The official date of the founding of Lipetsk is considered to be 1703, when on the banks of the Lipovka River, by order of the emperor, several ironworks were built, around which a settlement was formed. Production gradually expanded, the population of the village grew, and already in 1779 it received the status of a county town. At the beginning of the 19th century. It was found that the waters of mineral springs in the vicinity of abandoned metallurgical plants have healing properties. This discovery turned the city into a popular resort. Today Lipetsk is one of the largest industrial, trade, educational and cultural centers of the Black Earth Region, actively visited by Russian and foreign tourists.
TOP-5 attractions of Lipetsk
The sights of Lipetsk, photos of which will take a worthy place in any traveler’s album, are colorful and varied. Acquaintance with the city usually begins with an inspection of historical and architectural monuments, which are considered its calling cards.
Monument to Peter I
- Address: Peter the Great Square. Transport stop "Peter the Great Square".
Many Lipetsk residents consider Peter the Great to be the founder of the policy, because it was on his instructions that ironworks were founded in the vicinity of the present city. Back in the 19th century. A stele was erected in honor of the emperor in Lipetsk, and in 1996 a monument to the reformer tsar appeared on the square of the same name. A bronze statue of the autocrat, confidently walking with a scroll in his hand, is placed on the top of a column trimmed with marble tiles, decorated with rasters of ships and cartouches. On the sides of the rectangular pedestal there are bronze plaques with bas-reliefs depicting the deeds of Peter the Great.
Cathedral Square
- Address: Soviet district. Transport stop "Zegel Street".
Nowadays the beautiful square is considered the hallmark of Lipetsk, but this was not always the case. Once upon a time there were salt rows, shops selling all sorts of things, and a city storehouse building where the treasury was kept. Everything changed in the middle of the 19th century, when the construction of the Nativity Cathedral was completed. Religious processions and significant ceremonial events were held in the square near the temple. With the advent of Soviet power, it became the heart of Lipetsk. In 1958, the construction of the magnificent building of the House of Soviets, surrounded by a colonnade, was completed. A little later, a monument to Lenin was erected on the square, and its perimeter was lined with luxurious blue spruce trees. The composition is completed by a majestic stone staircase with cascading fountains leading to Petrovsky Proezd.
Monument to the Founders of Lipetsk
- Address: Plekhanov Square. Transport stop "Plekhanov Square".
In the summer of 2008, Lipetsk acquired a landmark that immediately became one of its symbols. Then, on Plekhanov Square, the grand opening of the monument to the founders of the city took place. The steel column, surrounded by a laurel wreath, is crowned with a sculpture of an angel blessing the townspeople. The pillar rises on a pedestal lined with granite, which is also a pedestal for five sculptures. The sculptures depict a blacksmith, an official, an engineer, a foundry worker, and a master shipbuilder, dressed in the uniforms of the Peter the Great era.
Victory Stele
- Address: Victory Square. Transport stop "Victory Square".
The majestic monument is rightly considered one of the iconic sights of Lipetsk for several reasons. Firstly, the city made a huge contribution to the victory over the Nazis, paying for it with the lives of tens of thousands of its sons and daughters. Secondly, the stele, rising 38 m, is one of the most grandiose monuments of its kind in Russia. The base of the pillar, consisting of three structures covered with white enamel and gilding, is surrounded by a laurel wreath. The monument is crowned with a huge Order of Victory, inlaid with artificial diamonds. The diameter of the reconstruction of the award is almost 4 meters, and the order weighs about 1.5 tons. 250 rhinestones were used to make it.
Monument to the 300th anniversary of the city
- Address: Petrovsky proezd. Transport stop "Revolution Square".
Lipetsk received another magnificent gift for its 300th anniversary, celebrated in 2003. It was a delightful monument installed on the shore of the picturesque Komsomolsky pond, right in front of the stunning floating fountains. Here, in the center of a small pool, a bronze model of a small sailing ship from the time of Peter the Great was installed on a pedestal decorated with high reliefs. Two ancient cannons were placed on both sides of the monument, which rises 12 meters high. Overall the composition looks simply amazing.
"Forward to the past". Photo report about Lipetsk from different decades
20:00, October 21, 2015
Society
Fans of the Back to the Future film trilogy around the world Fr. It was on October 21, 2015 that the main characters of the film in its second part fly into the future. This day was also celebrated in Lipetsk - and by making a separate two-minute video.
At the same time, the editors of LipetskMedia propose to do the opposite - to go, so to speak, “forward to the past” and find out what some of the streets and squares of Lipetsk looked like in past decades, and compare them with our time.
Let's start our short historical walk from Victory Square (formerly Kolkhoz Square).
View of the now former Sputnik cinema. And, yes, don’t be surprised in the first photo on the right edge there is a fence. At that time there was a private sector here.
Photo taken from the Sputnik cinema itself. In place of the “house with blue balconies” there is a memorial alley dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. In the early 90s, it was replaced by the first commercial kiosks, later popularly nicknamed “Lipetsk Broadway”, and a few years later the construction of a well-known multi-storey building began.
This photo of Victory Square was taken from the current Mercury Trading House. Previously, it was called “Cottbus” in honor of the German (then GDR) sister city of Lipetsk.
A rare view of the former Kolkhoz Square. Nowadays, nine-story buildings rise on the site of the water tower. The Assumption Cemetery Church, visible from behind the tower, was finally destroyed in the first half of the 70s, and the cemetery was leveled by bulldozers. Now we are, as they say, “walking on the bones of our ancestors,” and all that remains of the church is a small mound in the courtyard behind the multi-story buildings.
You also don’t believe that this is the same place? At first we didn’t believe it either...until we checked it.
And a little more of Victory Square. View from the current underground passage to the former Supermarket. Once upon a time there was no wild traffic here and it was safe to walk with small children.
Let's walk a little around the Victory Square. The photo shows Papin Street, a view of the Transfiguration Cemetery Church, which was closed by the authorities for only 7 years and was the main place of prayer for the majority of Lipetsk Orthodox believers for several decades.
Papin Street, the power line pole was already here in the 60s, but the “fire” appeared a little later.
Papin Street, in the distance you can see a large private sector, located on the site of the current Central Market.
In the 60s, Kamenny Log seemed fresh and green, the construction of buildings near its edges and the tram bridge was still ahead, and Lipovka was a river.
In the 80s, Lipovka had already turned into a familiar stream, but the slopes of the Kamenny Log were not yet going to be overgrown.
We wander a little more in the area of Victory Square. Both photos were taken at the beginning of Pobeda Avenue near the building of the former Uyut store.
And a little more of Pobeda Avenue.
Let's continue our walk, going down from Victory Square along Nedelina Street. On the right in the photo are the famous public baths.
Nedelina Street - private houses were still found here until the very beginning of the 90s.
Turn from Nedelina Street to M. Gorky Street. Once upon a time there was a tram here and there was a “Central Market” stop. In the photo from 1980, on the right is the central entrance to the market, of which now there is no trace left - neither the entrance nor the market.
We make another turn - onto Torgovaya Street. The site of the public canteen and private house is now occupied by the Nikolskoye cafe and various offices.
We turn onto Barasheva Street. So that no one gets lost in all these turns, to the right of both photos is the Metallurg stadium and one of its training grounds.
We turn onto Pervomaiskaya Street and see the building of the famous “red” pharmacy - one of the few surviving pre-revolutionary buildings in Lipetsk.
We go down to the intersection of Pervomaiskaya and Frunze Street. Once upon a time there were trams here, and when you saw the buildings here, you could have thought that Lipetsk had been bombed by the Luftwaffe just a couple of years ago.
A view of the same intersection from the opposite side - the pre-revolutionary merchant building still stands; on the right in the photo from 1980 is the beginning of construction of the House of Unions, which now houses the Federation of Trade Unions of the Lipetsk Region.
Pervomaiskaya Street smoothly turns into Peter the Great Square (formerly Karl Marx Square), and we see from an old photo that on the site of the huge Sberbank building there used to be a tram stop, as well as a tram control room. Once upon a time, Karl Marx Square was surrounded by tram tracks and was the most important transport hub in Lipetsk.
We head towards Teatralnaya Square. In the 70s, on the site of the current party clubs “Masks” and “Fairy Tales” there was a film lecture hall.
Descent from Sovetskaya Street to Teatralnaya Square. In the old photo there is already the building of the City Executive Committee and the City Council (on the right) with the gilded head of the “forever young” Ilyich (for those who like to carefully look at photographs), now the Lipetsk City Hall, but the construction of the second building of the city administration (in the modern photo - on the left) hasn't started yet.
Apollo and his chariot near the Drama Theater named after L.N. Tolstoy. Find the “nth” number of differences.
Descent from the theater to Theater Square. For several years now, a “sophisticated” high-rise building has been built on the site of dilapidated houses. And the old houses appeared on the site of the Ascension Church, which was demolished in the 60s.
Sapperny Descent (formerly Plekhanovsky Descent).
A little more of the Sapper Descent. There was also a tram here, surrounded by shabby shacks. According to the recollections of old-timers, once the tram derailed right on the descent at full speed. There were victims, the number of which, according to the “fashion” of those times, was kept silent.
And the last “was and became” about Sapper Descent.
We will finish the photo walk at one of the main symbols of Lipetsk - the monument to Emperor Peter I, on Petrovsky Spusk.

Monuments of history and architecture
Among the things that are definitely worth seeing in Lipetsk, experienced travelers highlight historical and architectural monuments. Over the three centuries of the city’s existence, a lot of them have accumulated.
Lipetsk Diocese building
- Address: st. Lenina, 34A. Transport stop "Sanatorium Voskhod".
The history of the colorful mansion, in the premises of which the structures of the Lipetsk and Yelets diocese are now located, is very interesting. The building, erected in the middle of the last century and considered an excellent example of the Stalinist Empire style, housed a popular cinema until the beginning of this century. The building was handed over to the church in 2004. Then a large-scale reconstruction was carried out, as a result of which the mansion acquired a massive glazed dome and began to look even more beautiful.
Master's House
- Address: st. Lenina, 2. Transport stop “Lenin Street”.
The magnificent building in the Art Nouveau style has been decorating Lipetsk since 1910. At first, the mansion with elegant balconies, attics, and an openwork arcade belt belonged to the pharmacist V. Vyazhlinsky. After the revolution, the building was used for various purposes, and since 1992, exhibitions of the museum of the remarkable Soviet artist V.S. have been housed within its walls. Sorokina. The grand opening of the institution was timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the painter’s birth. The master's paintings are displayed on the second floor, and the first floor is occupied by a salon where creative meetings with art masters are held and concerts are held.
Stela to Peter I
- Address: Petrovsky proezd. Transport stop "Lenin Street".
Already in the middle of the 19th century. Lipetsk has become a popular resort. Merchants especially often came here for treatment. One of them, Pavel Nebuchenov, who was healed of a dangerous illness in the local waters, decided to present the city with a gift. In 1869, a memorial stele in honor of Peter I was made with his money and installed on Petrovsky Spusk. In the center of the site, surrounded by an openwork cast-iron fence, a 10-meter trihedral pyramid rises. It is placed on a pedestal decorated with bas-reliefs depicting the god Hephaestus, the patron saint of metallurgists, the goddess Hygeia, a symbol of health, and a cast-iron plaque with a memorial inscription in honor of Peter the Great.
Monument to the heroes of World War I
- Address: st. V. Tereshkova. Transport stop "Kamenny Log".
In Lipetsk, the memory of compatriots who gave their lives for their homeland is sacredly honored, regardless of what period in the country’s history this happened. Therefore, the appearance of a monument to the heroes of World War I in the city is not surprising. The stele, at the top of which a double-headed eagle proudly spread its wings, has three sides and tapers towards the top. This shape, according to the authors of the monument project, should symbolize the bayonet of a rifle - the main weapon of the Russian army at the beginning of the last century.
Cathedrals and churches of Lipetsk
Any tourist will be interested in visiting the colorful city churches. Architecture connoisseurs will be able to admire the exteriors of churches, and religious travelers will kneel before the Christian shrines stored in reliquaries.

- Website: https://www.sobor-lipetsk.cerkov.ru
- Address: Cathedral Square, 4. Transport stop “Lenin Street”.
Since its consecration in 1807, the Nativity Cathedral has been the main temple of the city and its iconic landmark. This magnificent monument of architectural classicism cannot but amaze. The five-tiered bell tower of the temple, rising 60 m above the ground, is clearly visible from any part of Lipetsk. Numerous pilgrims from all over the country strive to get to the cathedral. Revered Orthodox relics are kept here - the miraculous image of the Passionate Lipetsk Mother of God, the icon of St. Uar, a shrine with particles of the relics of the Kiev-Pechersk saints.
Ancient Assumption Church
- Opening hours: daily, from 8:00 to 19:00.
- Telephone.
- Website: https://www.lumm.cerkov.ru
- Address: st. Saltykova-Shchedrina, 80A. Transport stop "Proletarskaya Street".
The oldest city church is especially revered by Lipetsk residents. There are at least two reasons for this. Firstly, according to legend, it was here in ancient times that the icon “Life-Giving Spring” appeared to the suffering who came to the spring for healing water. Secondly, Peter the Great made a stop at this place during the Azov campaign. According to eyewitnesses, the emperor wanted to personally drink the spring water to be convinced of its healing properties. The building of the pillarless temple, made in the Russian Baroque style, dates back to the 17th century. Since 2003, the church has the status of a monastery.
Church of All Saints
- Opening hours: daily, from 7:00 to 19:00.
- Telephone.
- Website: https://www.vsehsvytih-lipetsk.prihod.ru
- Address: st. Vodopyanova, 19. Transport stop “House of Artist”.
The church, consecrated in the name of All Saints in 2002, is rightly one of the most beautiful buildings in Lipetsk erected in modern times. It is interesting that the foundation of the temple was laid in a pit that was originally intended for the construction of the building of the district committee of the CPSU, but providence once again had its own way. A feature of the church’s exterior is the placement of a 49-meter bell tower within the volume of the main building. On sunny days, the glare cast by the nitrotitanium-coated domes creates an unusually beautiful halo around the temple.
