The city of Prokopyevsk - Kemerovo region. Central district, photos, streets, attractions

Zenkovsky Park of Culture and Leisure

The park was opened in June 1933, it was created by the citizens. Currently, its area is 200 hectares, and there is also a lake here. Throughout the park there are various fairy-tale characters and houses carved from cedar. In this area there are two sanatoriums, two children's health camps and even a riot police squad base. There is an equestrian center in the park in such areas as tourism, horseback riding, and military affairs. In the summer, the park offers various attractions, tennis courts, and sports equipment rentals. Visitors can enjoy a helicopter flight over the city. In winter, a ski rental center and an ice skating rink are open here.

Sights of Prokopyevsk: description and photos

Among the attractions of Prokopyevsk, the Monument of Glory should be noted. It was installed in Zenkovsky Park in honor of the 40th anniversary of Victory Day. Not long ago the obelisk was reconstructed. There is another landmark of Prokopyevsk in the park - “11 blockade pines”, it is considered the same age as Victory. In 1942, at the height of the war, children from besieged Leningrad were evacuated to Prokopyevsk, who lived here until the end of the war. After the defeat of the fascist troops, the children, before leaving for Leningrad, planted eleven pine trees (according to the number of those caring for them in the orphanage) in the form of a broken blockade ring.

Prokopyevsky Drama Theater

The theater can be considered a real landmark of Prokopyevsk; it was built in the 60s of the last century and bears the name of the Lenin Komsomol. The building itself is unusual, made in the “Stalinist Empire” style. The theater has a young talented team that often goes to festivals and receives prestigious awards. Theater troupes from different cities come to this theater on tour. With the support of the theater, interesting flash mobs are held. It is noteworthy that on Thursdays in June only comedies are shown here.

The halls display completely unique birch bark products and an exhibition of dolls. All exhibits were made by craftsmen from Prokopyevsk. Works by famous painters from different times are also exhibited here. All kinds of master classes are held for all ages.

Museum of Local Lore

Another attraction of Prokopyevsk can be considered the local history museum. It was originally opened on the basis of a school. Students conducted more than 20 different expeditions in the south of the region. In 1961, thanks to the collected collections, a state museum was opened. The exhibition includes the following departments:

  • archeology;
  • ethnography;
  • nature;
  • revolution;
  • Civil War;
  • Patriotic War;
  • space.

The museum provides walking and bus tours of the sights of Prokopyevsk from different times. Museum employees also provide other services: theatrical performances, wedding ceremonies.

What to see in Prokopyevsk in 1 day: TOP-3

Once in Prokopyevsk, the first thing you should do is visit the main city museum, the cathedral and the monument, which has become the hallmark of the city. This can be done in one day.

City Local Lore Museum

  • Address: ave. Shakhtyorov, 63.

The oldest museum in Prokopyevsk opened its doors to the general public in 1961. The new institution is based on the collection of the school museum, created in 1953. The founding father is considered to be the historian M.G. Elkin, who worked for many years as a teacher and then as the director of school No. 1. Mikhail Georgievich organized a museum at the school and personally collected several thousand exhibits for it.

The permanent exhibitions are divided into several thematic rooms. Exhibitions demonstrate the history of the city and region from the 17th century to the present day. Visitors will be told about the development of industry in southern Siberia, coal mining, the nature of the region and local traditions.

Since one of the most famous natives of Prokopyevsk is cosmonaut Boris Volynov, part of the exhibitions is dedicated to space exploration. Among the exhibits there are even spacecraft.

Museum guests can explore the collections on their own or book a tour. Museum workers not only introduce visitors to the exhibitions, but also organize walking and bus excursions to the main attractions of the city. There is a children's history club at the institution.

Cathedral of the Nativity of John the Baptist

  • Address: ave. Builders, 22.

The largest church in Prokopyevsk was built in 2004 in a picturesque pine forest on the outskirts of the city. The huge structure is crowned with five sparkling domes, and above the porch there is a tall octagonal bell tower.

The construction of the church was dedicated to the memory of all the dead miners. In 2005, the solemn consecration of the new cathedral took place, and two years later the building was recognized as an architectural monument.

Over time, a number of other structures appeared on the territory: a small baptismal church in honor of Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir, an administrative building and several outbuildings. The cathedral houses especially revered icons and pieces of relics of saints.

Jesus Christ Statue

  • Address: intersection of Stroiteley Avenue and Nogradskaya Street.

On Stroiteley Avenue, at the highest point of the city of Prokopyevsk, there is a stunning monument depicting Jesus Christ. The heavy bronze sculpture was unveiled in 2012 on Miner's Day. The monument was supposed to be a surprise for the Prokop residents, so the townspeople were not informed in advance about the day of installation.

The monument looks like a smaller copy of the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro: Christ raised his hands up, as if blessing the city and its inhabitants. Together with the huge pedestal, the height of the monument is 11 meters; the 10 commandments are inscribed on a tablet at the foot. The author of the statue is the famous sculptor from Krasnoyarsk Konstantin Zinich.

Monument on the Alley of Heroes

While in the city, you should visit another attraction of Prokopyevsk - a monument to soldiers who died in hot spots. A large black tulip is located under the canopy of the parachute. The monument is located on the Alley of Heroes.

In the city of Prokopyevsk there are many different monuments:

  • Peter I;
  • St. Peter and Fevronia;
  • Jesus Christ the Savior;
  • liquidators of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant;
  • plumbing.

The Aba River is one of the attractions of Prokopyevsk. The river flows through the city and has a picturesque view. Here you can relax from the bustle of the city and enjoy nature. Aba is considered a fish river: pike perch, pike, carp, and crucian carp live in it.

The main attractions of Prokopyevsk with photos and descriptions

The city of Prokopyevsk is located in the south of the Russian Federation in the historical region called Western Siberia, in close proximity to Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo region. This is the largest mining center. Despite the fact that the city lies far from the places beloved by tourists in Russia, there is no special advertising to lure people into it; there is something to see and how to relax.

Interesting places for tourists are concentrated closer to the southern outskirts of the city. There is a widely developed network of technical educational institutions here.

You can have fun in amusement parks, enjoy the silence and nature near ponds and on shady paths.

Vokzalnaya Street

But the central district of Prokopyevsk does not end there. After 5 minutes we are already walking along the station square.

Prokopyevsk station

The L-112 Steam Locomotive is installed here.

You can view train tickets from Prokopyevsk to Moscow and other destinations using the form below.

We also have a separate article on our website about the railway station in Prokopyevsk, which can be viewed here.

If Novokuznetsk, with the light hand of Vladimir Mayakovsky, is called the “garden city,” then Prokop residents consider their city “the black pearl of Kuzbass.”

The Prokopyevsk bus station is fenced on all sides by bars - the fight against terrorism.

Regional Clinical Orthopedic and Surgical Hospital of Prokopyevsk

On the outskirts of the central region there is the Regional Clinical Orthopedic Hospital.

The Stalinist building was surprisingly not renovated for the regional miner's day. In general, there is some kind of problem with hospitals in Prokopyevsk (if only). I remember in the summer they showed me photographs of the building and interior of the hospital for WWII veterans, it’s even worse there, and only that year was the anniversary of the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory.

Then the road from the central region leads to Krasnaya Gorka, and we turned left to climb through Ziminka to Tyrgan. There will be one more, third, final post about Tyrgan.

Prokopyevsk Local History Museum

If this is your first time traveling through the distant Siberian region and you have not passed the small provincial town of Prokopyevsk, then you will not regret it. Even if you can hardly be called a fan of visiting museums, then in Prokopyevsk you need to go to the city’s local history museum to learn more about its history and customs.

The museum has been operating since the summer of 1961. The organization operates a society for young historians, which makes scientific discoveries, conducts archaeological and paleontological expeditions, and travels to places of military battles.

Finding the museum is not difficult; it is located at 63 Shakhtyorov Avenue, in a residential building on the ground floor.

The museum's exhibition is very diverse, regularly replenished and divided into halls. One exhibition is on a permanent basis, the other is changing. Here you can learn about history, specialization, the nature of the city, coal mining technology, and you can also be transported into space to look at spacecraft. The time of the excursion will fly by.

Depending on the wishes of museum guests, a sightseeing, thematic or interactive tour is offered. You can also view the exhibits yourself.

The museum is open every day except Mondays from 10:00 to 17:00.

Monuments and sculptures of Prokopyevsk

Back in Soviet times, a huge number of all kinds of monuments, memorials and memorial plaques were installed in Prokopyevsk. In the last ten years, several more particularly noteworthy sculptures have appeared on the streets of the city. Almost all modern monuments were created by the sculptor Konstantin Zinich.

Monument to St. Procopius

  • Coordinates: 53.798125, 86.857740.

On the southern outskirts of Prokopyevsk, guests are greeted by a monument to the patron saint of the city - the righteous Procopius of Ustyug. The huge bronze sculpture, mounted on a high stone pedestal, can be easily seen from afar.

The total height of the monument is 8 meters. The righteous man is depicted at full height, holding three pokers in his left hand and raising his right hand in a blessing gesture. A three-dimensional bronze icon of the saint is attached to the pedestal. The monument was opened in the fall of 2015.

Monument to I. Selivanov

  • Address: Institutskaya street.

In 2013, a monument dedicated to the outstanding artist Ivan Selivanov appeared near the Vernissage Convention and Exhibition Center. Ivan Yegorovich was one of the most famous masters of the so-called naive art.

The primitivist artist was born in the Arkhangelsk province, but in 1941 he moved to Kuzbass and lived most of his life in Prokopyevsk. Selivanov became famous throughout the world; his works were exhibited in the UK, Germany, France and many other countries.

Sculptor Oleg Ershov depicted Ivan Yegorovich sitting on a bench and thoughtfully looking into the distance. The bronze artist is dressed in a simple suit and tarpaulin boots, has a mop of thick hair on his head, and a long beard covers his chest. In his hands he holds a rooster - this is the bird that can often be seen in the master’s paintings.

Memorial to the Heroes of the Soviet Union

  • Address: Alley of Heroes.

One of the main memorials of the Great Patriotic War was built in 1985 on Komsomolskaya Square. In the center of the small alley, a round platform was made of larch trees with a flower bed in the middle.

The flower garden was surrounded by 15 monuments with the names and portraits of Prokop residents who earned the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Each stele depicts a Hero's Star and a St. George's Ribbon. The memorial was dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Great Victory.

Adam and Eve

  • Address: Gagarin street.

On Gagarin Street, the attention of tourists will definitely be attracted by an unusual monument. The composition illustrates the famous biblical story about the Fall of man: naked Adam and Eve stand near the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and hold the forbidden fruit in their hands.

The tree trunk is wrapped around the hidden Serpent-tempter. The monument symbolizes love and marital fidelity. The monument was erected in 2011, the authorship of the work belongs to the master Konstantin Zinich.

Soon after the grand opening, a new tradition appeared in the city: newlyweds make a wish and walk around the sculpture, holding hands. In recent years, thanks to wedding customs, the tree next to Adam and Eve has been “overgrown” with locks with the names of the lovers.

Monument to B.V. Volynov

  • Address: ave. Shakhtyorov, 35.

Perhaps the most famous resident of Prokopyevsk is the famous cosmonaut Boris Volynov. Boris Valentinovich was born in Irkutsk, but grew up in the Kemerovo region. When the future cosmonaut was three years old, he and his mother moved to Prokopyevsk.

Here the boy graduated from school, then entered the aviation school. In 1960, the young pilot joined the cosmonaut corps, and in 1969 he made his first flight into space.

In 1976, Volynov again flew on a spacecraft. In 1984, Prokop residents erected a lifetime monument to the illustrious fellow countryman. The bronze bust of the cosmonaut stood on Gagarin Avenue for many years, and in 2021 it was moved to Victory Square.

Monument to a plumber

  • Address: Nogradskaya street.

Prokop residents respect not only famous historical figures, but also ordinary people, representatives of simple working professions. So, in 2010, a monument to plumbers appeared in the city. The monument shows a scene from the life of a housing and communal services worker: a man in uniform with a helmet on his head stands waist-deep in a sewer well, holding the hatch with both hands.

The metal master quickly received the name Sanych in honor of the famous plumber in the city - Ivan Aleksandrovich Afonin. The author of the sculpture himself, Konstantin Zinich, claims that his creation does not have a specific prototype, but local residents discovered similarities between the bronze worker and the young Afonin. The monument is located in the most suitable place for it - Communal Workers Alley.

See the sights of other cities of the Kemerovo region - Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk

Prokopyevsk is the “heart” of Kuzbass, a child of mines and Soviet culture. It, a provincial town, continues to develop and constantly delights travelers with new attractions, which can always be seen on excursions.

Drama Theater

Continuing the tour of the city, the Prokopyevsky Drama Theater, which bears the name of the Lenin Komsomol, will be interesting. This is the only theater in the city. Also located at 35 Shakhtyorov Avenue and crowned by a large pedestrian square. It looks very grandiose with columns in the Stalinist Empire style. The theater is valued for its performances, and the cast is famous throughout the country. Locals and tourists call the theater a unique creation of those parts. In addition to its actors, theater troupes often come to the theater on tour.

With the support of this institution, various flash mobs are often held in the city, and on Thursdays in June only comedies are staged.

The theater has its own website where you can view the poster and purchase tickets online.

Prokopyevsk temples and churches

Prokopyevsk is a multi-religious city in the Kemerovo region. In addition to Orthodox churches, there are active Muslim mosques and a Roman Catholic church in the area.

Mahalla Ramadan Mosque

  • Address: Beregovaya st., 32.

Several years ago, the Muslim organization Mahalla-Ramadan was founded in Prokopyevsk, where hundreds of Muslims live. Believers do not have a spacious mosque, as in some surrounding towns, so local adherents of Islam gather in a small brick house on Beregovaya Street.

Muslims not only participate in congregational prayer, but also conduct classes for children and are actively involved in social assistance: visiting veterans, the elderly and prisoners.

Saj Mosque

  • Address: Stepnaya st., 21, village of Verkh-Egos.

Another mosque adorns the village of Verkh-Egos, located 16 kilometers from the regional center. A magnificent one-story building with a green roof and a tall minaret was erected in 2010 with funds from sponsors and Muslims in the area.

The mosque has offices for work, separate rooms for men and women for ablutions, a library and a spacious prayer hall for 150 people. The grand opening of the building took place in 2012.

Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary

  • Address: st. Morozova, 10.

The Church of the Intercession is the first Orthodox building built in Prokopyevsk during Soviet times. The small parish has an unusual and very difficult history. After the Revolution, persecution of religion began in the city, as throughout the country, and services ceased in almost all parishes.

Under fear of reprisals, any rituals were prohibited. Nevertheless, the Prokopchan believers were able to secretly organize prayer meetings in the house of Ivan Korolev. During the Great Patriotic War, the authorities made concessions for the Church. In 1943, Ivan Safonovich purchased a small barracks in the village of Ziminka and converted it into a prayer house.

In the spring of 1945, a few days before the Victory, officials officially registered the religious community. Three months later, the building was rebuilt, giving it a cruciform shape. Two altars were consecrated in the new church: in honor of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos and in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov.

In subsequent decades, the temple was rebuilt more than once and changed its external and internal appearance. At the end of the 90s, a new chapel was opened in the basement. The church is currently active.

The temple is right. Procopy of Ustyug

  • Address: Prokopyevskaya st., 85.

The ancient village was named in honor of the righteous Procopius of Ustyug back in the 18th century, and therefore it is quite expected to see a temple of this saint in the city. The first wooden church was built in 1753 by order of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. The building was destroyed in 1938 during a period of fierce struggle against religion.

Several years ago, a new temple was erected in Prokopyevsk in honor of the city's patron saint. The wooden structure is so small that it looks more like a chapel. In 2013, the church was solemnly consecrated.

Roman Catholic Church

  • Address: Okhotskaya street, 81A.

On the northern outskirts of Prokopyevsk there is the only temple of the Roman Catholic Church in the city. The parish was founded in 1958 by the visiting Greek Catholic priest Vasily Rutka. In 1995, a small temple of the Mother of God of Perpetual Help was built, in which divine services according to the Byzantine rite began to be held regularly.

Tramway Museum

If you want to visit a museum, then give preference to the unusual tram history museum in the city. It is small but interesting. Here you can see models of carriages from different years and talk about the management of tram lines. If you have free time, visit the museum.

Few tourists like to wander aimlessly along the city streets, but you won’t get bored in Prokopyevsk. There are many monuments here, from traditional to modern inventions, in the form of dynamic, almost living compositions. As everywhere else, almost every monument has a place where, by touching, dreams come true. They can be identified by their polished surface. Don't miss the opportunity to make your dreams come true.

The main monuments of the city include:

  1. Monument to a plumber. This bronze monument has been in the city since 2010. The locals gave him the name Sanych. Located in Communal Workers Alley.
  2. Monument to Adam and Eve as a symbol of fidelity and love in a couple. It appeared not so long ago, in 2011. The composition consists of a tree on which the Serpent is hiding, in the center there are two figures of a man and a woman. A large fountain located nearby harmoniously continues the romantic atmosphere. The composition is located on Gagarin Street.
  3. At 43 Stroiteley Avenue, a plumber is waiting for you to rescue a kitten from an electrical line.
  4. The great Emperor Peter I took its place opposite the city administration building. It is located at 41 Shakhterov Avenue.
  5. An interesting composition, under the parachute canopy, is a memorial site for Russian soldiers who fell in hot spots around the planet. The monument is located on the Alley of Heroes.
  6. Peace in the city is solemnly preserved by the sculpture of Jesus Christ the Savior of the World. The 10 Commandments are engraved on the pedestal underneath. The monument is located on Stroiteley Avenue.
  7. The memory of the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident was also honored with an unusual monument. Located on the Alley of Heroes.
  8. The monument to St. Peter and Fevronia protects families and cherishes love. The monument is located in the Student Park.

Architectural monuments of the city of Prokopyevsk

Modern Prokopyevsk was founded on the site of several 17th-century villages, but it is difficult to find ancient buildings in the city. Most of the interesting buildings date back to the Soviet era.

Van Loghem Houses

Johannes Bernardus van Loghem was a Dutch engineer and architect who lived in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. In the 20s, a talented figure supervised the construction of workers’ settlements in the Kemerovo region, including Prokopyevsk.

Van Loghem had to work in difficult conditions: the engineer did not have accurate maps of the area, he was forced to independently study the area and immediately create drawings. The Dutchman worked tirelessly, since housing for the workers of the Kuzbass colony had to be built as soon as possible. The architect designed 15 types of apartment buildings.

Few buildings created according to van Loghem's designs have survived to this day. In Prokopyevsk, several long one-story barracks, called “sausages,” have been preserved. You can see the legacy of the Dutch specialist on Nikitskaya and Klinicheskaya streets, as well as on Shakhterov Avenue.

Shakhtar Stadium

  • Address: st. Kosmonavta Volynova, 9A.

Prokopyevsky stadium is one of the oldest in Kuzbass. A huge sports facility was erected in 1935 on the territory of the former village of Krutiye Topki. In 1940, the first football match officially took place here.

Shakhtar's stands are located in the open air; initially they accommodated 12,500 people. After two large-scale reconstructions, the capacity of the structure was reduced by almost three times; today only 3,400 seats remain in the stadium.

Since Soviet times, the stadium has been decorated with a monument to Lenin, covered in gold paint. Shakhtar hosts all major sporting events and competitions of the city and region, and also trains the football club of the same name.

Houses with towers

  • Address: Artyoma street, 4.

On both sides of the Drama Theater, unusual residential buildings stand symmetrically. It’s impossible not to notice them: the bright yellow-red buildings have turrets topped with spiers and red stars.

The houses themselves are five stories high, while the towers are six stories tall. These are not the only similar examples of Soviet architecture: on Komsomolskaya Street there is a similar building of the Zarya Hotel, built in 1956.

However, several years ago the hotel lost its beautiful spire and, having lost its individuality, merged with the neighboring buildings. The houses near the theater have been preserved in their original form. Like the theater, the towers are illuminated at night.

Zenkovsky Park

A wonderful place to relax when you want more nature is Zenkovsky Park on Kustarnaya Street, 35. Even people from other cities in the country come here.

Everything here is enveloped in the aroma of pine trees and the singing of birds. In winter you can have fun at the ski resort, and in summer you can find any entertainment you like, from tennis to water activities. Everything here is very well thought out in terms of location, there are many cafes. In addition to everything, the park has a huge pond where you can swim or admire the view.

This is the name of the central and largest district of the city, which is also the most modern and the most dynamically developing. Here you can climb the mountain - the highest point of the city - and look at the view. There are many interesting sculptures and shopping centers in this area.

The highlight is the Youth Park with attractions, sports and playgrounds, beautiful trails and an alley of heroes.

This river flows through the city and adds picturesque places for relaxation. You can come here when you want to retire, get away from the bustle of the city, or just enjoy nature. In these places you will forget about your problems and recharge your batteries.

Prokopyevsk is a place where every tourist will find entertainment to suit their taste.
