Chushka and Tuzla braids

Several centuries ago, a sandbank appeared in the Kerch Strait due to strong storms that brought a lot of sand. Its length is 18 km. It owes its unusual name to the dolphins that threw themselves at it from the sea. The indigenous people called them “chushki”, that is, “pigs”. Today the spit is a popular holiday destination, famous for its sandy beaches. Here you can see how local fishermen catch fish, because many species come here to spawn.

Tuzla Spit used to adjoin the peninsula, but at the beginning of the 20th century it was partially swallowed up by the sea, resulting in an island. At the beginning of the new century, Tuzla was connected to the peninsula by an artificial dam.

Today it is an elongated spit, reaching 5 km and continuing to grow due to coastal sediments. The spit belongs to the Crimea in the west, and to the Krasnodar Territory in the east . There are no beaches in the city itself, but there is a seaport located at the mouth of the Kuban River. The Sea of ​​Azov lies 50 meters away. Its depth is relatively small, 1 meter. The composition of the mud is related to mineral gray-brown clays and is rich in boron, bromine and iodine. A temperate continental climate is observed in Temryuk with hot, dry summers and warm, but wet and windy winters.

Founding of Temryuk. Attraction - Phanagoria excavations

From 550 BC here was a Greek colony of the Hellenic Bosporan kingdom with its capital Panticapaeum. The second most important city in it was Phanagoria. Initially the settlement was called Agrippa. An interesting fact is that Phanagoria did not die from the invasion of enemies; it was absorbed by the Sea of ​​Azov as a result of rising water levels.

Its ruins, located near the village of Sennaya, were discovered only in the 19th century after the sea level dropped. The most valuable exhibits, ancient Greek amphorae and household items are still being found. Today Phanagoria is a landmark of Temryuk and the surrounding area.
