Kola Bay

Kola Bay

One of the iconic natural attractions of Murmansk and the region amazes with its magnificence at any time of the year. Despite the harsh climatic conditions, the water surface of the bay is never covered with ice. On the western rocky coast is the port city of Polyarny. On the more gentle eastern slopes are Severomorsk and Murmansk.

Locals and tourists often come here to admire the view. The beauty of nature is immeasurable; even in the most severe cold you can hear the sound of running water. And the bay itself is surrounded by tall, spreading trees.

Lamb's forehead near Lake Semenovskoye

Lamb's forehead near Lake Semenovskoye

A rocky bulge formed by the convergence of glaciers in prehistoric times. There are quite a few similar formations in the Northern latitudes, but the Murmansk “lamb’s forehead” is located within the city limits, which makes it the most accessible to tourists.

The rocky outcrop is quite small, with an area of 0.5 hectares, but it deserves attention. Of interest is not only the “ram’s forehead”, but also the vegetation surrounding it: rare species of mosses, low-growing grasses and shrubs.

What to expect from the weather

The weather in Murmansk in November is quite predictable. The air temperature during the day fluctuates around −2−5°C, dropping to −7−10°C at night. And this is thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, which carries warm air masses to Europe. Thanks to it, the climate on the Kola Peninsula is milder than in the regions of the Far North. The city is much warmer than on the coast, especially in early November. And when going to the ocean, you need to take care of suitable clothing. Thermal underwear, warm trekking boots, gloves and a hat will come in handy.

Be prepared for piercing winds, which intensify towards the end of November and can chill you to the bone in open areas. In general, for the northern region, the weather in Murmansk in November is quite comfortable. You can also catch the last colors of autumn, giving the northern landscapes warm, gentle tones, and real snowfalls. Red clusters of rowan berries in the snow, golden hills dusted with snow and nature covered with a white blanket completely compensate for the weather inconveniences.

Weather in Murmansk in November 2021 - forecast of weather forecasters.

Marina (48 years old) from Veliky Novgorod writes in a review:

“The first time I visited Murmansk, I fell in love. And since then I have been here several more times at different times of the year. Most of all I like winter Murmansk. The snow cover suits the city very well. It covers up shortcomings in the form of bad roads and garbage thrown in the wrong place. There is also a lot of light and illumination here, I have never seen so much anywhere else. It feels like you’re in a winter fairy tale.”

Monument to the victims of the intervention

Monument to the victims of the intervention

There have been many difficult periods in the history of the Russian Arctic. One of them began with the arrival of the English ship Gloria, which delivered detachments of marines to the North. During the 2 years of intervention, hundreds of political prisoners died in the Yokange convict prison. In the fall of 1919 alone, 1,500 people were imprisoned.

The memorial was erected on a mass grave containing the remains of 136 Iokange prisoners and 24 rebels. The ceremonial opening of the monument, created by Murmansk iron workers, took place in 1927. Later, a beautiful square with alleys appeared around the memorial.

The cathedral building is made in a strict, ascetic style. Its appearance emphasizes the severity of the Arctic. The azure-colored domes that crown the cathedral add color to the temple. Unlike the exterior, the interior is striking in its beauty and splendor.

The architecture of the building is typical of the 50s. and differs little from similar structures erected at the same time. Above the central part is a rounded tower with a bright green roof, topped with a spire with a star.

The design of the Murmansk station has its own peculiarity - the station building is located much higher than the track. The platforms can only be accessed through passages provided on the ground floor.

Semenovskoye Lake: park and geological monument Baraniy Lob

Address : st. Geroev-Severomortsev (embankment of Semenovskoye Lake) Opening hours : park and surrounding area - around the clock; attractions: 11:00 – 20:00; boat station: 11:00 – 23:00 Cost : 50-350 rub. for attractions

Semenovskoye Lake is located in the Leninsky district of Murmansk. It takes its name from a legend talking about a certain fisherman Semyon, who lived in these places.

Now along the coast there is a wide embankment, a huge amusement park and a memorial complex to the dead sailors has been erected. This place is rich in history, as large-scale brutal battles took place here during the war.

Reconstruction of the park is still ongoing. The city committee plans to expand it, create bicycle paths, separate secluded places for recreation, and increase the entertainment area. Currently, there is a large amusement park on the territory, and upon entering, visitors are greeted by huge green figures made from grass: a bear cub, a flower and a ball. This is a symbolic image of the happy childhood of a little resident of Murmansk.

In addition to the attractions, there is a youth creativity center, an aquarium, a walrus society, a boat station and a beautiful fountain.

Right on the territory of the lake there is an interesting geological object - Ram's forehead . This is the name archaeologists give to an exposed granite outcrop believed to have arisen during the Archean period. The monument is more than 2.5 billion years old, and from its cracks and furrows one can draw conclusions and assumptions about the trajectory of the ancient glacier.

Five Corners Square

Address : intersection of Lenin Ave., st. Vorovskogo, Leningradskaya st.

The Five Corners Square is actually based on a five-pointed rhombus and is located at the intersection of 5 roads. At the moment, only 4 streets lead to it: Lenin Avenue, st. Vorovskogo, Leningradskaya st. This is one of the main squares of Murmansk; the city’s coat of arms and models of the hero-city’s awards were strengthened on it.

Here stands the building of the Murmansk Regional Duma, the local Palace of Culture named after. Kirov, Main Post Office, 2 large hotels.

The square has not retained its historical appearance. Initially, it was surrounded by wooden two-story houses, demolished in the mid-80s of the 20th century.

If you have not yet chosen where you will live and want to save money when booking, we recommend using the RoomGuru service. Firstly, it contains hotels, apartments and guest houses from many different booking systems, so you won’t miss out on a worthwhile option. Secondly, you can immediately compare prices for one place in different services and book where it is cheaper (this is not always Booking!).

Music Alley

The square is recognized as one of the most beautiful, romantic places in Murmansk and the Arctic. When the townspeople voted to decide on the name of the landmark, the result was influenced by the following fact: an art school and a philharmonic society work nearby.

Around the buildings you can constantly hear the sounds of music, the voices of singers. However, the attraction also has a second (unofficial) name: “Alley of Love.” Newlyweds traditionally take photo sessions in this picturesque place, and lovers make dates.

The park has neon semi-arches in the shape of hearts. The alley looks elegant at any time of the day. Several years ago she gained fame far beyond the Arctic Circle. The National Geographic Traveler Russia magazine recognized it as the most romantic place in the country.

Taking a selfie in the park is considered a must-do for many tourists visiting the city. Travelers have a superstition: visiting a music alley brings good luck in love.

Regional Museum of Local Lore

In a few years, the cultural institution will celebrate its centenary. Next to its building there is an interesting local landmark: a monument to the legendary icebreaker Ermak. The museum's 19 exhibition halls present unique geological and historical collections.

It has an exhibition dedicated to the structure of a sea vessel (the ship is placed in a dry aquarium). The museum has rarities that allow you to learn a lot about the life and everyday life of the indigenous northern peoples: the Sami, the Pomors.

Particularly popular among visitors is the hall where Soviet household items from the 50s are displayed. The museum's collections contain 160 thousand unique, rare items. The oldest library in the Murmansk region operates in the same building.

The cultural institution is open to guests every day except Thursday and Friday. Once a month, children and pensioners can visit museum exhibitions for free.

Reason No. 3: Sredny and Rybachy peninsulas

To get there you will need:

1) Russian passport for passing through the border zone in Titovka. From here you can already see Norwegian territorial waters, so this is a necessary measure.

In Titovka you can run into a cafe (there is only one) where freshly caught fish is excellently prepared. This is the most ordinary roadside catering establishment, without interior frills or problems, but truly worthwhile;

2) ATV. Renting is not cheap - from 15 thousand per day, and some go there by bicycle or car, but the faces of these drivers are always exhausted.

The peninsula is indescribably beautiful and objectively deserves one of the lines in the list of the top 10 places in Mother Russia.

Residents claim that whales sometimes appear close to the coastline. But if you decide to go for one night, the chances of admiring the sea giants are, of course, slim.

You can stay at the Bolshoye Ozerko recreation center overlooking Motovsky Bay for 2,500 rubles per day. On Rybachy, all military structures from World War II have survived. There are even abandoned cities on the peninsulas, without a single human or non-human soul.

Oceanarium

The entertainment complex on Semenovskoye Lake is considered the northernmost in Europe. During Soviet times, an institute laboratory was built in the Murmansk region to study the behavior of mammals in natural conditions.

After the collapse of the state, the scientific center was closed, and a unique oceanarium was created on its basis. Today, Arctic seals live and perform in it. In the aquarium you can see bearded seals and ringed seals.

The entertainment facility has special programs for young visitors. Photography of the show is allowed free of charge. For the opportunity to take pictures and videos near the inhabitants of the Arctic, you need to pay a small amount. There is a children's club at the aquarium, where it is easy to order a one-time lesson for your child, dedicated to the inhabitants of the aquatic depths.

Locomotive-monument L-4386

The vehicle became a city landmark relatively recently. The freight mainline steam locomotive was built in the middle of the last century. It recalls Soviet times and the role of the October Railway in the life of the region.

It is noteworthy: the technology created in the 50s is quite functional. Transport, if necessary, can be removed from the pedestal and hit the road.

The steam locomotive monument is located next to the railway tracks. To take a selfie against its background, you need to approach the object from the side of the pedestrian crossing. The letter “L” in the name of the equipment reminds of the brilliant Soviet designer Lev Lebedyansky.

He developed projects for steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, and gas turbine locomotives, carried out leadership work, and during the Khrushchev “thaw” he found himself in disgrace. Lebedyansky's inventions influenced the economic development of Murmansk and the Arctic.

Museum of History, Culture and Life of the Kola Sami

The cultural object in the village of Umba (357 kilometers from the regional center) is a structural subdivision of the Murmansk Museum of Local Lore and a kind of pearl of the Arctic. There is no other such authentic collection in the world. The history of the Kola Sami Museum began with a small school collection of antiquities.

The hobby of a simple teacher gave rise to a grandiose regional project for preserving the cultural heritage of indigenous northern peoples. To house the exhibits, the institution was given the building of the cultural center, built in Soviet times.

The object is an interesting example of how elements of neoclassical architecture, fashionable in the USSR, harmoniously fit into the northern landscape. The museum's collection consists of more than 800 items.

Ancient artifacts occupy a special place among the exhibits. They confirm scientific hypotheses that human civilization in the Arctic has existed for at least 3 thousand years. The museum contains: stone with petroglyphs, interior items of a wooden Sami house, traditional clothes of reindeer herders, and items of applied art.

There is a regular transport connection between Murmansk and Umba, but it causes complaints among tourists and local residents. The most convenient way to get to the museum is by rented car or as part of an excursion group.

Reason #1: gastronomic tourism

Take a look at the Reindir shop, where local venison from the aforementioned Lovozero is sold in any variation - for example, cheese-made, with barley or in the form of sausages.

Seafood - crab and fish - is another source of pride for Murmansk residents. Local residents especially praise the dried ruff, which fishermen prepare directly on the ship and sell to the surrounding markets.

Men like fishing in the sea, and if there are also divers among them, then catching a sea urchin is not a problem. Right there on the ship they split it and drink it.

Poster for June

In the first month of summer there are additional days off. On June 12, the city traditionally hosts festive events designed for children, adults and youth. Plan a trip for the June holidays to celebrate Russian Independence Day with Murmansk residents.

The poster for the end of June (last weekend) promises an interesting program for young people. The International Youth Arctic Forum is scheduled to be held in Murmansk on the 26th and 27th. The weather and the established polar day suggest that events will be held non-stop for 24 hours.

Lenin Avenue

Lenin Avenue is the main thoroughfare of Murmansk; it received its current name on October 14, 1957. Its foundation was carried out back in 1916 and they wanted to call it Nikolaevsky Prospekt. But the plans were not destined to come true due to revolutionary events and the civil war.

The first brick buildings along the avenue appeared in 1934.

The captain's houses, 7 floors high, are interesting in appearance. At that time these were real skyscrapers. It is noteworthy that the buildings were built in a short time, less than a year, and entirely by hand. Even to the 7th floor the material was carried up the stairs.

The monuments to the defenders of the Arctic on Lenin Avenue are not accidental: trains left for the Second World War from here, and German prisoners passed through here 2 years later. The highway was badly damaged during the war and it took several decades to restore it again. The monument to the sixth Heroic Komsomol battery, the monument to 19-year-old Anatoly Bredov, black marble slabs with names - all this was created at the expense of the residents and by their own efforts.
