Taganrog, the city where Chekhov lived. I took the iPhone 11 and showed how it is now

Recently, our editor-in-chief Nikita Goryainov invited me to tell about Taganrog. This is the city in which I was born and live.

I decided that this was a good idea. You can show beautiful places and test the iPhone 11 cameras, mainly the ultra-wide-angle one.

Brief information

Taganrog is a small city in the Rostov region on the border with Ukraine. Now it is home to approximately 250 thousand people. According to this indicator, it is in second place in the region after Rostov-on-Don.

I decided to structure my walk in the following way: I’ll go straight from home to the most interesting places, and at the same time I’ll show city life.

I'll start with my area: Russian Field

A lot of information can fit into the lens of an ultra-wide-angle camera.

In some scenes, the ultra-wide-angle lens can replace Panorama.

The most densely populated area of the city. There are practically no private houses here, mostly high-rise buildings, I live in one of them.

The infrastructure is in perfect order: there is a small park, many shops, a market, schools, clinics, kindergartens, even auto repair shops. In this regard, there are no compromises on the Russian Field, unlike other areas.

All the old courtyards in Taganoga look something like this.

It is convenient that from here you can relatively quickly get to anywhere in the city.

Minibuses are the most popular public transport in Taganrog. It’s time to change or remove many of them, but no one is in a hurry to do this.

There are buses both modern and very old. There are very few bus routes in Taganrog, and no one wants to change this either.

There are slightly more trams than buses, but almost all are in very poor condition. For many residents, this is the main form of transport, because there are places where minibuses and buses do not go.

One trip by minibus costs 22 rubles, by bus and tram 20 rubles. They only accept cash and that's what irritates me the most. I almost always use Apple Pay for purchases, but this limitation means I have to carry my wallet with me.

There is Yandex.Taxi and Lucky. The latter is slightly cheaper than Yandex, but it has worse cars and an application, although after the appearance of Yandex Go I’m no longer sure about this.

Taganrog

Taganrog is located on the Mius Peninsula, which juts out into the Taganrog Bay of the Azov Sea, the old city center is located on Cape Tagany Rog, in addition, two rivers flow within the city: the Big Turtle and the Small Turtle. People don’t swim in these rivers because they are too shallow compared to the Sea of Azov.

The most popular beaches in the city of Taganrog are as follows:

  • Central Beach,
  • Sunny Beach,
  • Eliseevsky beach,
  • seaside beach,
  • Wild beach (nudist)

The entire coast of the Taganrog Bay is strewn with sand, the seabed is initially muddy, gradually turning into sand. It is believed that the mud is healing, and before plunging into the water, you can anoint and massage your body with it. Massaging the buttocks and thighs with mud is important for women - it helps get rid of cellulite and tighten the skin. The healing properties of sludge were studied during the Soviet era and began to be widely used in sanatoriums to treat various diseases: from respiratory to skin.

The beaches are located close to each other. Each beach is well-equipped: rental of jet skis, water skis, motor boats, the opportunity to ride a banana boat, windsurf, or go to an open-air water park.

Central Beach

Now the central beach is less popular than Sunny and Primorsky. But many vacationers continue to come here - after all, everyone chooses the most convenient vacation spot for themselves.

Beach infrastructure: toilet, changing rooms, cafe, place for active games, volleyball net. The beach is quite wide and sandy. You can drive almost to the sea itself by car.

The biggest disadvantage is that it is crowded.

You can get to Central Beach by minibuses No. 30, 60, 19, 74 to Italian Lane, along which you need to go down. By taxi from Peter the Great Square - about 70-80 rubles.

sunny Beach

The beach is located a stone's throw from Pushkinskaya Embankment and is the most popular. The legendary stone staircase leads to it. You can get to it from Peter the Great Square by minibuses No. 60, 19, 30.

The beach is located next to Primorsky. Unlike Central, there is an entertainment program every evening: discos, competitions, games for children. The advantages of this beach include a very convenient location near many of the city’s attractions and a well-equipped embankment, rental of catamarans and boats, places for active games, paid parking, locker rooms, and numerous cafes.

Cons: lack of toilets, in some places the shore is polluted with mud and garbage. Many vacationers prefer to relax here because of its convenient location. There are much more people here than in Central.

Eliseevsky Beach

Considered one of the best beaches in the city. You can get to it by minibuses No. 19, 30, 60. There is a water park next to the beach. In some places the beach has a fee. Pros: swimming pool for children, entertainment program (discos, competitions, concerts), the beach area is clean, algae is removed, cafes, snack bars, good toilets, showers, changing rooms, a billiards room nearby, the sea in this place is the deepest compared to other beaches .

But there are also some disadvantages: they forcefully offer to take a sun lounger for 100 rubles, and the entire beach area is dotted with them, even if you want to lie right on the sand, there is nowhere for children to play. Since the beach is considered the best, in the evening there are a lot of people here - there is a long line to the changing rooms and toilets.

For those who love fun and liveliness, this is a great option.

Seaside beach

There is a beach next to the Seaside Park, where you can have a picnic and then go down for a swim in the sea. There is a children's center with attractions, trampolines, and game rooms. You can get to it by trams No. 9, 8 (both go to the park itself), minibus No. 34 (to the park), No. 19 (to the stop "DK Kombaynostroiteley" and then just a short walk along the alley to the park). The beach is dotted with specially brought white sand, the bottom is sandy, there are changing rooms, trash cans, umbrellas, and toilets are only in the park. Here you can watch the flights of airplanes and helicopters; there is an aircraft factory nearby. Cafes here are quite expensive, so it is better to take food with you.

There are no water activities (banana boats, boats, windsurfing, etc.). For some, this is a big plus. In some places there are stones - sandstone. There is a pipe running under the water - you may not notice it and get injured, so it is better to ask vacationers in advance where it is located.

By the way, cellular reception here is poor. There are not so many people relaxing here, because the beach is designed for amateurs.

Wild Beach (nudist) If you don’t need loud evening discos, water parks, infrastructure, you want to relax in silence, and maybe even meditate, there is also a place for you away from the city noise - Wild Beach.

The beach near the children's multidisciplinary clinic is considered wild; it is located between the Central and Primorsky beaches. There are very few vacationers here, but they are here. This place is not improved, not cleaned, there is mud on the shore, and in the sea there are fields of algae - real wild nature. Here you will not find anything civilized: toilets, showers, locker rooms, trash cans (but don’t forget to take your garbage with you, no one will collect it here, and the planet will suffer from the rotting of bags, plastic and rubber).

Nudists often sunbathe here, i.e. you must understand where you are going on vacation; you should not conflict with people who, in your opinion, look indecent. There are more civilized beaches for you: Central, Eliseevsky, Primorsky.

There are many trees here, you can hide from the hot sun in their shade, there is a descent to the sea, there are no breakwaters, and almost no one is here during the day.

Relaxing in the cool of the trees, enjoying the sea air, you can watch hang gliders - quite a beautiful sight.

You can get to the place by minibus No. 19 (to the children's hospital and go downstairs).

Beaches near Taganrog

Beaches in Petrushino

Locals love to head to the nearby beaches outside of town. In the village of Petrushino there is a clean and well-maintained beach, not far from Central and Primorsky. There is a fairly large area of coastline dotted with sand. The beach where everyone usually goes is located “under the factory.” You can get here in 15 minutes from Aviator Square: you need to take a bus to Petrushino, ask the driver to stop near the plant and go down to the sea there. The water is much cleaner than in the city. In Petrushino there is another beach of the Strelka spit.

Beach in the village of Rozhok

It takes much longer to get here (about an hour), but some vacationers prefer this beach even to the Black Sea. It’s much deeper here, although the water is just as warm and clean, it’s remote from factories, but cellular communications are generally unavailable (it’s better to stay in Taganrog, and you can come here to rest in the morning and leave by the evening). You can get there by minibus, which will go to the village of Natalevka; you need to ask the driver to stop in Rozhka in advance. The minibus departs from the suburban station. Here several organized beaches are located close to each other. You can pitch a tent right by the sea and arrange car camping.

Seaside Park

The quality of small objects on the ultra-wide-angle camera leaves much to be desired.
But it will do for Instagram. The most beautiful and well-kept park. A large-scale reconstruction was recently completed, during which the Soviet asphalt was replaced with modern tiles, the stairs were updated, underground wiring was installed and much more.

Now it is a nice place to walk around. In the evening, especially on weekends, there are a lot of people. Perhaps this is the only negative, but not for everyone.

One interesting thing to note is an alley with anchors that were raised from the bottom of the Taganrog Bay.

If you go lower, you will find yourself on Primorsky Beach.

Tourists very rarely come to this beach; it is mainly popular among residents of the area.

For me, this is the worst beach in the city. There are no sun loungers, bars or playgrounds. The shore is terrible: a lot of rocks and breakwaters.

Therefore, it is better to turn around and take a walk through the renovated park.

One of the park's exits leads to the abandoned building of the Taganrog Automobile Plant.
Until 2014, Hyundai, Vortex and Tagaz cars were assembled here. On topic: I've been using iPhone 11 for six months. I found all the shortcomings

In 2014, the plant was declared bankrupt. For six years, the vast territory of TagAZ has been empty, all the buildings have been destroyed, the remains of the equipment are being sold for metal.

During Soviet times, this plant produced combine harvesters.

Taganrog leather factory from a bird's eye view - the collapse of a giant

At the end of May this year, news spread throughout the city... the tannery was on fire! People went outside and saw how a huge flame engulfed the building, its flashes could be seen for many kilometers. Firefighters extinguished the fire for several hours.

Residents wondered what was left of the once great tannery No. 1 after the fire. The answer to this question was provided by Denis Tretyakov by shooting with a quadcopter from a bird's eye view.

The Taganrog tannery was founded in 1853. The official launch took place in 1858. The first owner of the plant was Ya. M. Serebryakov. Since 1874, the plant was owned by I. A. Scaramanga. Leather production was done by hand in dark, cramped rooms. After the creation of the Azov Leather Production Partnership in 1895, construction of a new plant began. The main building, drying rooms, warehouses, and a mechanical workshop were built. Steam heating, sea water supply, and then electric lighting were installed. The Taganrog leather factory was famous for the quality of its products and was considered one of the largest in southern Russia. His products supplied not only our country, but were also exported to England, Turkey, and Greece. At the beginning of the 20th century it was nationalized and became known as leather factory No. 1.

In the 90s of the twentieth century, the Taganrog Tannery had production facilities for processing all types of raw hides. In the manufacture of products, imported and domestic equipment, modern technological processes and chemical materials are used. It has the ability to produce a wide range of products: thin elastic chrome, yuft, hard leather, saddle leather, rawhide, velor, blanks for leather goods, feed flour, hide glue and many others. etc. The company employed up to 1,500 people.

In September 2015, an attempt was made to recognize the production shops of the defunct tannery as an object of cultural heritage and included in the unified state register. An answer came from the Ministry of Culture that work would be organized “to establish the historical and cultural value of the object” with the aim of including it in the lists of cultural heritage sites, but... they didn’t succeed, they didn’t have time, it didn’t work out.

Recently, the plant has often suffered from arson, but the last severe fire that occurred on May 25, 2021, destroyed almost everything, putting an end to the century-long history of this great enterprise. The Notepad archive contains a video of the terrible event that destroyed the plant.

Previously, we reported that the Tannery in Taganrog caught fire.
On May 25, a fire occurred at the Tannery on Kontorskaya Street in Taganrog. News on Notepad-Taganrog

Petrovskaya and Gorky Park

Another shot with an ultra-wide-angle camera that can be posted on Instagram “as is.”
Petrovskaya Street is the main street in the city. This is where residents and tourists most often walk.

For everyone, Petrovskaya begins with Gorky Park, it is the largest in the city. A new playground was recently installed here and it looks good.

Sometimes the ultra-wide lens matches the main camera in all respects. There's no need to even comment here.

The main alley divides the park into two zones: on the right are all the attractions, theater and restaurants, and on the left there is nothing but numerous trees and paths.

The Ferris wheel is one of the objects that looks unusual thanks to its 120 degree angle.

Petrovskaya has everything: restaurants, bars, institutes, colleges, administration, government agencies and company offices. The street itself looks tolerable, but it cannot do without tin.

If you turn off Petrovskaya, you can see very old houses and courtyards.

Not far from Petrovskaya there is an embankment and a large staircase that leads to it. In three years she will turn 200 years old.

Stone staircase and Pushkinskaya embankment

One of the main attractions of the city is the Stone Staircase. Honestly, I don’t understand what’s unique about it. Except for the sea view.

However, tourists regularly take photos at the top of the stairs. Even to take the photo above, I had to wait several minutes.

Below is Pushkinskaya Embankment. Another popular place among both city residents and tourists.

There are almost no restaurants here, mostly mediocre nightclubs.

As with any coastal city, there are boat trips. A ticket for an adult costs 650 rubles.

At the very end of the embankment you can meet fishermen and sailing yachts. There are several schools in the city that teach kayaking, windsurfing and sailing.

Chekhov's places

In good conditions, the ultra-wide iPhone 11 produces excellent results.

Many Taganrozh residents are proud that Anton Chekhov was born and raised here. Every year, various events are held in his honor, from studying stories in schools to laying flowers at the monument, where would we be without it.

Tourists also regularly visit all places that are associated with Chekhov.

First of all, this is Chekhov's House, where he was born. Household items from the 19th century have been preserved inside.

Shot with an ultra-wide-angle camera. If you don't look at the details, everything is fine. But if you look closely, you can see fuzzy tiles and “soap” in the lower left corner.

Later, Chekhov and his parents moved to Gogolevsky Lane. His father had a grocery store there.

Now the Chekhov's Shop is both a museum and a store where, in addition to various souvenirs, they sell delicious tea.

An ultra-wide-angle camera comes in handy when you need to capture a large object from a short distance.

Opposite the Taganrog administration is the Chekhov Theater. His father was one of the theater's shareholders, and Chekhov himself regularly watched performances here. Later he staged his plays here.

The theater is still operating. His repertoire includes several plays and performances. Artists and directors come here regularly with their productions.

Fans of Chekhov should definitely visit Taganrog.
