, a memorial was erected, which is what we are talking about.

07. Park on Nikolskaya Sopka The renewed park on the hill of the hill opened in the summer of 2021. Before that, it had been neglected since the sixties. Until the beginning of the 20th century, any construction was prohibited here and the hill remained covered with wild forest. After the revolution, the hill began to be improved and by the end of the 1930s it had already turned into a full-fledged cultural park. A summer theater, a dance floor, attractions, a restaurant and even a parachute tower were built in it. People celebrated holidays in the park. Young people walked in pairs along the illuminated paths. Nikolskaya Sopka has become the main vacation spot for Petropavlovsk residents. That’s when its unofficial name stuck – the hill of Love. In the sixties, the center of gravity of urban activity moved to Lenin Square and the park fell into disrepair.

In 2021, the park on Nikolskaya Sopka came to life again and now welcomes a large number of guests. The city administration spent two years and 100,000,000 rubles on its improvement. The paths on the hill were repaired, gazebos, themed panels, playgrounds, additional lighting, and a stationary toilet were installed. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the park. In the central part there is a food court and a fair where you can buy local souvenirs.

08. Krasintsev Street used to be called Nikolskaya, but in 1934 it was renamed Krasentsev in honor of the crew of the icebreaker "Krasin", which repaired the city power plant while staying in the port, and before that it also bore the names Ozernaya and Krasnoarmeyskaya. The houses, built for the Ministry of Finance (they lived in one of them and worked in the others), have been preserved since the beginning of the 20th century because they were built from imported wood. They also belonged to the administration and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. They employed officials involved in the management of Kamchatka. And it was called Ozernaya because it went straight to the lake. The current building of the administration of the Kamchatka Territory and the entire Lenin Square (or Teatralnaya) are located on the backfilled territory of Kultuchnoye Lake. One building on the street. Krasintsev (at the entrance to Nikolskaya Sopka) was restored very well; even Canadian wood was used in its renovation; the other one, in the same place, was a little worse. These houses last a long time because the wood is excellent.

09. Monument Chapel (to the events of 1854) Necropolis Residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky pay attention to the memory of the battles of 1854. There are four thematic monuments in the city that form the memorial complex of the defense of Petropavlovsk. This is the Maksutov Battery (06) and not far from it is the monument “Glory” - you will recognize it by its spire with a cross, two hundred meters from it there is a pedestal with a cannon pointed towards the bay. But the main monument of those events is the necropolis on Nikolskaya Sopka. After the defense of Petropavlovsk from the Anglo-French fleet, the bodies of the dead were buried in a mass grave on the eastern slope. Crosses and slabs were installed at this place several times, but they have not survived to this day. In 1912, a stone chapel was built above the necropolis in memory of the battle. On the right side of it, 35 defenders of the city are buried, on the left - 38 sailors of the Anglo-French fleet.

10. Kamchatka Theater of Drama and Comedy In 1914, the governor of the Kamchatka region N.V. Monomakhov opened the first theater in the city, built according to the design of the architect K.A. Zaranek. He was given the name of the Monomakhovs. After the opening of the theater, the first film shows began to be held in its premises, on the initiative of the official for special assignments under Governor A.P. Zhuravsky. In 1964, a new theater building was opened. 12. Monument to the Liberators of the Kuril Islands Events preceding the creation of the monument. On September 2, 1945, the act of unconditional surrender of Japan was signed. This meant the end of the Second World War and the beginning of peace, won at the cost of unheard of sacrifices. The monuments erected in Port Arthur and Seisin, Vladivostok and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Severo-Kurilsk and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky will forever remind us of this. The last pages of the Great Patriotic War were written in the Pacific Ocean. One of these pages is related to the liberation of the Kuril Islands. This most complex combat operation was planned to be carried out by the forces of the Kamchatka defensive region, led by Major General A.R. Gnechko and the Petropavlovsk naval base under the command of Captain 1st Rank D.G. Ponomareva. Commander of the landing operation A.R. Gnechko decided to land troops in the northeastern part of Shumshu Island, take possession of it, and then strike at the islands of Paramushir and Onekotan. The island of Shumshu, separated from Kamchatka by a narrow strait, was heavily fortified. Prepared by the Japanese as a springboard for an attack on Kamchatka, the island was full of powerful fortifications. The island fortress, built by Chinese and other prisoners of war, was considered impregnable by the Japanese. On August 23, 1945, at the cost of enormous efforts and sacrifices, the Shumshu garrison stopped resisting. The Motherland highly appreciated the feat of the liberators. More than 4 thousand participants in the Kuril assault were awarded government awards. 9 of them became Heroes of the Soviet Union. Vsch

14. Kamchatka Regional United Museum The history of the museum goes back more than a hundred years. In 1911, on the initiative of the governor of the Kamchatka region V.V. Perfilyev and the local intelligentsia, the foundation of a regional scientific and industrial museum was laid. The museum was located in the building of the office of the governor of the Kamchatka region.

Its first exhibits were items handed over by travelers and scientists who explored Kamchatka at the beginning of the 20th century. Subsequently, after several moves, in 1982 the Kamchatka Regional Museum of Local Lore returned to the building of the former governor’s office, where it is currently located.

The museum has a large museum collection, which includes more than 120 thousand unique museum objects on the history of the region. The museum's funds contain objects on archeology, ethnography of the indigenous peoples of Kamchatka, unique books of the 17th-21st centuries, paintings and graphic works by Kamchatka artists, memorial collections and archival funds. The KSBI "Kamchatka Regional United Museum" studies the nature, history of Kamchatka and the culture of the peoples living on its territory.

15. Nikolskaya Sopka Nikolskaya Sopka is a small ridge located in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the historical center of the city. Sopka was founded in December 1983 and is still a very significant place both for the city and for all of Russia. On the shores of a small bay where Nikolskaya Sopka is located, construction of the entire city began. Today Nikolskaya Sopka is a natural monument and is a landmark of the city, which is popularly called the “Hill of Love”. This place has become a favorite among residents and guests of the city - here you can relax, take a walk and just enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Geologically, Nikolskaya Sopka is a tectonic block, the maximum height of which is 108 meters. The hill is composed of siliceous rocks that were formed on the basis of volcanic ash 70-90 million years ago. According to scientists' research, during the Cretaceous period there was a sea with underwater volcanoes on the mountain's territory. The western slopes of the hill have rocks that form a cliff, and on the northern slopes and at the top of the Nikolskaya hill there is a forest of stone birch, which is very common on the slopes of the Kamchatka ridges.

Next we go to the most important observation point in the city. Mishennaya Hill. Follow the route; if you get lost, ask the locals, since the road passes through garages and there is no obvious tourist trail. You need to get to Avtomobilistov Street 16 - this is the last house from which there is a forest road to the top. You need a large gazebo at the very top, not to be confused with the small one that is a little closer!
