Valley of Ghosts

The fabulous-looking rock figures are the result of weathering of volcanic formations on the southwestern slope of the Demerdzhi ridge. Conglomerates of the Upper Jurassic period represent the most ancient rocks that emerged on the surface of the Crimean land, the age of which, according to geologists, ranges from 800 million to 1 billion years.

Demerdzhi, whose height above sea level is 1240 meters, is a jagged mountain located north of Alushta and east of the Angarsk Pass. The mountain range consists of northern and southern parts, separated by a saddle. In 1894, the Southern Demerdzhi Massif collapsed. As a result, the Tatar settlement suffered, the inhabitants of which subsequently abandoned it.

In 1966 there was a second collapse. This phenomenon happened again in 1992. Accumulations of rock debris formed at the disaster site.

Large fragments of rocky debris are transformed by the imagination of travelers into fantastic images of fairy-tale creatures, which gave rise to calling the area the Valley of Ghosts.

Walk along the hiking routes of the Alushta Mountains

You will find a description of popular Crimean routes here: https://mycrimea.su/hiking/ If you decide to go on a serious hike in the mountains for a few days, then this link will help you: https://www.krimoved-library.ru/books /olinskiy-krim-putevoditel-spravochnik31.html

Marble Cave

If you go down from the top of Chatyr-Dag following the signs, you can get into another cave called Mramornaya. Entering it after visiting Emine-Bair-Khozar, you are surprised by the huge vaults of the halls. One of them is the height of a 9-story building and the size of a football field.

The guide will also introduce the names of each stalactite and invite tourists to take pictures near the stone called “Kiss”. In this place, stalactite and stalagmite occur together. If you make your way up the mountain in your car, do not rush, as the road is rocky and full of potholes; many cars are damaged on this climb. If you don’t have an SUV, then you can spare your car and leave it at the foot of the mountain, and go up on foot or ask for a bus that takes excursions to the caves.

Among the intellectuals who looked at the Alushta area for the construction of a dacha was the architect Alexey Nikolaevich Beketov. Villa “Marina” in Alushta and the Simferopol Drama Theater are famous buildings built according to his designs. And, of course, when planning his own dacha, the architect did his best - it is considered a monument.

The house is decorated in Moorish style and made from local materials. Even if you are not familiar with Beketov’s work, you will love this cozy corner with access to the sea.

Sounds like a great name, isn't it? The museum itself, located in the basement of the Church of St. Nicholas of Myra, makes no less an impression: the visitor finds himself on board a sunken ship, walks through its rooms and holds, watches videos describing sea shipwrecks.

Step by step you will be shown photographs, wrecks of ships and their equipment. You will be completely immersed in the atmosphere of the inevitable collapse in the depths of the sea with the help of documentary chronicles, archival videos and the interior: the walls seem to be overgrown with algae, and you are walking on the seabed.

After such a gloomy but alluring exhibition, it’s so nice to come out of the dungeon into the sunlight and see the quiet and calm blue sea.

The writer built his house twice: the first time in 1905, having acquired a plot in the vicinity of Alushta, and the second time after the war, when, returning from Germany, he found ruins, a destroyed archive and library, and a cut-down garden.

Restoring the house and park took about two years, and now we see the museum in the form that the writer left us.

House-museum of Shmelev I.S.

Be afraid of your desires - they may come true. This quote perfectly reflects the life of the Russian writer in Alushta. For many years he longed to build himself a house in Crimea, and when he acquired the plot and began construction, Russia was torn apart by civil war.

As a result, Shmelev was forced to emigrate to Europe, and the four years spent at his much-coveted dacha in Crimea became a nightmare for him and formed the basis for his work “The Sun of the Dead.”

Jur-Jur waterfall

Address: Alushta, Generalskoye village.

The sights of Alushta are represented by many natural beauties. Not far from the city, in the picturesque, wooded Khapkhal gorge, there is the deepest waterfall in Crimea - Dzhur-Dzhur. Its height is about 16 meters, formed by the Eastern Ulu-Uzen River. Translated from Turkic languages, the name of the waterfall means “murmuring”.

Jur-Jur waterfall is a popular tourist destination. Next to it there is a cave 750 meters long with the same name. If you go up from the waterfall, you can see three natural bowls with clear water. According to legend, each of these bowls has healing and magical properties: if you take a bath in the first, all sins will be forgiven, the second bath will give you youth and health, and the third will give you good luck in love. It is not surprising that there are always a lot of people who want to take a dip here, despite the fact that the water is very cold - no more than 10˚C.

Where to taste delicious dishes

The largest concentration of catering outlets awaits tourists along the embankment. There is an establishment for every taste and income, from pretentious to small eateries and cafes. Fish and coffee cooked on hot sand are especially appreciated by lovers. The most affordable canteens on the street. Embankment 6, Khromykh 25 "A". Cafes with a pleasant variety, including a children's menu, are “Golden Fish”, “Barabulya Bar”. For a full lunch in a pleasant atmosphere, the restaurants “Lesnoy”, “Vodoley” and the cafe “Vstrecha” are suitable.

In Alushta, interesting places for leisure are found literally at every step, so your vacation turns out to be full of impressions, vivid photographs as a keepsake and an amazing feeling of unity with nature under the vast sky of Crimea.
