First day in Syktyvkar

Syktyvkar does not amaze with historical and architectural sights, but it has a special flavor and style. The ends of ordinary five-story buildings on Kommunisticheskaya Street are decorated with panels; at every step you can come across national motifs.

The airport is located within the city, so you can start your walking tour right away. Leaving the building, see the first attraction - the monument “Dawn over Chukotka ”. The main acquaintance with the city can be continued on Stefanovskaya Square. The place is cozy and crowded; there are other interesting places nearby:

  • Communist street;
  • monument "Mourning Warrior";
  • platform under the clock;
  • Kirovsky Park;
  • Fire Tower;
  • Stephen's Cathedral.

There are many interesting art objects and sculptures on the streets of the northern city. To remember the days spent in the capital of Komi, tourists take photographs at the monument to boots, against the backdrop of the Horseshoe, at the sculpture of the Serpent Gorynych, next to the Wedding tree. All places for photo sessions are on the tourist map of the city.

Parks, streets and buildings

Fire Tower

Address: st. Sovetskaya, 9

The “fire tower” project was developed in 1900 by Vologda architect Ivan Ivanovich Pavlov. Already in 1907, the second floor of the building was leased to the local treasury.

Now the architectural monument is located in the old part of Syktyvkar. The city's active fire station is also located here, as well as a small museum.

There is an opinion that a fire tower brings special luck in marriage. You just need to visit it or take a photo on the porch.

Kirov Park

The largest recreational area in the city is the Kirov Park. It was opened on June 18, 1934 and was initially positioned more as a small garden. And at the beginning of the 20th century, the fire department even used it for their own needs - walking horses.

The narrowest alley in the city (and perhaps in the world) is a gap between the houses, where no one can set foot. As conceived by the authors, this lane was intended specifically for representatives of the local flora - mushrooms!

Second day in Syktyvkar

The second day is worth dedicating to the city’s museums or going to the Finno-Ugric Ethnocultural Park . Both routes are popular with tourists, but museum exhibitions can be seen while walking around the capital of Komi, and you need to drive at least an hour to the ethnopark.

Sights of the Finno-Ugric Ethnopark

This cultural park is located in a village with the unusual name Yb. It’s not difficult to get to it; the Vyatka federal highway passes nearby, but it’s difficult to see all the local attractions in one day:

  • dinosaur remains;
  • underground city;
  • holy springs;
  • moose farm;
  • excursion to the village of Yb.

Fans of active recreation will not be bored in the ethnopark. In winter, they ride cheesecakes, ice skates, and go on ski trips. In spring, summer and autumn they play Sami football and have fun at the Vorsa Tui rope park.

Those who prefer educational tourism do not get bored either. At the master classes they teach many things, for example, making dolls-amulet, musical instruments, baking rye shangi, weaving souvenirs from bast.

The National Museum of the Komi Republic is the first in the Top 3 cultural attractions of Syktyvkar, which can be seen in 1-2 days. The National Geological Museum is no less popular, located in the building of the Institute of Geology. An extensive collection of minerals and fossil animal bones can be viewed on your own; staff provide visitors with a map of the exhibitions.

Not every city has a Forest Museum , but the capital of Komi does. A tour of it will be a great end to the second day.

We also recommend visiting the regions neighboring Komi, where you can get acquainted with both city and natural attractions. This:

  • Arkhangelsk region (with its center in the city of Arkhangelsk),
  • Kirov region (and Kirov, respectively),
  • Perm region (and Perm)
  • Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug (center - Khanty-Mansiysk).

Letter, calendar and shanga: what monuments are missing in Syktyvkar

There are many monuments in the capital of the Komi Republic. But is it enough to reflect the national culture and attract the attention of tourists?

What can Syktyvkar boast of? Monument to the letter ö, fishing calendar and monument to I.P. Morozov, monument to I.A. Kuratov, monument to Viktor Savin.

The monument to the letter “Ӧ” was created by sculptor Alexander Vyborov and opened in 2011. The monument can be seen near the Komi Culture Center. Residents of the city jokingly called the monument “a monument to the washing machine.” But it really is similar. In 2015, a sign was installed on which it is written that the monument was erected on the initiative of the Komi Voityr MOU.

The letter Ӧ is the 18th letter of the Komi alphabet. It appears in many words of the Komi language; some jokingly call it the main letter of the Komi alphabet. It is noteworthy that back in the middle of the 18th century it was used by Gerard Miller to write Komi words.

The letter Ӧ is not only in the Komi alphabet. It is also found in the Udmurt, Mari, Khanty, Shor, Khakass and Gorno-Altai languages. Therefore, we can say that such a monument is of great importance for different peoples.

The fishing calendar was also established for a reason. In the center of Syktyvkar. It is believed that Komi hunters used to use the fishing calendar. He indicated in what period who could be hunted. The New Year was counted from March 21, the day of the vernal equinox. Instead of days, there are 9 periods of this or that animal.

The hunters knew that if you go hunting at the wrong time, you might anger the spirit of Parma. Therefore, game animals were revered and gifts were brought. Entering the forest, the hunter greeted the spirit of this forest, left gifts (the skin of an animal or a treat), and then thanked him so that good luck would continue to accompany him. The fishing calendar had a sacred meaning - the same as the forest itself.

Now residents and guests of the capital like to calculate their totem animal by their date of birth.

The older generation remembers Ivan Pavlovich Morozov very well, whose monument stands in the Kirov park next to the house-museum of Ivan Morozov. The monument was opened on August 22, 2021 on the 100th anniversary of the Komi Republic. The personality of the politician is now studied in schools during history lessons of the Komi region.

Ivan Pavlovich Morozov was a participant in the Great Patriotic War, at the age of 19 he was awarded the medal “For Military Merit”, an active party leader, a deputy of the Supreme Council of the USSR of the 7th-11th convocations, and a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. And the monument to Morozov is also of particular importance for the capital of the Komi Republic.

Monuments to Ivan Kuratov and Viktor Savin are monuments to all national literature in their person. Ivan Alekseevich Kuratov - the first Komi poet, scientist, linguist, was engaged in translating works of Russian and Western European writers into the Komi language.

Viktor Savin is a Komi playwright, founder of the drama theater, author of the words and music of the anthem of the Komi Republic. The monument to Ivan Kuratov is located on Theater Square, and also near the Syktyvkar Humanitarian Pedagogical College named after I.A. Kuratov’s bust was installed at 14 Oktyabrsky Prospekt. The monument to Victor Savin can be found near the building of the Drama Theater named after Victor Savin.

In my opinion, the city lacks monuments, sculptures dedicated to figures of the Komi Republic, heroes of the Great Patriotic War, traditions, and interesting thematic monuments.

For example, by analogy with the Udmurt dumplings, you can erect a monument to the Komi Shanga. After all, this is one of the traditional, tasty and popular dishes among residents and guests of Syktyvkar, Komi. They love Shanga very much! The international gastronomic festival “ShangaFest” is held annually, where you can undoubtedly try shangi. Shangi is made with cottage cheese, berries, potatoes, fish, buckwheat, wheat porridge, onions and eggs.

By the way, shangis are made not only in the Komi Republic. Residents from the White Sea to the Ob, but especially in the Arkhangelsk region, the Cis-Urals, the Middle Urals and Trans-Urals can boast of such a product.

The monument will immediately attract attention. It can be made “tasty”, that is, presented as a real huge shanga. You come up and want to take a bite, but it turns out to be a monument.

Monuments and sculptures dedicated to the Komi Republic should be “alive,” bright, and colorful. You look from afar, some woman is standing in Komi national costume. And you come closer and see that it is a sculpture. Already interesting.

Monuments illustrating the culture and history of the Komi Republic can not only make the city more beautiful, but also attract more tourists and improve the appearance of the city.
