Novocheboksarsk is located in a zone of sharply continental climate. This means that summers are moderately hot and slightly rainy, and winters are snowy and moderately cold. The mild climate of this area contributed to the development of agriculture and various types of industrial activities. Initially, the city was planned as one of the main industrial centers of the Volga region. But over time, its meaning has changed a little. Today Novocheboksarsk is the second largest and most populous city in the republic. But this did not diminish its cultural value. Today there are more than 20 cultural institutions in the city. And in the center of all this cultural life is the Khimik Palace of Culture, which can accommodate about 1,000 spectators. The city also has music and art schools, 2 Orthodox churches, 2 theaters, 2 museums and 9 libraries.
Despite the fact that the city is mainly industrial, it has a large number of parks and green spaces. Local residents call Elnikovskaya Grove a generally recognized place for rest and relaxation. And, it is worth noting that it is not just a park or square, but a natural monument of Republican significance. This is definitely a place that guests of the city should definitely visit.
If you want to thoroughly study the historical past and modern life of the city, welcome to the museums of Novocheboksarsk. They will present you with rich collections on ethnology, art, handicrafts, and archaeological expeditions. Traditionally, such attractions are located in the center.
At the same time, open thematic museums can often be found in countryside areas. They offer visitors to see fascinating exhibitions dedicated to national life and folk crafts. In addition, it could be a museum reconstruction of historical cities or military fortresses. Similar attractions of Novocheboksarsk will be interesting for children.
In the pine forest opposite the Chuvashia sanatorium, an ethnographic corner “Suvar” was created, where the local landmark “tree of love” is located. As the legend says, a tree can bewitch a loved one and make any wish come true.

The beginning of the settlement of this region dates back to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds. Novocheboksarsk itself is quite young - it was founded in 1960 as a workers’ village at a chemical plant. Over time, it grew and absorbed the surrounding villages. Already in 1965, Novocheboksarsk received the status of a city of republican subordination. Currently it is the second largest city in the Republic of Chuvashia.
Attractions
There are two museums in the city - the Art Museum and the Museum of the History of Novocheboksarsk . Temple architecture is represented by St. Vladimir's Cathedral , built at the end of the 20th century. The city has quite a large number of monuments. Novocheboksarsk and its attractions - Sutochno.ru
Novocheboksarsk is located in the Chuvash Republic, a short distance from the capital of the Chuvash Republic, Cheboksary. The distance is only twenty kilometers. Therefore, when visiting Novocheboksarsk, you get a unique opportunity to take a sightseeing tour to the nearby capital of the republic. Before arriving, take care of choosing a place for temporary accommodation. This will save you time searching for temporary housing once you are in the city.
The newly built city has deep roots that go back to the Stone Age. Then the Novocheboksarsky lands were inhabited by the distant ancestors of modern settlers, living, studying and working on the banks of the Tsivil River. Scientists note that thousands of years BC, the winding river also witnessed life existing around it. In itself it represents artistic uniqueness. Civil with evenly outlined banks seems to be wandering along the Novocheboksarsk land.
The city is growing dynamically due to many factors. The most important of them is the development of production at the chemical plant.
Many cinemas and theaters have been built in Novocheboksarsk. Of particular interest is the “Rain” mime theater, whose history dates back to ancient Greek art. At that time, theater actors, or mimes, imitated phenomena of reality, using exclusively changes in facial expressions.
Another important attraction of Novocheboksarsk is the Art Museum, which displays works by such artists as A. Panteleev, A. Gritsay, G. Nissky, E. Kalnyshev, A. Kolchanov and many others.
You can take a walk in the city in the Elnikovskaya Grove Park of Culture and Recreation, where you can enjoy clean air and well-groomed paths. Despite its youth, the city is replete with a number of monuments. For example, an armored personnel carrier, as evidence of the war experienced in the mid-twentieth century. Monument to internationalist soldiers who took part in local conflicts. On Cathedral Square, a favorite walking place for local residents (apparently, the name justifies itself), in front of the multi-domed patterned church stands a monument to the Baptist of Rus', Prince Vladimir. You can also take a walk there, next to the square. The monument in honor of the 13 villages that became part of Novocheboksarsk is unusual. It is a fountain, the waters of which wash the names of the villages carved on it. Perhaps, while walking around Novocheboksarsk, you will want to stay a couple more days.
Have a sunny trip!

To Cheboksary via Kanash
Not far from Cheboksary there is a large transport hub - the city of Kanash. There are many more trains going there and from more cities, so if you don’t see convenient direct routes to the capital of Chuvashia, feel free to look at Kanash. From Kazan, for example, you can get to it in just two hours. Next, choose which one will be more convenient for you: buses, trains and electric trains go from Kanash to Cheboksary. The distance between cities is less than 80 km.
By plane.
Direct flights to Cheboksary operate from Moscow and St. Petersburg. The flight will take approximately 1.5 hours. The airport is located just five kilometers from the city center, so you can easily reach the main attractions in 45 minutes. Public transport runs every 15 minutes, look for bus stops No. 15 or trolleybuses No. 2, 9 and 15.
By car.
The road from Moscow will take 673 km - this is about eight hours of travel without stopping at other cities (but why then go by car if there is no stopping?). From St. Petersburg - 1385 km (18 hours travel). From Kazan - 158 km (two hours travel).
Interesting places Cheboksary
In Cheboksary, on the high bank of the Volga River, lies the beautiful Republican Victory Memorial Park, which is very popular among guests and residents of the city. Its area is quite large - 30 hectares, on which there are many attractions and equipped places for recreation. Here is the Eternal Flame for those killed in the Great Patriotic War, the Monument of Military Glory, various monuments to the brave internationalist soldiers who died in Chechnya, as well as the liquidators of the terrible accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, a museum of military equipment, the Chapel of St. John, a memory lane, a cascading fountain and an alley heroes. The park is beautiful at any time of the year, as it was made “with love.”
What to see in Cheboksary in one day
First, let's go through the classic sights, without seeing which, consider that you have never been to Cheboksary at all.

Scientific and Technical Museum of Tractor History
- Opening hours: on weekdays from 8:00 to 18:00, on weekends - from 10:00 to 17:00.
- Ticket price: 150 rub. per adult, 75 rub. — students and senior citizens, 50 rubles. — schoolchildren, 25 rubles. - preschoolers.
- Cost of an individual excursion: 350 rubles.
This attraction is located away from the others on the list and is closest to the train station and airport, so let’s start with it. Three facts about the museum: it is non-state, it is the only one of its kind, it has a unique exhibition of tractors from all over the world. There are more than 50 rare specimens alone, and there are more than 5,000 exhibits in total.
In the museum you will get acquainted with the history of the development of agricultural implements and the evolution of tractors, look at the legends of tractor construction (there is even a Fordson of the 20s here!), study the interiors of forges of the century before and last century and much more interesting things.

Cheboksary Bay
First of all, the bay has a very interesting history. It was created in the late 80s of the last century, and before this place was the historical center of the city with the main attractions, merchant houses, pre-revolutionary architecture - in a word, the heart of the city... But they decided to sink it for the construction of the Cheboksary hydroelectric station.
The historical center has sunk to the bottom, but the place remains the main one in the city: new attractions are being built along the shores of the bay, hotels are being built, cafes and restaurants are opening, new pedestrian bridges and streets are being laid. This is literally a hotspot for locals and tourists! Our special love is the light bridge across the bay; it is pedestrian, so don’t deny yourself the pleasure of taking a walk in the evening.
They were able to preserve some things, for example, the Holy Trinity Monastery from the time of Ivan the Terrible, the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God, and the Vvedensky Cathedral. Take a look inside or admire it from the other side of the bay.
Monument to the Patroness Mother of the Chuvash people
The 46-meter-tall creation of sculptor Vladimir Nagornov was erected according to the idea of the President of the Republic N.V. Fedorov in 2003. In his speech, the president emphasized that there are many similar monuments in the world dedicated to the Motherland, gods or great people, but only this monument is dedicated to the mother.
The monument really looks impressive and even achingly touching - a giant woman in a national Chuvash costume spread her arms and opened her arms to everyone who is ready to accept them.
The patroness mother stands on the shore of the bay, you can’t pass by in any case, but we recommend stopping, looking at it, and reading the inscription below (“Blessed are my children who live in peace and love”).
St. Herzen, 25
River port
An offer that is only relevant for the summer season, but it is impossible not to mention it: on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays here you can take a boat ride along the Volga walking routes. Of course, we don’t recommend postponing your trip for this, but visiting the city again in the summer is a good idea!
Boulevard of Merchant Efremov
Merchant Efremov Boulevard, also known as the pedestrian tourist street, preserved from the “pre-GESS times”, also known as the Cheboksary Arbat. We come here to admire the architecture and unusual monuments (Ostap Bender and Kisa Vorobyaninov are already waiting for you), look into local small museums (for example, the beer museum), try local cuisine in atmospheric restaurants - more on this below!
Ethnocultural Park "Suvar"
- How to get there: buses 204 and 333 (about 2 hours on the road), in the summer - by boat.
- For information about the excursion and a guide, go to the main entrance of the sanatorium.
Technically, the park is located outside the city limits, but it is absolutely impossible to miss it when exploring Cheboksary. It is here, on the left bank of the Volga, in the village of Sosnovka, that you will get acquainted with Chuvash history and mythology.
On the territory of Suvar there are more than 130 wooden sculptures embodying the heroes of mythology - gods, people and spirits. Wood was not chosen as the main material by chance: the ancient Chuvash believed that their soul lived in the bark of the tree after death.
The park is divided into three zones:
1. Golden mountain with figures of gods. 2. Silver mountain with figures of people. 3. Copper mountain with figures of spirits.
It will be difficult to figure everything out on your own, so if you want to immerse yourself in history, take a tour. On Sundays, by the way, it is free (starts at 10:00).

Architectural ensemble
Perhaps every tourist who has visited the city has a photo of the Novocheboksarsk landmark; we are talking about Cathedral Square and the architectural ensemble located on it.
In addition to the temple, the Cathedral Square includes:
- Sculpture of Prince Vladimir. It is made of bronze and installed on a granite pedestal. The height of the statue is 5 meters.
- The temple grounds include a chapel, a hotel and an icon shop.
- Main gate (2000).
- Fountain called “Memory” (2003). By the way, this fountain was installed in honor of the villages that became part of the modern city; on the edges of the structure you can read the names of these settlements.
The entire complex was built in the same architectural style, all buildings are made of red brick with white frames.
According to reviews from tourists, this attraction of Novocheboksarsk delights and gives reason to be proud of a state that remembers its history.
Cheboksary street art
Graffiti near a shopping mall
Perhaps the most famous graffiti of the city at the moment is “Narspi”, a girl from the poem of the same name written by Konstantin Ivanov in the Chuvash language. It was painted by a local hereditary artist in 2021, and almost immediately this mural became an iconic place in the city, which people from different parts of Russia come to admire.
Presidential Boulevard, 20
"Tunnel" under the Moscow Bridge
On the Cheboksary Bay there is the Moscow Bridge, and under it there is a tunnel - covered in drawings. The author of “Narspi”, artist Ksenia Kokel, began creating an impromptu exhibition, but then other street artists spontaneously joined her. There are mediocre works here and absolutely outstanding ones, so you can’t miss them in case they paint them over?
Moscow Bridge
Suprematist graffiti on the building of the Republican Clinical Hospital
This mural appeared quite recently, in October 2021, and is dedicated to a pressing topic - the coronavirus pandemic. We should thank Olesya Volkova, an artist at the Chuvashia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, and the FormArt street art festival for the graffiti.
Moskovsky prospect, 9
Cathedral of St. Equal to the Apostles Prince Vladimir
This shrine is part of an architectural complex with colonnades and arches, a fountain, a monument and a square.
The site for the construction of the temple was chosen only in 1988, and the first stone was laid 2 years later. The architect of the project is Oreshnikov A.B. Construction work was completed by 1993, the ceremony of consecration of the lower temple was carried out 1 year later, and a service was held immediately.
The main altar was consecrated only in 1996, with the simultaneous assignment of cathedral status.
The temple and architectural complex are located on Vinokurova Street, 53.
What to try
We’ve sorted out what to see in Cheboksary in 1 day, now let’s talk about what’s worth trying in 1 day! Chuvash national cuisine is distinguished by a high content of vegetables and meat, and vegetables to a greater extent.
Meat was cooked mainly on holidays and during the slaughtering season; the rest of the time they experimented with vegetables, nuts and mushrooms. You need to wash everything down with beer (in Chuvashia they are very proud of the local variety), mead or ayran. The relationship with honey here is generally special: it was the main sweetness, and beer was brewed from it, mash, mead and wine were made.
So what are we trying:
Shorpe is a rich soup that is traditionally prepared from offal, preferably lamb.
Shartan (shirtan) is a festive meat dish. It is prepared from lamb meat, which is well seasoned and baked in the oven in a shell made from a sheep's stomach.
Khuran kukli - dumplings with a hundred filling options. They come with potatoes and onions (like Russians), meat, fish, cabbage, green onions and eggs (it turns out that this can be done not only in pies), berries, mushrooms and everything that we managed to collect. The traditional version of huran kukli with cottage cheese and green onions is considered traditional.
Chykyt - baked cottage cheese. They prepare it like this: mix homemade fatty cottage cheese with eggs and spices, and then put it in the oven until all the juices evaporate. The outside is golden brown, and the inside is soft cheese.
Kabartma - Chuvash crumpets. It sounds ordinary, but in fact it is an extremely tasty thing, especially if eaten with sour cream, sugar and honey.
Puremech is a kind of cheesecake with cottage cheese on yeast dough. The filling can be with raisins, dried berries, and even salted with dill.
Where to try Chuvash cuisine
We won’t leave you without addresses either, catch three places where traditional dishes are prepared well:

Cheboksary Bay
The artificial bay was built together with the Cheboksary hydroelectric power station on the site of the old city. When this area was flooded, many ancient buildings and architectural monuments were lost, but now the bay is a favorite place for citizens and guests of the city. Various events, city festivals and shows are often held here. All the main interesting and memorable places of the city are concentrated on the shores of the bay, and two bridges cross the bay itself. Another road runs along a dam, specially built to increase the water level and the attractiveness of the bay. This road is called the “Road to the Temple” (official name), as it leads to the Holy Trinity Monastery.
The Vvedensky Cathedral is the oldest temple in the entire republic. This church is unique as it is the only surviving architectural structure from the 17th century. The cathedral was founded in 1555 by order of Ivan the Terrible. Initially, the temple was built from canvas, and then became wooden, but literally a few years after construction, the building burned down.
The Vvedensky Cathedral was not closed during the revolution, like other churches. And even in the Soviet years, he always received parishioners. In the spring of 1945, the church council and local residents of the city collected more than 130 thousand rubles for the defense of the Soviet Union.
The funds were used to build a tank column. In those days this amount was very large. The rector of the cathedral sent a telegram to Stalin and informed him about the transfer of money. Joseph Vissarionovich himself thanked everyone involved for such help.
Entrance to the monastery territory is not prohibited, but we do not go there. Tatyana Dmitrieva tells tourists that beyond the Volga there are magnificent, but rather expensive sanatoriums with balneological treatment. He points to the nearby park named after Konstantin Ivanov, where during excavations the remains of the grandmother of the first Russian Tsar, Maria Shestova, were allegedly found. There is nothing for tourists to see there yet. The burial itself was buried, in its place an earthen mound and an information board with the image of Shestova’s daughter, since it was not possible to find out what the Tsar’s grandmother herself looked like. City authorities said they would install a chapel in the park. For now these are just plans.
What to bring from Cheboksary
Clothes
Yes, yes, there is something to shop here!
- Kusto hats. At some point, the beanie hats that the guys in Cheboksary sew became very popular. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that photos from trips wearing these hats are posted on the website in a separate section “Sailors”; maybe because they're really cool.
- Burelom Apparel sweatshirts. As the guys say, they make new wave streetwear. We won’t argue, we’ll just recommend.
- Robes from Cheboksary Knitwear. A good old classic, which, we are sure, became the progenitor of other fashionable Cheboksary houses.
Souvenirs
- Dishes decorated with Chuvash ornaments.
- Balm "Parne".
- Shirtan.
- Jewelry in ethnic style.
- Sweets “Wonderful Bird” - so what if you can buy them in any store? They do it right here! By the way, a life hack: put this candy in the freezer before eating, it will become a million times tastier (yes, this is possible).
A trip to Cheboksary is the case when you go for one day, but it feels like a whole week! There are truly enough impressions for many stories: about how delicious the fresh beer is here, how beautifully the bridge across the bay is illuminated with lights, how amazing the local culture and mythology are.

Cheboksary Hydroelectric Power Station and the Museum of Hydropower
Today it is difficult to imagine the city without this Novocheboksarsk landmark, a grandiose structure - a hydroelectric power station. It cannot be said that the hydroelectric power station is the largest in the country; it is part of the Volga cascade of stations and is the last, fifth stage.
There is a long-lasting conflict associated with the hydroelectric power station, because it is located on the territory of three constituent entities of the Russian Federation:
- Chuvashia;
- Nizhny Novgorod region;
- Mari El Republic.
But the disagreement is only on one issue: what level of water should be in the reservoir? Today, the mark is at a lower level - 63 meters, so it is believed that the construction of the hydroelectric power station has not yet been completed and entails a number of both environmental and economic problems.
But whatever the contradictions in power circles, tourists are advised to definitely look into the museum at the hydroelectric power station; there are only positive reviews about it. There is a permanent exhibition within the walls of the museum, in the hall and two exhibition halls. During the tour, you can learn about the history of construction and the significance of the hydroelectric power station for the entire region. The museum is located on Naberezhnaya Street, 34.
