Climbing the volcano

Elizovo is a city in Kamchatka. It is located on the Avachi River, three dozen kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The city received its name from the surname of the commander of a partisan detachment that operated on the peninsula during the Civil War. Yelizovo is well known to tourists as an airport and transit point on the way to volcanoes and thermal springs.

Warmer in summer, colder in winter

The village of Staroostrozhnoe was founded in 1848. The first military governor of Kamchatka at that time was Vasily Zavoiko. He became famous for skillfully repelling the attack of the French and British during the so-called Peter and Paul Defense. The battle took place in 1854. In honor of the winner, the village of Staroostrozhnoe was renamed the village of Zavoiko. The settlement bore this name until 1923, after which it began to be called Elizovo.

Elizovo is located next to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, but the climate in the cities is strikingly different. It is warmer here in summer, but winter comes earlier. This is due to the distance from the ocean shore. Thanks to the warm summer, cherries, plums, and apples are successfully grown here. For a long time, residents have been growing vegetables.

In July, the thermometer can rise to 30 degrees. The average temperature in the summer months is 15 degrees. The coldest months are January and February. During this period, the average temperature is minus 9 degrees. There are also twenty-degree frosts. Most precipitation falls between October and March. The peak occurs in November.

Elizovo airfield, the air gateway to Kamchatka, received reconstructed airfield infrastructure facilities at the end of 2014: an apron for boarding passengers on planes and taxiways 4, 7, 9. The planes were moved to their regular places in December 2014.

The Ministry of Transport clarifies that the commissioning date of the artificial runway (RWY) of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Yelizovo Airport and the facility as a whole is planned for the second quarter of 2015.

At the same time, construction and installation work on the reconstruction of the runway and all taxiways has also been completed. In particular, the concrete work was completed in full, and the marking of the coating was completed. The construction readiness of the facility is approaching 100%. The first stage of airport reconstruction has been put into operation.

The runway cannot yet be put into operation due to the fact that lighting and radio equipment has not yet been installed on it. In addition, the commissioning of a runway at the Elizovo airfield is impossible today, including due to errors in the design - the interests of the aviation of the Russian Navy were not taken into account. Currently, the customer (Federal Air Transport Agency) and the general designer (Lenaeroproekt) have made adjustments to the project.

At the command and control tower (CPC) of the airport in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, interior finishing work is underway. The control tower is the most important airport reconstruction project today, since without it it is impossible to start flights from the new runway.

More than 80% of the total amount of work on the reconstruction of the airport has already been completed: a runway, taxiways, and a passenger apron have been built.

The airport has been covered in snow for several days in a row, and a more powerful snowstorm is expected over the weekend.

All departing aircraft take a “lap of honor” on the apron and are doused with anti-icing liquid.

Construction of an emergency rescue station is underway, noise barriers and airport fencing are being installed, and a patrol road is being built. Deputy Head of the Main Directorate for the Construction of Roads and Airfields under Spetsstroy of Russia, Head of the Airfield Facilities Complex Pavel Chernukhin assured: “The enterprise knows its obligations and strives to fulfill them as quickly as possible. With the onset of the warm season, construction at the airfield intensifies. We will complete all work at the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky airport in 2015.”

In April 2015, the Kamchatka aviation enterprise ordered a project for the construction of a new terminal at the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky airport, the construction of which could begin as early as May next year.

The capacity on domestic lines of the new terminal is 400 people per hour, on international lines - 250 people per hour. It is expected that the design will be completed by February 2016, after which an investor will be identified. It is not yet known exactly how much he will have to invest in the new airport building. However, the airport can enter the Kamchatka priority development area, which will give it various benefits.

Volcanoes, thermal baths and skiing

Tourism, along with fishing and agriculture, is considered the main sector of the city's economy. The Nizhne-Paratunsky thermal springs are very popular. Since mineral water has healing properties, there is a large balneological resort in the village of Paratunka. Local water has a temperature of 42 to 61 degrees. The resort includes 30 recreation centers and hotels, as well as the Paratunka sanatorium. In addition to thermal water, sulfide silt mud from Lake Utinoe is used for medicinal purposes.

And the Timonovskie springs are located along the banks of the Pad Timonovskaya River on the territory of the zoological reserve. There are 15 griffins here - this is the name given to the outlets of groundwater from the aquifer. The bromine content in the water is increased. You should be careful because there are sources with dangerous arsenic content. Timonovsky springs have the status of a natural monument of regional significance.

In Elizovo there is a visitor center of the Volcanoes of Kamchatka Natural Park, where tourists are offered many interesting excursions. There are a total of 33 walking and driving routes! They are laid through the territory of the Nalychevo, Klyuchevskoy, Yuzhno-Kamchatsky and Bystrinsky natural parks. There are both seasonal and year-round excursion options. The length of the routes is from 4 to 190 kilometers.

In Nalychevo Park you can visit the Talovsky hot springs, Dzendzur volcano, Aag Narzans, a waterfall on the Shumnaya River, Vershinskoye Lake and other interesting natural sites. The names of the routes in Klyuchevskoy Park speak for themselves - “In the footsteps of recent eruptions”, “Valley of Volcanoes”, “Fire and Ice”. The South Kamchatsky Park offers excursions to the Pacific Ring and to the Mutnovsky volcano. And in the Bystrinsky park, tourists are taken to the Dygeren-Olengende volcano, Ichinsky volcano, lakes Ikar and Galyamaki.

The Mount Moroznaya ski resort operates in the Elizovsky district. It is located 7 kilometers from the regional center. There are five tracks on the slopes - from downhill to children's training. They are served by four rope tows and one chair lift. The altitude difference for skiing is about 770 meters. From the top you can see the Avachinsky, Kozelsky and Koryaksky volcanoes.

There are two museums in the city - local history and civil aviation of Kamchatka. Tourists certainly take pictures near the monument “Russia Begins Here.” Today it is the calling card of Yelizovo. The life-size sculptural composition of a mother bear with a bear cub looks impressive against the backdrop of three volcanoes. Near the monument there are signs to cities, as well as to Crimea, which is thousands and thousands of kilometers away from here. There is also a monument to partisan Georgy Elizov, after whom the city is named.

City `s history

The first settlement on the site of present-day Yelizovo was founded in the 17th century by the Itelmens; it was a small fort. When the Cossacks arrived in these places at the beginning of the next century, they developed difficult relations with the local residents, which led to clashes and bloodshed. The settlement was destroyed by the Cossacks, this was a response to the murder of their comrades by the Kamchadals, led by Ataman Antsiferov. These tragic events became the reason that the place began to be called the Old Fortress tract. For a long time no one settled here.

At the beginning of the 19th century, a small village was built in the Old Fortress, where a family of Russian settlers began to live. The village of the same name began with this settlement. Statistics from the mid-19th century already show the presence of four houses. All of them were occupied by members of the same family, the father lived in one house, and his sons with their wives and children lived in the rest. As people arrived in Kamchatka from mainland Russia, the village grew. By 1876, more than 80 people already lived here, and in the 20s of the twentieth century, 226.

The Old Ostrog (or Staroostrozhnoye) retained its name until 1897, when it was renamed the village of Zavoiko, in honor of the first Governor-General of Kamchatka, a remarkable man in all respects. It would be fair to continue to bear this name, but during the Civil War, dramatic events took place in Kamchatka. On the banks of the Avacha there were bloody battles for Soviet power, a detachment of red partisans was led by Georgy Elizov. He died. To perpetuate his memory, in 1924 the village of Zavoiko was renamed Yelizovo. Later a bust of the partisan commander was erected here.

The village residents were mainly engaged in fishing, hunting, and agriculture. But then it was not possible to make fishing in the Avacha River industrial. In addition, the area did not have a supply of timber. These circumstances caused the slow development of Yelizovo. But after Soviet power was established here, a plan was adopted to expand it. They began to develop the fishing industry, and in 1931 a collective farm was created. At the same time, the infrastructure was improved, such benefits of civilization as a bathhouse and telegraph appeared, a school was built, a store was opened, a club was created, where cultural and educational work began.

The status of Elizovo changed in 1964, it began to be called a workers' village, and in 1975 - a city. Fishing industry enterprises remain the main sector of the local economy, and agriculture also exists. Tourism is developing rapidly, which has already become a significant source of income for the region. Elizovo is located in a wonderful place where there are all opportunities for a varied recreation.
