Story

Evpatoria is one of the oldest cities in the world and has already celebrated its 2500th anniversary. The settlement here was founded in the 5th - 6th century BC. by the ancient Greeks. The city was named Kerkinitida and in the 4th century BC. existed as a polis. Then it was subordinated to the Chersonesos state and flourished as one of its centers.

In the 2nd century BC. Kerkinitis was captured and practically destroyed by the Scythians. After some time, the city was liberated by the army of Diophantus, but the majority of the population chose to remain in Chersonesus. In the 4th century BC. the settlement was captured by the Huns and actually fell into decay.

The medieval history of Evpatoria contains practically no information. It is known that in the 15th century the Crimean Tatars founded the Gezlev fortress here, which grew into a large trading center in the 16th century.

At the end of the 18th century, the city was included in the Russian Empire and received its modern name. During the Crimean War, a base for the British and Turks was located in Yevpatoria. During World War II, the city was occupied by German troops in 1941 and liberated in 1944.

Population of Evpatoria

The population in Yevpatoria is diverse and includes about 94 different nationalities and nationalities. Russians make up the majority of the population - 57%, then Ukrainians - 32%, Crimean Tatars - 10% and 1% are made up of other nationalities (Belarusians, Karaites, Jews, Azerbaijanis, Poles, Moldovans, Greeks, Germans, Bulgarians, Koreans, Armenians, Georgians, Uzbeks). The population is peaceful and educated (34% have higher education) and their neighbors are wonderful.

Today, the population of Evpatoria has increased and is about 123 thousand people, and 10 years ago it was 117 thousand. Population growth is increasing due to internal migration, due to the arrival of young couples for permanent residence and the arrival of students to study.

In summer, the city's population can increase to 1 million people due to holidaymakers.

Due to favorable living conditions in the resort city, the average life expectancy is 77 years. The age of the population is different - from a baby to an old man, in the courtyards you can see a lot of mothers with babies walking, as well as grandmothers on benches. There are a lot of small children in Evpatoria, and this is explained by the fact that the city has all the conditions to give birth and raise a child. The city also has a sufficient number of preschool, school and higher educational institutions.

During the inter-resort period, Evpatoria is in peace and quiet - taking a break from the holiday season, since with its beginning turmoil, fun, constant movement and noise begin.

Attractions

Ruins of Kerkinitida
In Evpatoria, the ruins of ancient Kerkinitida have been preserved in several places. So on Gorky Street (not far from the port) there is a restored section of ancient walls, and on Simferopolskaya Street (near the Museum of Local Lore) a glass pyramid was built over excavations and ancient artifacts.

We recommend taking a look at the Museum of Local Lore, which was founded in 1925 and contains about 80 thousand exhibits.

Embankment
Embankment is the most popular street in Evpatoria, named after Maxim Gorky. It was created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Here you can see several remarkable mansions and interesting sculptural compositions.

There is a nice small arboretum on Pushkin Street.

Gezlev Gate
Gezlev Gate is a medieval entrance to the Tatar city of Gezlev. The gate was built in the 15th century. The bazaar began immediately behind them.

Temple of St. Elijah

The Temple of St. Elias is a church in the traditional Greek style, built in the 20s of the last century by order of the local Greek community.

St. Nicholas Cathedral

St. Nicholas Cathedral is the main temple of Evpatoria, built at the end of the 20th century in the traditional Byzantine style. The church building has an octagon shape and a large 18-meter dome.

Juma-Jami Mosque

The Juma-Jami Mosque is one of the largest and most beautiful Muslim buildings in Crimea. The mosque was built at the end of the 16th century by order of the Crimean Khan Devlet I. Its architecture is an imitation of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul: a large main dome and two high minarets (33 meters).

Armenian Church

The Armenian church was built in the first half of the 19th century and has been preserved in very good condition.

There is also an ancient synagogue in Yevpatoria, built at the beginning of the 20th century. During World War II, the synagogue was used as a stable. In 1998, the synagogue received its religious status back.

Tekie
Tekie is the only Muslim dervish monastery in Crimea. It was founded in the 15th - 16th centuries. The complex of buildings includes the tekie itself, a mosque and a Muslim educational institution (madrasah).

Arch in the old town

Evpatoria has a nice old town with an oriental flavor. Here you can have a great walk among the narrow streets, see interesting old buildings and main attractions.

Greco-Scythian settlement

The Greco-Scythian settlement is the ruins of an ancient settlement 7 km southwest of Yevpatoria. The settlement was founded in the 4th century BC. and was one of the outposts of Chersonesos. In the 1st century AD the settlement was abandoned.

City infrastructure

On the Crimean Peninsula, since 1990, every year among resort cities with a population of more than 60 thousand people. The so-called competition “Settlement for the best improvement and support of public order” is being held. Evpatoria has been the winner more than once. Repair and reconstruction of the city is happening gradually and not in fragments, as in other resort cities, but comprehensively. The city hall's plans are to transform Evpatoria into a European resort and preserve all cultural monuments.

Problems such as broken roads, clogged drains, and lack of lighting still occur in the city.

For example, in the Moinaki area, closer to the lake, there are no lanterns, and after dark it is scary to walk there. Road repairs along central streets are carried out every year, but in courtyards and distant microdistricts there are practically no roads. But the main problem is clogged and non-functional city drains throughout the city. After heavy rains, the water can stand 60 centimeters and last for a long time. Plus, when it rains, a terrible sewer smell emanates from the drains.

But there is also good news for lovers of such transport as a bicycle. In the city, in the microdistricts of Center, Moinaki and Sanitarno-resortny, bicycle paths have been created where cars are prohibited from entering, as well as about 30 bicycle parking lots near supermarkets and markets.

Evpatoria also has a well-developed transport hub. It has its own railway station, sea cargo and passenger port, and bus station.

Train Station

The city has transport links of both internal and interregional importance.

Minibuses, buses and city taxis travel around the city itself. There are no problems getting to any point in Evpatoria. True, during the holiday season, minibuses and buses are overloaded towards the embankment, and during this period there are frequent traffic jams. There is also a unique type of transport in the city - a tram, it is called a “single-track”, it can take you to the railway and bus stations, as well as to the city embankment.

Single track

The social sphere in the city is well developed. Each district has preschool and school educational institutions. It is difficult to get into kindergartens; an application must be written immediately after the birth of the baby. There are also specialized kindergartens in the city: speech therapy, orthopedic, and those with visual and hearing impairments. In Yevpatoria there are about 30 preschool institutions and about the same number of schools.

Also in Yevpatoria itself you can get secondary and higher education. There are also enough medical facilities, because the resort is aimed at treating and relaxing holidaymakers and local residents.

When is the best time to go

Evpatoria is located on the Western coast of Crimea, so the climate here is different from the resorts of the Southern coast (for example, Yalta). It is almost always dry, sunny, and in summer there is no intense heat due to the sea breeze. Many tourists who often travel abroad note that the climate of the resort is similar to the weather conditions of the south of France.

You can go to Yevpatoria for a beach holiday and recovery as early as May - the sea warms up quickly and remains warm until mid-October. The hottest time here is in August, it can be +40 °C, but tourists feel quite comfortable thanks to the fresh wind from the sea. It is better to plan an excursion trip to Evpatoria at the end of spring or beginning of autumn.

Temple of St. Elijah

Address: st. Brothers Buslaev, house 1

The Orthodox Greek Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah is one of the youngest religious buildings in the city. The Greco-Byzantine style of the church is embodied in multi-colored stained glass windows characteristic of national architecture. From above the building looks like a cross. Thanks to the height of the three-tier bell tower, the church rises paternally above the rest of the buildings of Evpatoria.

The temple was erected in the 20th century at the expense of the Greek community of the city. The project was implemented under the leadership of architect Heinrich in 1918. In 1936, the temple building was reorganized under the Committee of Physical Culture and Sports. In the 2000s, a new history of the Elias Church began. In 2003, a new bell and a slab were installed here for the holy martyr Elizar Spiridonov, the first rector of the church. Now St. Elias Church is one of the main architectural attractions of the city.

Turkish baths

Built in the 16th century, the medieval Turkish bath retained the traditional layout of that century: the first from the entrance was the dressing room, then the dressing room and the bathhouse. To illuminate the bathhouse, sunlight was used, penetrating into the room through special window openings in the dome. The perimeter of the bathhouse was lined with marble, and fonts and benches were made from it. Warm air was supplied through underground tunnels to heat the room.

The Turkish bath of Evpatoria ceased to function in the 90s of the 20th century. Since then, the building has been restored several times, but over time, the monument of Crimean architecture fell into disrepair.

How to get there

Many roads to Yevpatoria lead through Simferopol, especially if you arrive in Crimea by plane or by train. Evpatoria has direct railway connections with a limited number of cities, for example, with Moscow and St. Petersburg, and there is simply no civil airport in Evpatoria.

You can get from Simferopol to Yevpatoria by bus - about 250 rubles per ticket or by train - from 120 rubles.

The fastest way to get to Yevpatoria with your own or rented car is along the P-25 highway; the journey will take about an hour.

Memorial wall

Address: Theater Square

Many city tours include a visit to the memorial wall. The wall was erected in 2003 in memory of the 2500th anniversary of the founding of the city. There are many marble shields on the wall telling about the historical events of Evpatoria. Also on the wall are high reliefs of legendary personalities related to the formation of the city. Thus, guests can find an image of Herodotus, who first discovered the settlement of Kerkinitis, and of the Russian Empress Catherine II, who gave the name to the modern city.

Where to go with your child?

In the city of Evpatoria you can also have a wonderful holiday with children. In addition to a number of places described in the previous section, you should go with your child to Dinoparks - there are two of them. They will immerse you and your children in the world of the prehistoric Jurassic period, when dinosaurs roamed our planet. It’s interesting that many of the specimens on display here are life-size.

Children will also enjoy Frunze Park, filled with various entertainment, including children's. The Ferris wheel is one of them. While not very high, it still provides riders with stunning views of the coast and city limits, which is especially wonderful here in the evening. Recently, the Ferris Wheel opened on Tereshkova Embankment. Read about it in detail .

The kids will also be overly happy to be on the shores of Lake Moinaki, which Western Evpatoria is proud of. Relaxing here means not only smearing each other with silt and healing mud, but also wonderful healing air, which is rarely found in the steppe zone of Crimea.

The Evpatoria embankments will give your child a lot of entertainment. In the period from June to July, children's towns with a variety of amusements are literally set up there. There is a shooting range, mini-car rides, and inflatable slides that land children in the sea.

Near the Dinopark there is also a miniature Crimea park, an analogue of Bakhchisarai and Alushtinsky. Although it is inferior to its counterparts in size, it is still very interesting, especially for children. There is another one next to it. You can also find the Giant's House.

Miniature Park

Website: minievp.ru Address: Evpatoria, st. Kirova, house 34/42 Cost: 600 rubles, from 3 to 13 years - 400 rubles, up to 3 years free.

Many of the sights of Evpatoria will be of interest to young guests. The children's health resort of the Crimean Peninsula is rightfully famous for its miniature park. Many landmarks of Crimea have been recreated in their exact models. Thus, the park displays exact models of the Vorontsov Palace, the Swallow's Nest and many other famous buildings.

A visit to the miniature park is not only an interesting, but also a useful event, because during the organized excursion, guests will be able to learn about each of the exhibits on display. The guides will tell you a brief history of the structure and interesting facts about it. A visit to the park will take about 2 hours.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Evpatoria can be found to suit every taste and budget. Conventionally, it is divided into three groups:

  1. Sanatoriums. In the west of Crimea, in particular in Yevpatoria, the largest number of health resorts on the peninsula are concentrated. This is explained by the healing climate and the presence of many lakes with healing mud. Accommodation and treatment in boarding houses in the city will cost on average from 2,000 to 5,000 rubles per night.
  2. Hotels . The choice of hotels in Evpatoria is very large - from small guest houses with several rooms to luxury five-star hotels. The price range for a room is the same - from 2,000 to 10,000 rubles per day and above. When choosing a hotel, you should focus on reviews and location. Hotels on the first coastline will always cost more, prices also change depending on the season.
  3. Private houses . An option for those who love home comfort and want to save money. With some private owners you can negotiate meals for an additional fee, but in others you will have to cook yourself. It’s better to find out prices on the spot; sometimes you can even bargain. But on average they are one and a half to two times lower than in hotels.

Evpatoria Dolphinarium

Website: dolphinevpatoria.ru Address: Evpatoria, st. Kyiv 19/20.

The largest dolphinarium on the Crimean coast is located in the Frunze Park, not far from the Black Sea coast. The modern architectural structure, topped with an original dome, houses a 22-meter swimming pool and an auditorium for 800 guests.

The creative team of the dolphinarium annually delights visitors with an updated show program, the roles of which are played by Black Sea dolphins, white whales (beluga whales), fur seals and lions. The program script is interactive and designed for the participation of young viewers.

Due to the original design of the dome, which ensures positive temperatures at any time of the year, the dolphinarium operates even in the most severe frosts. The program schedule can be found on the dolphinarium website.

Gorky Embankment

Between Frunze Park and Duvanovskaya Street there is Gorky Embankment. The coastal strip, stretching for 800 meters, consists of spacious sandy beaches and a walking area.

The promenade is decorated with decorated columns, wrought-iron fences and several viewing platforms. Due to the abundance of nightclubs and restaurants, the embankment received the nickname “Night”. But there is also something to do on the main street during the day: there are children's attractions, a park of living sculptures and numerous entertainment shows. The most important attractions of Evpatoria are located nearby.

The most noticeable highlight of the embankment is the sculpture of Hercules. Ancient Greek storytellers claimed that it was in this place that the famous son of Zeus loved to relax. It is no wonder that the bronze figure of the hero expresses relaxed contemplation and calm.
