The best attractions of Tambov with photos and descriptions

Tambov, famous thanks to the well-known Tambov wolf, in fact, has something else to charm tourists. The city is full of ancient attractions that have been perfectly preserved to this day - miraculously, all wars and fires bypassed the Old Center of Tambov.

Here you will find delightful temples, cozy and majestic mansions and the beautiful nature of the Tsna River valley. In this article we have collected for you information about the best attractions of Tambov with their photos and detailed descriptions.

City architecture

Tambov boasts many architectural attractions , of which several ancient temples stand out.

One of the most famous Tambov religious buildings is the Ascension Cathedral , located on the territory of the Ascension Monastery of the 17th century. The cathedral itself was built a little later - at the end of the 18th century. The temple is very unusual and colorful, its appearance a bit reminiscent of a fairytale tower, and its bright 70-meter bell tower attracts attention. By the way, the gilded dome on the bell tower appeared quite recently - in 2012.

You will find the bright multi-colored cathedral at st. Moskovskaya, 33.

No less popular among tourists is
the Holy Trinity Church , located on the street. K. Marx. In 1642, a wooden church was built on the site where the temple is now located. The building acquired its stone appearance in 1771. Unfortunately, the temple was later badly damaged in a fire, so in the 1840s. construction began again. The new stone temple turned out to be very beautiful, largely preserving the style of national architecture. The temple was decorated with five magnificent domes. Unfortunately, during the Soviet Union, the temple suffered a new misfortune - it, like many others, was closed and completely dismantled. And only in 2008, using historical records, they tried to recreate the temple.

Museums of Tambov

One of the most educational museums in the city is the Kirsanovsky Museum of Local Lore , located in an unsightly 19th-century building. The museum was opened back in 1923 , and since then it has housed an extensive collection of photographs and historical exhibits telling about the rich history of the city.

The Aseev Estate museum complex is unusually beautiful . Being a branch of Peterhof, the estate shows the external and internal appearance of the ancient palace. Here you will see Aseev's office, reception room, formal dining room, white hall, antechamber, sofa room, boudoir and men's room. Monuments of Tambov

Judging by the large number of different monuments, the local people respect both their history and outstanding people. Probably one of the most popular places for tourists in Tambov is the monument to the famous Tambov Wolf . There are now two such monuments in Tambov: one of them is located on Rasskazovskoye Highway at the entrance to the city, the second is on the territory of the “Hotel”. The Rasskazovsky wolf is made from the trunk of a huge oak tree, which is over 200 years old. His figure rises 3 meters and looks very harmonious against the background of the forest. An unknown saying “The Tambov wolf is your comrade” is carved into the wolf’s paws. The second monument expresses the good-natured nature of the city symbol. The wolf figure lying peacefully on the mountain exudes calm, good nature and hospitality. A phrase of a slightly different nature is cut out here: “When you give people joy, the Tambov wolf is your comrade!”

Walking tour of Tambov

There is no need to invent a special route for walking around the sights of Tambov. The center is located between the station and the Tsna River, and it is this path that is worth taking (in order not to bother yourself, you can take trolleybuses No. 3 and 5 to the Lenin Square stop). If you walk, go straight along International Street. On the left side we will have the Pension Fund (No. 37), the yellow building of Tambov State University (TSU) named after. Derzhavina (No. 33, 1911, with traces of a new restoration) and the registry office mansion (No. 27). On Lenin Square itself you will be greeted by one of the most interesting monuments to Lenin in Russia (1967, sculptor A. Bondarenko, architect A. Kulikov), distinguished by a caricatured and inadequate pose with a hand thrown forward. On the left you see the faceless blunt square of the regional scientific library named after. A.S. Pushkin (No. 17) and across the road - the former Assembly of the Nobility, and now the Drama Theater named after. A.V. Lunacharsky (No. 15), founded by Gavriil Derzhavin in 1786, when the poet was the governor of Tambov, and on the right is the former Mikhailov Hotel, or House of Mercy (No. 22, 1906). The square also houses a gigantic House of Soviets (regional administration), a modern plastic replica of a bank, and a park with fountains behind the monument abuts the building of the music college (Sovetskaya St., 87, 1902, architect A. Svirchevsky) - such a hit was created in its depths , like the “Farewell of the Slav” march, when its author Vasily Agapkin studied here in 1912-1915.

Then, past the house with the Tambov hotel and restaurant, we come out onto the Tsna embankment - the most beautiful place in the city. The embankment is not very shady, but two-level, with neatly laid out paths, shaped benches and elaborate urns. The small and narrow Tsna is a very picturesque river; on its other bank there are flooded meadows and forests that are used for garden plots. At the embankment we turn right and walk along Tsna. The Kazan Monastery (Gorky St., 3) is already visible, whose cathedral (1791-1796, provincial baroque) was built on the model of the Sarov Monastery, and it was here, according to legend, that Seraphim of Sarov was ordained as hieromonk. The monastery was founded in 1667, it was the residence of the bishop, in addition to the cathedral, the St. John the Baptist Church (1794), the bishop's house with the house church, the fraternal building and the consistory have been preserved. In the park near the monastery there is a monument to Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya (1947, sculptor Matvey Manizer) and on the embankment itself - to Sergei Rachmaninov (2006, sculptor A.I. Rukavishnikov). Further down the road is the Church of the Intercession (1763), designed, like all churches in Tambov, in the same blue-blue tone, and it is accompanied by a monument to the Russian peasant (2007, sculptor Vasily Ostrikov). If you go up Kronstadtskaya Street here, you will also find a Catholic church (1898-1903, Kronstadtskaya Street, 14), which was built by exiled Poles.

We slowly walk further along the Tsna along its shady banks and eventually come to the house of the former manufacturer Mikhail Aseev (1903-1904, eclecticism, Gogol St., 1), in which a cardiological sanatorium is located. You can enter the territory of the sanatorium park freely; in its center there is a patriarchal oak tree (four girths, 600 years old), you just need to enter not from the embankment, but from the parallel Gogol Street.

Here you can break your walk, take trolleybus No. 1 or 6 on Sovetskaya Street and return to the city center. Sovetskaya stretches throughout the city (6.5 km) and ends in the northern part. If you wish, you can go out along the way and visit the house-museum of Georgy Chicherin (Sovetskaya St., 63, Kronstadtskaya stop) - in an ancient estate restored with siding, where in 1877-1886. The childhood of the Soviet People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs has passed. Not far away (Sovetskaya St., 51), on the territory of which there is a room-Museum of Alexander Lodygin, the inventor of the incandescent light bulb. Another private Denisov Museum (chairs, samovars, candlesticks, chests of drawers, everything can be touched with your hands) is located on the street. Gorky, 49.
