The prospect of moving for permanent residence to Novorossiysk in 2021 attracts many Russians. The reason for the seaside town's popularity will become clear the moment you visit it for the first time.

To find out the advantages and disadvantages of Novorossiysk, you should read reviews about it from those who have moved and those who have lived there for a long time. The opinions of those who came to Novorossiysk to relax will not hurt either.
Taking into account the points of view of many people, you can form your own judgment and understand whether it is worth choosing a city to move to, whether it will be comfortable to live and raise children in it.
General information about Novorossiysk
Novorossiysk is conveniently located on the shore of Tsemes Bay. This place was first appreciated by the Greeks. They organized the first settlement here, calling it Bati. This happened at the very beginning of our era.
The strategically attractive place was taken away from the Greek settlers by the nomadic Alans. They, in turn, were pushed out by the Turks, who founded the Sujuk-Kale fortress here.
The Russians, who had been fighting the Turks for centuries, in 1838 organized a military administration on the shore of Tsemes Bay.
In the 18th century, Russia built its fortifications here. The settlement of Novorossiya was formed around them. In 1839, it received the name it still bears today – Novorossiysk.
Soon it was established as a city, which later became the center of the Black Sea province. But before that, during the Crimean War, it was destroyed and then rebuilt.
In 1882, the first cement plant was launched here. A little later, in 1888, a railway was built. These are precisely the factors that formed today's Novorossiysk - a developed industrial and resort city with modern infrastructure.
From the pre-revolutionary history of Novorossiysk
The city was founded on September 12, 1838 as a base for the Black Sea Fleet; the name “Novorossiysk” appeared a little later, in the winter of 1839
Tsemes Bay was important for naval forces, so the development of the settlement proceeded by leaps and bounds. At the end of the thirties, this is a camp on the ruins of an old Turkish fortress; ten years later - a full-fledged city
Another five years - and again a pile of ruins: in 1855, during the Crimean War, Novorossiysk was bombed by an Anglo-French squadron. The defenders of the city managed not only to push back the enemy landing force, but also to drive the ships out of the bay, but after the enemy captured the Kerch Strait, Novorossiysk still had to be abandoned.
After the war it was rebuilt. The city experienced a new birth during the era of the industrial revolution of the second half of the 19th century: the railway came here, transshipment points for the oil industry emerged, and most importantly, in the mountains near Novorossiysk, huge and high-quality deposits of raw materials for the production of “gray gold” - cement were discovered. Until now, cement is one of the important components of the city’s economy.
But practically no ancient buildings have survived in Novorossiysk. The Great Patriotic War took away a lot, and a lot fell victim to post-war reconstruction and redevelopment. The process has not stopped to this day, the more valuable each structure becomes. The so-called City House (1908), the Lutheran Church (1908), the mansion of the tobacco magnate A. Jukelis (1913) and the oldest stone building in the city - the house of the merchant S. Obradovic, built in 1869 - stand out. Already by the beginning of the 20th century, the building was considered a local landmark and one of the best civil buildings, appearing on many postcards of the turn of the century. Before the revolutionary events, the building housed the Novorossiysk branch of the Azov-Don Commercial Bank, the third most important in Russia.
Separately, I would like to note the current cathedral church of Novorossiysk, and before the revolution, the modest cemetery church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its construction began in 1899, then for a long time they could not find money, so construction was completed only in 1904. The church became a cathedral after the liquidation of other city churches. It itself was closed in the 1930s; it was reopened in 1942, but soon a tragic event occurred - during an Easter service, the church was hit by an artillery shell, which literally destroyed the building. The first time it was restored after the war, the second time - at the beginning of the two thousandth; shortly after the completion of this last renovation, in 2011, the temple... burned down. The severe fire occurred due to faulty electrical wiring. The fire destroyed ancient icons, liturgical books, and interior decoration. However, thanks to the help of caring people, the temple was restored from the ashes quite quickly.
Speaking about Novorossiysk, one cannot fail to mention the natural “attraction” (dubious, from the point of view of many local residents) – Nord-Ost. A cold winter wind, passing over the mountains, hits the bay and the city, raising billions of instantly freezing water drops. On old postcards we see literally the catastrophic consequences of the Nord East. In 1849, the wind blew for 48 days (!), killing 57 people. In 1899, something unprecedented happened - Tsemes Bay froze. Already in our time, in 2001, almost the entire coast was declared a natural disaster zone.
Climatic features of Novorossiysk
There are not many cities in the Russian Federation with a temperate subtropical climate. Novorossiysk is one of them. Even in winter, the temperature here rarely drops below 0.
On average, the lowest temperatures are observed here in January – up to +2.3°C. The hottest month is July, the average temperature is +23.7°C. During the daytime, the air often warms up to +40°C.
Sea temperature
The temperature of sea water in the winter months does not fall below +7°C. Beach lovers also swim in winter. In summer the water warms up to +28°C.

Beginning in August, seaspouts can often be seen here. Some of them also go ashore. A little later, from September, Nord-Ost dominates the city and its environs; the wind causes discomfort to people until May. Sometimes its speed reaches 105 km per hour.
Ecology
You can learn about the unfavorable ecology of Novorossiysk not only from reviews. For many years, cement factories have been releasing tons of dust into the region's atmosphere, polluting it.
The authorities obliged enterprises to install nano-filters. That was what was done, but the situation did not save. The characteristic white dust can be seen everywhere. It is especially noticeable in the eastern part of the city, where it covers the road, houses, trees and other objects.
Another unfavorable factor for the environment is the largest Russian port. Dump trucks from all over the country come to this important transport hub.

Smog caused by exhaust fumes has become a normal phenomenon for the populated area.
Novorossiysk seaport is the largest port in Russia and the fifth port in Europe in terms of cargo turnover. Photo: Vitaliy Timkiv / flickr.com
The environmental situation is especially depressing in the summer, when the asphalt in Novorossiysk melts from the heat. Numerous oil bases further aggravate the situation.
There is a lot of greenery in Novorossiysk, but it is not able to protect it from harmful fumes. The wind doesn't help the situation either.
The city is recognized as taking 46th place in the ecology list. And according to this indicator, in 2021 it is no different from other settlements in the central part of Russia. It’s not worth coming here for fresh sea air.

Temporary population forecast
Since Novorossiysk is positioned in the future not only as a large transport and industrial center, but also as one of the recreational centers of the Black Sea coast, an important point in determining the project population is to take into account the temporary population (recreational residents temporarily staying in the project area).
The temporary population is in turn divided into:
- organized (vacationers in sanatorium-resort institutions);
- unorganized (amateur vacationers and temporary service personnel living in the “private sector”);
- short-term (this category represents vacationers, usually excursionists, making excursion routes and visiting attractions, for a period of one or several days without accommodation in resort institutions and the residential sector of settlements).
The master plan carried out calculations and determined project indicators for the one-time number of temporary organized and unorganized population for the estimated period until 2030.
Design of the numerical temporary population of the Novorossiysk urban district for the estimated period until 2030.

If we move away from official data and switch to reviews, many note the affordability of buying a home.
The city administration is determined to increase the population. Visitors are welcome here, especially those who are ready, together with local residents, to boost the economy of the locality and do everything to improve the quality of life in it.
A healthy lifestyle is actively promoted. The city has many sports and training grounds, bicycles and scooters for rent.

Climate and weather
Mountain peaks reliably protect the city of Novorossiysk from continental air masses and create a special microclimate here. According to its characteristics, it is close to the Mediterranean. In summer the weather is tropical and in winter the climate is temperate. The summer season here is characterized by warm weather (average temperature is plus 22 degrees) with little precipitation. It lasts from the end of May to the end of September. In winter, such a natural phenomenon as boron or north-east winds is often observed. They bring a sharp drop in temperature and unusually thick fogs. The winter season lasts from December to February.
Criminal situation
No matter where in the world you go, to live or vacation, it is important to find out what the crime rate is in the city of your choice. Novorossiysk cannot be called prosperous in this regard.
This is one of the places in the Russian Federation where more crimes are committed than in the capital. Main problems:
- drug trafficking;
- arms trade;
- burglary;
- real estate.
The latter should be taken into account if you are going to buy a house, apartment or land. “Black” realtors operate on a par with normal licensed realtors.
You should check the availability of the necessary constituent documents and monitor the company's reputation.
The fight against crime has been quite successful in recent years. However, the city still cannot be considered prosperous.
To the land of vineyards
One of the most famous places in the immediate vicinity of Novorossiysk is, of course, Abrau-Durso with its famous champagne wines. Winemaking is a traditional trade of the Black Sea region; specifically, the Abrau-Durso brand appeared thanks to Emperor Alexander II, who ordered the development of an estate near Lake Abrau and the Durso River for the royal family. And the real boom in champagne production is associated with the famous Russian winemaker, Prince L. S. Golitsyn. In 1891, he took over the royal inheritance, and a couple of years later the first batch of champagne was released, which later became legendary.
Before the revolution, sparkling wines were supplied only to the imperial court and the highest nobility. Famous French experts were invited to Abrau. Champagne made its way to the people in 1920, when a socialist farm, the Abrau-Durso state farm, arose in place of the tsarist farm. It was headed by A. M. Frolov-Bagreev, the famous Soviet winemaker, continuer of traditions and founder of the reservoir method of producing sparkling wines.
The town is surrounded by vineyards scattered across the mountains. Champagne at the factory is prepared in a closed cycle, from bunch to bottle
Much attention is paid to the maturation process: the tunnels where all this happens stretch for more than five kilometers. Products are produced both using traditional technologies - this is more expensive - and using an accelerated method designed for mass production
Without a doubt, now Abrau-Durso is the most famous brand of domestic champagne.
And the village itself is a wonderful place to relax. Actually, there is no sea beach here - to get to the coast, you need to travel several kilometers along a mountain serpentine road; but this is more than compensated by the magnificent Lake Abrau with clean, amazing turquoise-colored water. Here they swim, fish, and boat... The lake is not that deep - up to 11 meters, and the average depth is less than 6 meters; however, from Turkic “Abrau” is translated as “failure”... Lovers of romance are told a legend about how this failure was formed. Once upon a time there lived a rich family in the mountains, boasting of their wealth. Only one girl from this family was not distinguished by unbridled greed; on the contrary, she loved a simple village youth and met him secretly from her relatives. It was during one of these secret meetings that everything happened: the defiant behavior of the rich people overflowed God’s patience, and he rained lightning on their village, throwing everyone underground. When the girl returned and saw a large lake instead of a house, out of horror and hopelessness she threw herself into it... but the water did not accept the beauty. Right across the surface of the lake she was transported to the other shore - into the arms of her lover. This is such a happy ending, unexpected for romantic legends.
Do I need to clarify that this mythical heroine’s name was Abrau?
Reviews from those who moved to Novorossiysk
Lera moved to Novorossiysk in 2021.
I like Novorossiysk. I didn’t notice any dust from the cement plant. Where is she not? The environment in any city is not very good. Of course it’s hot in the summer, but it’s better than the cold of 9 months. The people are friendly. I don’t like that trees are being cut down and everything is being built up with high-rise buildings. The quality of housing is poor and prices are very high.
Vladimir moved from Saratov.
One of the biggest disadvantages is the problem with water. Especially in the southern region. If the developer promises you that there will be water for 24 hours, do not believe it. This problem is unlikely to be solved in the coming years. Hospitals, schools, kindergartens are overcrowded, built in the USSR. They only build houses. Ideal if you work remotely. Salaries here are small.
Sergey moved from St. Petersburg.
I've been living here for 6 years. There are problems, but everything can be solved if you find a normal job. The quality of the products is better and the prices are lower than in St. Petersburg. Nature is beautiful. Warm. The beaches are of course crowded in summer and public transport is old.
Oksana moved from Ufa.
We live in the Southern region with 2 children. We drive our children to school through traffic jams; there are not enough schools. The clinic has long queues and constant problems with water. We want to return to our homeland.
Lyudmila moved from Vladivostok.
We live in the Primorsky district. We have the 1st floor, column. There is always water. We buy vegetables and meat only at the market. Prices are the same as everywhere else in chain stores. We go to a sanatorium in Anapa. In winter, you can get treatment for 15,000 rubles. We really like the city and don’t regret moving. The people are friendly.
Ecology of the city
Like many southern settlements, the city of Novorossiysk generally has a poor environmental situation. The state of the city is influenced by the amount of transport and industrial emissions. The most disadvantaged area of the city is the Eastern one, with almost constant smog due to numerous operating industrial enterprises. The most prosperous region is the Southern region, where there are no production organizations at all. The problem for the entire city is the large amount of transport. Novorossiysk does not have the opportunity to pass moving streams away from residential areas, and gas pollution here is very high. Another environmental problem is the seasonal increase in the population, which leads to the fact that in the summer the city cannot cope with the increasing amount of garbage.
Power of the Soviets
The beginning of the 20th century marked revolutionary sentiments in society. In industrial cities, revolutionary movements were especially active. Everyone took part in the strikes - from a longshoreman to an “advanced” high school student. Novorossiysk did not escape unrest either - it became one of the first cities in which Soviet power was established. The Novorossiysk Republic was proclaimed in the city. True, its life was short-lived - two weeks later, after punitive detachments arrived in the city, the Soviets dissolved themselves.
Demonstration in Novorossiysk. December 1905.
After these events, power in the city changed frequently - either passed into the hands of the Bolsheviks, or to the commander of the Volunteer Army. As a result, after much hesitation, Soviet power was finally established in the city.
When is it celebrated?
Novorossiysk City Day falls on September 12 every year. This is the date when its founders landed on the shore of the bay.
Figure 1. Festive performance
However, due to the fact that the date usually falls on weekdays, holiday events are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month and the following Sunday. In 2021 it will be September 14-15.

Figure 2. Fireworks on City Day
Festive events are varied. They start on Saturday and continue on Sunday until lunchtime. On Saturday evenings after sunset there are colorful fireworks displays.
The parade of freshmen and first-graders is traditional. The program is different every year, but it always includes concerts and exhibitions dedicated to the history and modernity of the settlement. National diasporas organize performances of national ensembles. In addition to Russians, quite large communities of Armenians, Ukrainians, Greeks and other nationalities live here.
The organizers pay attention to entertainment events for both adults and children, as well as sports competitions.
