Actually, the Caspian is not exactly a sea, but a huge lake (although the water in it is a little salty), which is located on the border between Europe and Asia. In total, history knows 70 names for this body of water, and in some places it is still called the Khazar Sea today.
The Caspian Sea is especially loved by avid fishermen (by the way, more than 90 percent of the world's sturgeon are caught there). So, even if you don't often pick up a fishing rod, it's worth trying this type of entertainment while you're here. As usual, there is a lot of garbage on the banks, but overall the places are beautiful.
Competition for people in fishing comes from seagulls circling over the water, looking for prey. You also keep your eyes open: if you’re lucky, you can admire sea turtles.
How to get there
Makhachkala, whose sights can pleasantly surprise travelers, is located at a considerable distance from the central cities of Russia. Therefore, the most common way to get there is by plane.
The easiest way to find inexpensive and convenient tickets for flights is from Moscow, from where planes fly 3-5 times a day. Several flights a week operate from St. Petersburg.
Transport connections with other cities are difficult, and the flight schedule regularly undergoes changes, so you will have to monitor it for some time or purchase tickets with a transfer in the capital. You can only get from the airport to the city by taxi or one of the not very regular minibuses.
The second popular way is by train. There is a daily train connection only with Moscow, the travel time is about 40 hours.
