Region codes on license plates in 2022

Good afternoon, dear reader.

In this article we will talk about state registration plates (car license plates) . The numbers are assigned to the car during its registration with the traffic police and remain in place until one of the next owners decides to replace them, or the car’s registration is terminated.

Registration marks are unique, i.e. Two different cars cannot have the same number plates at the same time. The numbers always differ by at least one letter or number. Today we will look at the features and procedure for issuing license plates, as well as automobile region codes on the license plates.

The procedure for issuing license plates in Russia

Let's consider the most common type of numbers in the Russian Federation:

These are the numbers that are installed on most cars.

At first glance, the number consists of a random sequence of letters and numbers. In fact, not everything is so simple here.

All numbers from 0 to 9 are used on license plates. However, unlike numbers, not all letters of the Russian alphabet can appear on license plates. This privilege is given only to those letters that have similar spellings in the Latin alphabet. Those. Only the letters A, B, E, K, M, N, O, R, S, T, U, X can be used on license plates.

You might have learned about this fact before, but the next thought will probably seem interesting to you. We will talk about the order in which the numbers are issued .

Numbers are issued in order (except for special series). However, the order in which the characters change in the number is far from normal perception. The symbols change not from right to left, but in a slightly different way - in a rather confusing sequence.

1. Most often, the third digit in the license plate changes (in the figure it is number 6). After the number T356OK the number T357OK will be issued.

2. The second most frequently changing character is the 2nd digit (in Figure 5). After the number T359OK the number T360OK will be issued.

3. The third most common symbol is the 1st digit (in Figure 3). After the number T399OK the number T400OK will be issued.

The numbers seem to be okay, but the same cannot be said about the letters.

4. The fourth most common symbol is the 1st letter (T in the picture). After the number T999OK the number U001OK will be issued.

5. The fifth most common symbol is the 3rd letter (K in the picture). After the number X999OK the number A001OM will be issued.

6. The sixth most common symbol is the 2nd letter (O in the picture). After the number X999OX the number A001PA will be issued.

The procedure is quite complicated, so if you didn’t understand it the first time, re-read points 1-6 again.

The symbols on the left side of the registration plate, which were discussed above, are responsible for vehicle numbers within a specific region. By the way, I inform statistics lovers that no more than 1 million 726 thousand 272 car registration plates can be issued with one region code.

After this limit is exhausted, the number of the Russian region written on the right side of the number changes. From this moment on, numbers begin to be issued again within the new region. Each subject of the Russian Federation has its own code, and some subjects of the federation, which have a very large number of cars, are assigned several region codes at the same time.

The region is...

Directly translated from Latin, “regio” is a region, a country . The concept of “region” is interpreted a little more broadly - it is a territory (land and (or) water), which can be conditionally differentiated (how is that?) from other territories according to some criteria.

Criteria by which territories can be divided into regions:

  1. geographical;
  2. political;
  3. socio-economic;
  4. administrative-territorial, etc.

The interpretation of the term “region” depends on the aspect (how is this?) in relation to which the interpretation is being made. Next, let’s take a closer look at the concept of “region” in different contexts.

Geographical regions

A region in geography is a part of the surface of planet Earth and the airspace above it with a common territory, flora and fauna, and population.

In geographical terms, the Earth is usually divided into several world regions (as in the diagram below). This does not take into account the socio-political division of the world community into states.

The UN (United Nations) has approved the following classification of regions on the world map:

From this classification it follows that the world is divided into 23 macroregions :

  1. Europe (Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western);
  2. Asia (North, South, Central, East, South-East, West);
  3. Africa (North, South, Central, Eastern, Western);
  4. America (North, South, Central, Caribbean);
  5. Australia and Oceania (Australia and New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia).

Such a classification is necessary for the convenience of international relations in economics, politics and science.

Administrative-territorial regions

In administrative terms, a region is an administrative unit of a state.

The division into regions is especially important for countries that occupy large territories (for example, Russia). But even in relatively small states, such division is carried out in order to optimize economic management .

For example, Great Britain (an area of about 130.5 thousand sq. km) is divided into 9 administrative regions, each of which is also divided into several counties.

A region as a unit of administrative division of a state has the following characteristics :

  1. geographical unity (part of the region cannot be on the Black Sea coast, and part on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk) is a sign of integrity;
  2. the predominance of certain types of activities of the population (for example, the Krasnodar Territory is an agricultural region, the Kamchatka region is a fishing region);
  3. unity of culture and ethnicity (what is this?).
    As a rule, the region is mainly populated by people of the same religion, with common cultural roots. Note: in recent decades, due to the increase in migration (how is that?) of the population, this feature (unity of culture and ethnic group) is becoming less and less relevant;
  4. unity of use of natural, raw materials, transport and labor resources (how is that?);
  5. unity of economic management is a sign of controllability.

The first name of the region is Ostyak-Vogul National District.

Region 89 registration plates

To streamline and record Russian cars, it was decided to introduce registration plates. These are special standardized signs, their appearance is determined by GOST. Combinations on them are designated according to the principle: three numbers and three letters. In this case, letters indicate the serial number, and numbers indicate the license plate itself. The letters used are Latin. The license plate of the owner of a Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug vehicle looks standard.

In the lower right corner of the license plate there is a flag of the Russian Federation, as well as the letter combination RUS. In the upper right corner, above the flag and letter combination, there is the number 89, indicating the subject code. In this case, the letters and numbers of the code are slightly smaller than the font of the main numbers of the license plate.

In winter, during frosts, in the region 89-Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, many roads are formed through rivers and lakes. These roads are called winter roads. Winter roads are used by all transport, since winter lasts a long time in Yamal and winter roads last a long time.

What number does the Moscow region have?

In the Russian Constitution, in Article 65, all regions of the country are listed. Traditionally, this sequence was used as the official number of regions, including when choosing automobile codes.

What number does the Moscow region have in the Constitution ? For a long time, the capital was in 77th place, which was fixed in many car license plates registered here. But when Crimea and Sevastopol were included in Article 65, Moscow moved to 78th position , where it remains today. But it was number 77 that remained as one of the capital’s automobile codes; 78 did not appear among them.

And I would like to add one more thing on my own about the question of what region Moscow is. It is too densely populated by people from completely different places . And they come here more often from where they live quite poorly. It is noisy and bustling here, but there is almost everything.

What region is Moscow

Moscow , our capital, is a city so large and significant that it is recognized as an independent region of Russia.

Only three cities in the Russian Federation are separate regions, the second and third are Sevastopol and St. Petersburg. The so-called cities of federal significance.

More than 12 million people live in Moscow - this is not even close to anywhere else in our country. The city is so huge and self-sufficient that residents have long jokingly asked the question “is there life beyond the Moscow Ring Road?”, speaking, of course, about the city’s ring road. Apparently, to clarify this issue a little, the authorities in 2011–12 annexed the outskirts of Moscow, thanks to which the city increased by almost 2.4 times! The area of the capital has never expanded so seriously and quickly before. This raised Moscow to 6th place in the ranking of the largest cities in the world by area , and the Moscow region included a whole list of cities, villages and even farmsteads.
