Historical sketch
Founded in 1964 in connection with the construction of the Tuvaasbest plant, which arose on the basis of a deposit of high-quality chrysotile asbestos (white asbestos), explored in 1932. Tuva Ak-Dovurak - “white land”. City since 02/3/1964
From Ak-Dovurak to connect the plant with the railway, a highway was built in 1969, passing through the Western Sayan to the years. Abaza and Abakan.

Economy
The Tyvaasbest plant is a city-forming enterprise of the city. The city arose simultaneously with the emergence of the plant in 1964. The plant produces long-fiber asbestos (there are no analogous grades in Russia), slate and some other goods. After the collapse of the USSR in the 90s, the plant actually stopped and, having changed several private owners, has recently been slowly increasing its production thanks to the constant participation of the government of the republic. Asbestos is mined at a quarry located north of the city. Also in the city is the second largest fuel and energy enterprise of the republic - Ak-Dovurakskaya CHPP.
Name
The name of the city is translated from Tuvan as “white land”. It is associated with an asbestos deposit, which is described in a Tuvan legend: “In time immemorial, kind and brave people lived here, they raised and grazed cattle. But one day they were attacked by cruel warriors. For three days and three nights, brave people fought with the enemy until the last warrior fell. The cruel khan ordered the surviving old men, widows and children to be burned on a high mountain peak. The earth turned black from grief, and the heart of the good people turned into an eternal stone - asbestos."
