Pushchino: the science city where the search engine and “blue blood” were invented

Pushchino is a city (since 1966) in the Moscow region, Russia; one of the scientific centers of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 1962 (according to Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 1855 r. dated July 7) it has the status of a Scientific Center for Biological Research, since 2005 it has the status of Science City. Located on the right bank of the Oka River at the confluence of the Lyubozhikha River, approximately 120 km south of Moscow and 20 km from Serpukhov, the city borders on all sides with the Serpukhov municipal district. Opposite Pushchino, on the left bank of the Oka, is the Prioksko-Terrasny Biosphere Reserve. Pushchino is divided into 5 microdistricts: AB, V, G, D and FIAN.

Sometimes unofficially, in order to avoid confusion with other settlements of the same name, the name Pushchino-on-Oka is used.

The population of the city is 20.3 thousand people. (2010).

Known as a biological research center. The city is home to 9 research institutes and 1 observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Pushchino: the science city where the search engine and “blue blood” were invented

There are many interesting cities in the Moscow region that attract tourists with excursions to ancient temples, ancient estates and unusual museums. And there are those where they don’t offer excursions, but by visiting them you discover a lot of interesting things. One of these cities where science coexists with mysticism is Pushchino.

Pushchino “Bald Mountain” Most Muscovites and residents of the Moscow region know Pushchino as a scientific town and a place where you can have extreme fun - fly on an airplane. But few know that this small city, with a population of just over 20 thousand people, inspires not only scientists and extreme sports enthusiasts, but also makes writers soar in the clouds. If you arrive in Pushchino in the morning, then in the fog you may not see a residential area - only the horizon line, because the city stands on the high bank of the Oka. Here, 120 kilometers from Moscow, you find a source of inspiration. It turns out that this is a place for artists, photographers and writers! A picturesque panorama of the Prioksko-Terrasny Biosphere Reserve opens from the bank of the Oka. Here, on the river bank, you can arrange meditation sessions. I can’t even believe that the city is in full swing with life: scientific discoveries are being made, unique projects are being developed and works of genius are being created. The Academy town began to be built up a little more than half a century ago, only in 1956.

Residents of Pushchino say that “Bald Mountain” was the name of this area back then, a center not only of science, but also of magical power. There are still streams and springs near the residential areas, which, according to old-timers, have a healing effect. It was not for nothing that Bulgakov sent his Margarita to the witches’ Sabbath in this place, on Bald Mountain, says resident Irina Gryaznova. If you go for a walk around the city, Khrushchev’s architecture is unlikely to impress anyone - standard red brick five-story buildings. But the unusual territorial layout is surprising and even disorienting out of habit - instead of the usual streets, the city is divided into microdistricts. Several years ago, the mayor introduced a system that was more understandable to everyone, for example, Institutskaya Street appeared, along which all the main research institutes are located. And if you walk along the main street - Nauki Avenue, then you can get confused in dividing houses into microdistricts. As Irina Gryaznova explains, the unusual layout of the city is due to the fact that the green zone runs from the outskirts to the center, separating the residential area from the institutions. So that students, leaving the buildings, pass through pine, linden and birch alleys. Pushchino also has its own “Arbat” - Prospekt Nauki. This main street of the city is also pedestrian. In fact, it is much longer than Moscow's Arbat and runs throughout Pushchino. "Blue Bloods" and Rambler

However, the mystical aura is not Pushchino’s calling card. This city has gained worldwide fame thanks to its scientific discoveries. After all, it was here in the late 70s that an employee of the Institute of Biophysics, Professor Felix Beloyartsev, invented perftoran - a drug that can replace human blood. It is most often called "blue blood" because it has a blue-white color. Thus, among scientists in Russia and abroad, Pushchino is known as the largest center for scientific research in the field of biology. Here, in 1968, radio astronomers V. Vitkevich, Yu. I. Alekseev, V. F. Zhuravlev and Yu. P. Shitov discovered the first Pushchino pulsar. At different times, outstanding scientists worked here - academicians G. M. Frank, G. K. Scriabin, Yu. A. Ovchinnikov, A. A. Baev, A. S. Spirin, V. A. Kovde. In the science city, and Pushchino received this title in 2005, there are 9 research institutes and the RAS observatory.

This is also where the legs of the Runet grow. Already in 1991, a group of advanced programmers in Pushchino began creating a local city network. The network was quickly brought to Moscow, and then it entered the world Internet. Thus, this company, under the leadership of programmer Dmitry Kryukov, created the first IP channel in the country, which went beyond Moscow. And already in 1996, the search engine Rambler was created. Despite the fact that by this time about 50 Russian sites already existed, this search engine found its niche in the Runet by introducing new projects, for example, the Rambler Top 100 rating classifier. Cinematic estate The science city also has its own monument of architecture and landscape art of the 18th century - the Pushchino estate, which has been repeatedly depicted in Russian cinema. The owners of this estate at different times were the Artsibashevs, Ofrosimovs, Losevs. In addition, the name of the composer Alexander Alyabyev is associated with the estate. According to Irina Gryaznova, the estate is now in a deplorable state. During the Great Patriotic War there was a hospital there, then stables were located. If it is restored, wonderful excursions can be organized there, the resident believes. A film based on Alexei Tolstoy’s novel “The Lame Master” was shot in this estate at the beginning of the 20th century, and in the 70s Nikita Mikhalkov filmed his film “An Unfinished Piece for a Mechanical Piano” here. As Irina Gryaznova says, for the filming of the film, various sets were installed on the territory of the estate, and the figures of lions that frame the estate building were still preserved at that time. The fountain was also restored especially for filming. Extreme entertainment Not far from Academgorodok there is the Bolshoye Gryzlovo airfield - one of the most popular places in the Moscow region, where you can fly airplanes and jump with a parachute. Despite the fact that there is only one runway, several companies organize airplane flights at the Bolshoye Gryzlovo airfield. As Irina Ravilova, who recently gave such an extreme gift to her boyfriend, said, you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Pushchino from a bird’s eye view. Especially if you choose the option of flying with loops and other aerobatic maneuvers, the girl says. On board a small Yak-52 aircraft, a tourist occupies the co-pilot's seat, is firmly strapped in and sent into the sky.
