“Norilsk is the Siberian Eldorado?”: truth and lies about life in the Arctic Circle

Where is Norilsk located?

Norilsk is the administrative center of the Norilsk urban district, a city located in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, in the north of the region south of the Taimyr Peninsula.
The approximate distance to the Yenisei is 90 km to the east. Norilsk is the northernmost city in the world and has the status of a city of regional subordination, the territory of which is surrounded on all sides by the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets region. The approximate population is 179 thousand people. The total area of the territory is 23 square kilometers. The climate in the city is subarctic and harsh: winters are long and cold, summers are short. The annual precipitation rate is 341 mm. Average annual air humidity is 76%. Norilsk is one of the most environmentally polluted cities in the world. The city is the world's largest nickel producer. There are a large number of factories here. The poor ecology in the city is due to the fact that there is a large amount of emissions from local enterprises. The city's wastewater treatment plants are also in poor condition and cannot provide complete water purification. Norilsk is often saturated with smog, which makes it difficult for local residents to see the sun in the sky due to the smoke. The content of pollutants in the atmosphere is 5 times higher than the maximum limit.

The time zone of the city of Norilsk is MSK+4, the offset relative to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is +7.

“There are no random people here”

There are two ways to get to Norilsk - by plane and by ship. The latter method only works in summer, but you can get there by plane all year round. There is no fixed price for tickets. You can fly from Krasnoyarsk in the low season for about 11 thousand rubles. As Norilsk residents say, almost the entire city flies away in May and returns in August. During these weeks, the cost can reach 30 and 40 thousand per ticket.

The prices for the ship are still vague: a first-class cabin will cost 23 thousand rubles plus 55 rubles per kilogram of luggage. The ship goes from Krasnoyarsk to Dudinka, and from there you need to go another 90 km to Norilsk. Usually, large cargo is transported along the river; the Norilsk people themselves even deliver cars “from the mainland” this way.

There are practically no people who want to move to Norilsk “just like that.” Mostly people come here for work. High salaries at large industrial enterprises are what attracts people here. At the same time, the population in Norilsk is only growing every year, despite the regional downward trend. According to the census in 2000, 140 thousand people lived in Norilsk, and in 2019 the population was 181,656 people.

“There are no random people here. In Norilsk you won’t meet someone “passing through,” so even among the homeless, for example, you can always find some reasons and connections that brought them to Norilsk and decided their fate,” they say here.

It's no secret that people go to Norilsk to work. High salaries, long vacations, social guarantees and bonuses attract labor. Norilsk is like the Siberian Eldorado: it seems that you can really get rich here.
People “from the mainland” are surprised at both the earnings and compensation of Norilsk residents, especially those who work in metallurgy. Thus, each employee of the enterprise is entitled to several tens of thousands of rubles in reimbursement of travel expenses throughout Russia. Many are given discounted vouchers to good sanatoriums - to Belokurikha, Sochi and the like. The employee only needs to deposit about 10-15 thousand rubles. And this is only a small part of the bonuses. But you have to pay for them not only with work.

Norilsk Airport

There is an airport of federal significance in Norilsk. Type of airfield: jointly based: military aviation is based here along with civil aircraft. The distance from the city center to the airport is 36 km towards the west. The airport is open every day from 23:00 to 10:00. Norilsk Airport is the only connection between the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and other regions of the Russian Federation.

The airport serves aircraft of major Russian airlines: S7 Airlines, KrasAvia, NordStar. Popular destinations of regular flights: Krasnoyarsk, Ufa, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Novosibirsk. The annual passenger traffic is more than 500 thousand people.

Cabbage 300 per kg

A separate expense item in Norilsk is food and supplies. Of course, delivering food to the north is not so easy: the city does not have the regional and federal networks familiar to Krasnoyarsk residents - neither Komandor nor Okey. In general, when you go to stores in the region, you don’t expect much: the assortment is designed for the unpretentious and practical buyer from a small town or village. But in Norilsk everything is different: here people do not feel like a province and do not lag behind the capital cities. Therefore, the choice in ordinary Norilsk supermarkets will please even the pickiest guest.

Food prices are, of course, higher than in Krasnoyarsk, but not four times, as many say, and some things cost the same. For example, a liter of Semenishna milk costs 80-90 rubles, a dozen eggs can be found for 70-80 rubles. Chicken is a little expensive - you need to pay 460 rubles for a kilogram of chilled chicken thigh, but frozen products are much cheaper. Apples, bananas, tomatoes cost 150-200 rubles per kg, but some prices, of course, are amazing: for example, for a kilogram of young cabbage they ask for 300 rubles, for grapes - 450 rubles.

At the same time, lovers of northern delicacies always have something to eat in this city. Hunting and fishing are developed at an industrial level, so you can always buy the freshest fish, venison, game, etc. without any problems.

What is Norilsk famous for?

  • On Leninsky Prospekt there is a sculpture “Deer”, made of concrete chips with branched antlers. The monument personifies the grandeur and grace of the north.
  • In the city there is an architectural monument “The First House of Norilsk”, which was built in 1921 from thousands of logs. Today, inside the house there is an exhibition of personal belongings, geodetic equipment and photographs that were used by members of the expedition under the leadership of geologist Nikolai Urvantsev.
  • Near Mount Schmidt there is the Norilsk Calvary - a monument dedicated to the prisoners of the Norilsk camps. In memory of the soldiers killed in Afghanistan, the Black Tulip memorial was erected in the city. The author of the project is Larisa Shaidullina.
