Virtual tour of Krasnaya Street (Krasnodar)

Krasnaya is the main street of Krasnodar, where the administrative, business, cultural and social life of the Kuban capital is concentrated. The main city events are held here, and acquaintance with Krasnodar and its attractions begins from here.

The highway runs along the border of the Western and Central intracity districts: one road from the street. Guard north to the street. named after Budyonny, and then into two roads separated by a wide boulevard to the street. named after Gavrilov P.M. and st. Officer's. The length of the street is about 5.05 kilometers.

History, renaming

Red Street has existed almost since the very foundation of Krasnodar (then and until 1920 - Yekaterinodar), but it received its name later. The first written mention of the name appears in a document from 1835. The word “red” means beautiful, best, honorable, ceremonial. Some local historians also associate the name with long shopping rows made of baked red bricks that were once located along the road.

The main street has undergone several name changes. From 1914, after the visit of Russian Emperor Nicholas II (1868-1918) to Krasnodar, and until the 1917 revolution, Krasnaya was Nikolaevsky Avenue. Then, for some time, it became Rostov and named after Shevchenko - in honor of the Ukrainian poet Taras Grigorievich Shevchenko (1814-1861). During the German occupation of Krasnodar (1942-1943) during the Great Patriotic War, the invaders called the Adolf-Hitler Strasse highway in honor of the head of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler (1889-1845). From 1949 to 1957, the street bore the name of Stalin in honor of the statesman and military figure, head of the USSR (1924-1953) Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (1878-1953). On April 22, 1957, the final return of the historical name took place.

"Seven Streets"

At the end of last year, the city started talking about an ambitious project that would make seven streets in the city center comfortable for walking and recreation. And not on weekends, but on an ongoing basis. Traffic flows will be significantly reduced, and the emphasis will be on people and environmental friendliness. They called it simply “Seven Streets”. Implementation has already begun.

It was decided to start from Chapaev Street. We developed two sketches of the architectural appearance of the area from the street. Rashpilevskaya to st. Krasnoarmeyskaya. One solution leaves one lane for cars. According to the second, it will be completely pedestrian. The sketch will now be finalized taking into account the wishes of residents.

“The project is very interesting and ambitious. And, in principle, we are ready to begin implementing it. But the implementation of this project must be supported by the townspeople,” said Evgeny Pervyshov , the mayor of Krasnodar, at one of the meetings.

When asked why Krasnodar needs this, the architects say that the center of a million-plus city must correspond to its status. This will give impetus to the development of small and medium-sized businesses and change traffic from automobile to bicycle and pedestrian.

It was decided to start with Chapaeva Street, since in the future it will connect two serious projects regarding the formation of the green framework of the city: a single embankment and the Karasuny linear park.

One of the sketches was developed based on the recommendations of specialists from the Higher School of Economics and the Institute of Transport. Along it, the street will retain one lane of car traffic (from West to East), as well as a bicycle path.

The second option was developed based on the opinions of those living there - they want the street to be completely pedestrian and consistent with its historical appearance in this part.

“Yes, I am exactly for there to be no traffic flow here. Imagine how great it will be. These exhausts will leave the cars, there will be constant traffic jams. It would be better if people walk and relax here, I am completely on the side of those who want these transformations. And don’t look at the fact that I’m in my eighties, I’m progressive and for everything new,” Raisa Ilyina , a resident of Krasnodar, told a FAN correspondent.

Historical reference

Krasnodarskaya Street received the name “Red” from the very foundation of the city, and not at all from Soviet times, as one might think. This word used to mean “beautiful,” which fully corresponds to this Kuban corner. Indeed, Krasnaya is the most beautiful street in the Kuban capital.

It is on Krasnaya that the mixture of many architectural styles is clearly visible - pre-revolutionary, Soviet era with its Stalinist and Brezhnev houses, as well as buildings of the post-Soviet era.

There are also new buildings on Krasnaya, built by analogy with the old destroyed architectural monuments.

Monument to Catherine II and a little history

We go to the legislative assembly:

Opposite it is a small park and a majestic monument to Catherine II . In the center of the pedestal is the text of the Charter dated June 30, 1792. On the left, Prince Potemkin-Tavrichesky is depicted against the background of battle banners and military insignia. On the right are the first three atamans of the Black Sea Cossack army: Zakhary Chepega, Sidor Bely and Anton Golovaty. On the back side of the monument there is a picture of a blind kobzar with a guide, and there is also a list of victories won by Russia with the participation of the Kuban Cossacks.

Monument to Catherine II

This monument reflects the history of the founding of Krasnodar . On June 30, 1792, Catherine II issued a Charter to the Black Sea Cossack Army, according to which this land was transferred to the local Cossacks. And in 1793 they founded the city of Ekaterinodar here, reflecting the essence of its appearance in the name. Initially there was a military camp here, then a fortress. And since 1860, Ekaterinodar became the center of the formed Kuban province. Received city status in 1867. Renamed Krasnodar in 1920. At the moment, the city's population is about 850 thousand people.

This is where Krasnaya Street ends and the main attractions too. Then you can stroll along the neighboring streets, look at the historical part of the city and even find your lost wallet . True, it is too heavy to lift, apparently there is too much money lying there)))

Try it, steal it))

In the next part we will walk along the embankment of the Kuban River, visit Victory Park and Sunny Island, and I will also share the main impressions of visiting the city of Krasnodar.

A look into the future

One way or another, the implementation of this project has already begun. Of course, it will be adjusted and improved. Many points will be discussed personally with residents, the emphasis is on this. Because they make the city comfortable not only for guests, but also for those who live in it.

“We must answer this question: is the historical center of Krasnodar for pedestrians or motorists? If we give priority to pedestrian traffic, this will entail development in several directions at once. Citizens and guests of the city will be able to freely walk around the historical center and see the sights. Small businesses will also receive an incentive to develop: it will be possible to open summer cafes on wide sidewalks, which is now impossible to do with the width of the pedestrian paths being one and a half meters. We will also be able to plant trees and create conditions for cyclists,” said Natalya Mashtalir , chief architect of Krasnodar.

press service of the Krasnodar administration /

The implementation of the project will most likely take more than one year. But the result must exceed all expectations. Not only its authors are sure of this. There will always be those who are skeptical, but it often happens that ideas implemented in the city then become known far beyond its borders. At the same time, a “historical quarter” is now being created in Krasnodar. They want to recreate a section of old Yekaterinodar.

Supporters and opponents

Each option has both pros and cons. If there is a bike path and a road there, it will be a good transport artery. And if you make it pedestrian, the amount of greenery increases.

The Krasnodar mayor's office says that there are no parking lots on this site; they are located in the adjacent areas. During the reconstruction, not a single legal parking space will be removed. At the same time, the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, if necessary, can work on the arrangement of paid parking on the site of a demolished dilapidated building.

“If we talk about what this project is for - not about small and medium-sized businesses, but about specific things that can be touched, then we see that by removing 20 illegal parking spaces, we will get 118 new trees in this area, about 600 new shrubs, 420 square meters of landscaping and 720 square meters for pedestrians. And also places to place summer cafes,” said Natalya Mashtalir , chief architect of Krasnodar.

Within the framework of “Seven Streets”, close interaction will continue with residents of buildings located on these streets and will hold open meetings for everyone.

Experts say that the project is an attempt to implement a modern vision of urban development with a transition to the priority of pedestrians over motorists. In terms of long-term effects and social benefits, this approach has proven successful in many cities around the world.

“I definitely think that Krasnodar needs this project. Moreover, not only specific design decisions are important, but also flexibility in the system for their development and adoption. This is a clear indicator of the openness of the system and the willingness to optimize the project taking into account feedback, and not just a desire to “do good” to the city community. For me, there are no obvious disadvantages in the project; rather, there are individual details that require further refinement. However, I note that many solutions are often perceived with skepticism, since they are counterintuitive. Moreover, their correctness has been proven both by computer modeling and specific cases,” Artem Slyusarevsky , head of the architectural and design bureau CG Garnet, member of the Union of Architects of Russia, told FAN.

He added that for the balanced development of the city, it is important to develop public spaces not only in the center, but also to develop other centers of public attraction, forming a system of pedestrian scenarios that will be interconnected.

Let us note that until recently only part of Krasnaya Street became pedestrianized on weekends. As part of the preliminary stage of the “Seven Streets” project, two more sections of roads in the regional center were made pedestrian.

“We are gradually introducing traffic restrictions on sections of streets in the central part of the city, making them pedestrian on weekends and holidays, similar to Krasnaya Street. The first two sections will be closed from the evening of Friday, April 23,” Vladimir Arkhipov , director of the Department of Transport and Road Facilities of Krasnodar, told FAN.

On weekends and holidays, traffic on sections of the street is now limited. Rashpilevskaya from Chapaev to Mir and on Krasnoarmeyskaya from Gogol to Dlinnaya.

Some restrictions are introduced at this time on the street section. Ordzhonikidze from Rashpilevskaya to Oktyabrskaya. Prohibition signs have already been installed there. The restrictions will not affect the vehicles of residents of houses located in this block and special equipment.

The Krasnodar City Hall noted that, as part of the “Seven Streets” project, they are currently exploring options for changing traffic on several more sections of streets in the city center. They will become one-sided, the changes will come into force on May 5 and 15.

“It's very tough. constantly. All these streets of ours are often one-way, traffic jams are inevitable here. What will happen to the neighbors when they start blocking it all off, I’m afraid to even imagine. We must first think through and work through this issue and only then spend money on the implementation of the project. I don’t argue, maybe he’s good. But don’t forget about motorists,” said Fedor Khoruntsev , a resident of Krasnodar, in a conversation with a FAN correspondent.
