Of course, most people have heard the name Gelendzhik at least once. This is a wonderful place that combines a cozy town and a famous resort area, which has gained great popularity and success among tourists. During the holiday season, you can never say that this place is empty. Many people come here every year, most of them not for the first time, they like it so much here. The population of Gelendzhik is very diverse, but they are always hospitable and happy to welcome vacationers to their city. It’s worth talking in more detail about this resort, talking about where it is located, its population, recreational features and attractions of the city.
Gelendzhik - general information
First, you need to consider general information about the city in order to better understand what we are talking about. So, Gelendzhik, as already mentioned, is a wonderful resort town. It is located in Russia, in the Krasnodar region. Its importance for the country is worth mentioning separately - in 2001 it was recognized as a resort of federal significance. It is located on the Black Sea coast.
Of course, in connection with this, all areas of tourism are actively developing here. Its popularity is also increasing every year; holidays in Gelendzhik are already becoming a tradition for many. The local nature fascinates all vacationers, since there is a mountain range nearby and stunning views of the sea.
The population of Gelendzhik, according to data for 2021, is about 72 thousand people. This will be discussed a little later.
Hospitals and medical services in Gelendzhik
The situation with medical services in Gelendzhik is the same as in many towns in the Krasnodar Territory - for any serious case you need to go to the doctors in Krasnodar. Or, as I heard, at least to Novorossiysk.
We only had personal experience of going to the hospital once. When we contacted the city clinic, we were told that the waiting list for the required service was 9 months in advance. Therefore, we used a private clinic in Gelendzhik, everything was decided on the same day.
In Gelendzhik there are several sanatoriums with medical centers with doctors of various specialties. They offer a variety of health and treatment procedures. Residents of the city, as well as vacationers, can use the services of these medical centers.

Where is the city?
Now it’s worth talking about the geographical location of this wonderful resort town. The city of Gelendzhik occupies a fairly large territory, its area is about 1925 hectares. The settlement is located near another famous city - Novorossiysk, just 25 kilometers southeast of it. Another landmark is the mountain range with the unusual name Markoth. The city is located right at the foot of this mountain.
Population of Gelendzhik - detailed information
So, the territory of the city and its location have been considered, and now it’s worth talking about such an important component as the population. As already noted, the number of residents of the city itself is about 72 thousand people. If we talk about the entire urban district, which is called the resort city of Gelendzhik, then its population has a much larger number of people - about 112 thousand people.
Interestingly, in recent years, since 2005, there has been a small but constant increase in population. However, there is no natural growth here; the number of people here increases only due to the attraction of seasonal work in the tourism industry, it is because of this that a significant number of people migrate here.

Employment
Of course, most of the people living in the city are employed in the resort and tourism business. Another well-developed area in the city, where a significant number of people work, is the sphere of public catering and trade, which is also explained by the great popularity of this resort place among vacationers.
However, the city has other developed industries besides those directly related to tourism. Mainly, construction and scientific fields can be distinguished among them. The city also has a food industry. Winemaking is especially popular here.
Attractions
Gelendzhik is famous for its large number of monuments. This is mainly a legacy of Soviet times. The total number of monuments and sculptures is about 20. There is one bust.
There are 3 water parks in the city: “Golden Bay”, “Dolphin”, “Behemoth”. There are 3 museums available for visiting.
There are many natural, historical and man-made attractions in the surrounding area. Among them are a forest of relict pine, dolmens, the Parus rock, waterfalls, a grove of relict juniper, and a large inscription “Gelendzhik” on the mountain opposite the city. In the city itself you can visit the Olympus recreation and entertainment park, the Roman Empire show park, the 70 Years of Victory park, a safari park, a city amusement park, and a dolphinarium.
Features of relaxation in this place
So, the basic facts about the territory, geographical location and population of the city were considered. Now it’s worth talking about some of the nuances associated with staying here. When going to the resorts of Gelendzhik, you need to know some of the features of a seaside holiday in these places. Firstly, it must be noted that local nature is not only beautiful and unusual, it has a positive effect on health. Here are magnificent groves of centuries-old pines; they saturate the air with useful substances and make it much cleaner, which undoubtedly has a beneficial effect on the body.
Another important point is that there are practically no operating industrial enterprises in the city, which also contributes to good air quality.
As for the sea, it is calm and quite clean in these places, compared to other areas, due to the fact that the resort is located in a bay. Therefore, tourists with children often choose a holiday in Gelendzhik; here you don’t have to worry about the safety of little vacationers.
Sea near Gelendzhik
To begin with, it is worth noting that the holiday season in these places lasts quite a long time. Tours to Gelendzhik are most popular between June and September. There is less chance of rainy days at this time. The swimming season here opens in May and lasts about six months. It usually ends in October.
The coastline in this area is flat and has more than 100 different beaches. Interestingly, the total length of the beaches is about 20 thousand meters. In the very center of the bay there is a large beach, which was created artificially. Its length is about a kilometer, and it also has a vast area of more than 5 hectares. Thus, the resort area is well developed to accommodate a large number of vacationers.
The transport network here is well developed; you can easily get to all areas of Gelendzhik. Basically, various buses run here.
Health resorts of Gelendzhik
Probably, many have heard that vacationing in these places not only gives you positive impressions, but, in some cases, is very good for your health. Indeed, there are special tours to Gelendzhik that are aimed specifically at treating or healing the body. The peculiarity of the resort is that there are a large number of mineral water springs nearby. There are both their deposits and self-flowing springs here. Their total number in the Gelendzhik region is more than 20. In addition to healing waters, special medicinal mud is used here to treat various diseases.
There are many sanatoriums and other health institutions in the city, where various diseases of the cardiovascular system, nervous system, respiratory system, endocrine system, etc. are treated.
Types of apartments and utilities in Gelendzhik
There are separate articles about public services in Gelendzhik and Krasnodar. Here I will give only some numbers for general understanding and comparison.
Tariffs for utility services in Gelendzhik (July 2019): cold water – 53.75 rubles/cubic meter, water disposal – 34.54 rubles/cubic meter, electric energy – 4.81 kW/h, garbage removal 102.29 rub/person
Tariffs for utility services in Krasnodar (July 2019): cold water – 38.71 rubles/cub.m, water disposal – 28.16 rubles/cub.m, electricity – 3.37 kW/h, garbage removal – 70, 6 rub/person
As can be seen from the above tariffs, in Gelendzhik they are higher than in Krasnodar. But in addition to the listed payments for consumed resources, there are also payments for residential premises, depending on the area of the premises. These payments in Krasnodar are higher than in Gelendzhik. And as a result, it turns out that the cost of utilities in Gelendzhik and Krasnodar is approximately the same. For a 1-room apartment in the summer you pay 2200-3000 rubles, and in the heating season - 3000-4000 rubles.
The price range depends on how hot water and heating are provided in the apartment. There are 2 types of apartments in Gelendzhik:
- Houses with a central gas supply, in which hot water and heating depend on an individual gas boiler. In such houses, the cost of utilities is lower, everyone turns on their own heating as needed, and there is always hot water when there is cold water. The disadvantage of such a system is that the gas boiler is located inside the apartment, usually in the kitchen, and it operates quite loudly. In general, a good quality gas boiler costs around 30-50 thousand rubles. During the 2 years that we spent in Gelendzhik, we lived in 2 such apartments, and the owners of both apartments were very worried about the boilers and their operation. One day our boiler stopped heating water, a part needed to be replaced and it cost the apartment owner 5,000 rubles.
- Houses with fully centralized heating and hot water - in such houses the cost of utilities is higher than in gasified ones, sometimes significantly. Heating and water are supplied according to a citywide schedule.
Gas boiler in the kitchen in Gelendzhik
Also, when choosing an apartment in Gelendzhik, you need to take into account the presence of a water storage tank in the house. Old houses and high-rise buildings usually do not have a tank. But many new buildings up to 6 floors high have a water storage tank in the basement. But, as it turned out, even this needs to be clarified, since some houses have a water storage tank, but its size is not enough for everyone to have water all day.
Some of our friends live on the street. Solntsedarskaya, it is 6 km from the center of Gelendzhik. They say that in their area the water is not turned off in the summer and they do not have any problems with water. So when choosing an apartment, this issue needs to be clarified in detail.
The city's attractions
As you know, the city of Gelendzhik has a rich history. It is not surprising that over the long period of the city’s existence, many cultural monuments have appeared here. When going on a trip to this resort, many people want to see the sights in order to become better acquainted with the history and culture of the city.
To begin with, it is best to explore the center of Gelendzhik; here you can walk along the pleasant and quiet streets and feel the atmosphere of this sunny city.
There are also several interesting museums located here. The first is a local history museum. It is definitely worth a visit, because in the museum you can learn a lot of interesting things about the history of these lands. The second object is the House-Museum of the writer Vladimir Korolenko. Here you can get acquainted with his life and work.
In Gelendzhik there are many monuments dedicated to famous people and various important events, for example, a monument dedicated to the bicentenary of A. S. Pushkin, a monument to M. Yu. Lermontov (nearby there is a boulevard dedicated to the poet), a monument to V. I. Lenin and others. You can often see city residents and tourists near the monument to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War.
It will also be interesting to see the local architecture; it is represented by various churches, for example, the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, the Holy Transfiguration Church and others are located here.

City `s history
The territories of present-day Gelendzhik have been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced, for example, by dolmens (funeral structures made of stone slabs), which, as the local population says, have mystical powers.
The name of the city has several versions of its origin. According to the first version, “Gelendzhik” means “white bride” in Turkic. This version is very loved by the local population. In 2010, the sculpture “White Bride” was installed on the central embankment of the city, which, by the way, is the longest sea embankment in the world. The second version of the origin of the name of the resort refers us to the Turks, who called the city “White Poplar”. Scientists insist that this is an Adyghe name and it is translated as “small pasture.”
In 1900, the first sanatorium was opened on the territory of Gelendzhik, and in 1907, the then former village of Gelendzhik received resort status. In 1915, Gelendzhik turned from a village into a city. During the Great Patriotic War, the resort town of Gelendzhik received the wounded. During the war years, the city suffered significantly, but was later restored and in 1970 acquired the status of an all-Union resort.

This is largely due to the favorable climate.
The seasonal nature of the resort affects the city's economy. The main contribution to the economy of Gelendzhik is made by the resort and tourism complex, the share of income of which is 40%. How to get to the resort?
So, information about Gelendzhik, the features of recreation in these places, local attractions and much more were examined in detail. Now it’s worth talking about how you can get to the resort. There are several options for traveling to Gelendzhik, you can always choose the most suitable one.
The first and most common way to get to the city is by rail. The train does not go to Gelendzhik, but in this case it is convenient to get to Novorossiysk by it. From there, from the railway station, you can get to Gelendzhik by bus or taxi, which won’t take much time. Travel time by train from Moscow to Novorossiysk is approximately 1.5 days. Most people who want to travel to Gelendzhik in June usually buy tickets well in advance of the trip as it is the most popular month.
The second travel option is to go by personal vehicle. This method is also very convenient, since in this case it becomes possible to independently move around the city and its environs, as well as explore various sights. To get there from Moscow, you need to follow the M4 Don highway. The distance between the two cities is about 1518 kilometers. The trip will take about 18 hours.
Walking route through the city center
Whatever time of year you come to Gelendzhik, be sure to choose a day to just stroll around the city. Its central promenade, the magnificent Embankment, will provide you with as much as 14 km of travel. Along the way you will meet almost all the city’s “business cards”.

It is convenient to start your walk from the Central City Beach . There is an excellent observation deck here, and if you get hungry, there are restaurants serving all the cuisines of the world, it seems.
A stone's throw from the entrance to the beach is another city attraction, the Oceanarium . The inhabitants of the deep sea can be seen without diving into the sea with scuba gear.
Coral reefs, exotic fish of warm seas, piranhas and lobsters - if you want to make a sea “around the world”, then this is the place for you.
All couples in love should take a walk to the “Lovers” fountain . The young man and the girl, hugging each other, froze on the globe, which floats above the streams of water. The sculpture was installed near the local registry office and is popular with newlyweds.
From here you can already see the city's Cathedral and the Church of the Holy Ascension . Its history began in the middle of the 19th century, with a small wooden church. Later, Gelendzhik received the status of a city, and it needed a solid stone temple. The consecration of the new cathedral took place in 1909, and much later, after decades of oblivion, the temple again opened its doors to parishioners. You can come here every day and see beautiful icons and brightly painted ceilings.
Sculpture White Bride

It is impossible to miss the symbol of the city - the sculpture White Bride . A slender girl in a wedding dress personifies Gelendzhik; loosely translated from ancient Turkic, its name sounds like “white bride.” Since 2010, the beauty has been smiling at local residents and guests of the resort; if you want to take a photo with her, most likely you will have to stand in line.
We are approaching Lermontovsky Boulevard . The beautiful pedestrian area is marked by a monument to the poet and an elegant snow-white arch. You need to come back here in the evening, when the fountain's music and lights turn on. Guests will be treated to a vibrant musical show.
Walking further along Lermontovsky Boulevard, you will come across the sculpture Old Lighthouse . Nearby there is another unusual landmark of the city, the beacon lighthouse . It has been lighting the way for ships in Gelendzhik Bay since the end of the 19th century. In the 30s of the last century it was repaired and updated, the kerosene lamp was replaced with an electric one. Nowadays it is not only a lighthouse, but also an architectural monument.
This concludes your walk through the city's attractions. An excellent end to the day will be a ride up the Olympus cable car to the observation deck at +640 meters above sea level. Olympus Park is located at the foot of the Markhot ridge, as well as on the second, “high” level.
Is it possible to get to Gelendzhik by plane?
In addition to the listed ways to get to this popular resort, there is another option. You can fly to the city by plane. There are flights from Moscow, St. Petersburg and other major Russian cities. There is an airport in Gelendzhik, but some tourists prefer to fly to Anapa, followed by travel to Gelendzhik. Flights from Moscow usually depart every day. Flight time is 2 hours 20 minutes. This method will be convenient for those who have a short time allocated for vacation, which would be a shame to waste on the road to the resort.
Cons of Gelendzhik
Gelendzhik is a small and rather cramped town, and if in winter it has its own charm and charm, in summer it turns into a problem. Thousands of tourists crowd into this small square, and the city is not at all suitable for this - the roads are narrow, the sidewalks are narrow.
City services often cannot cope with such a load; for example, garbage collection in the summer is very poor, and garbage containers are constantly filled up.

Accumulated trash before going down to the beach in summer
People on the ground, for example, cashiers at bus stations or sellers at markets, also cannot withstand such stress and begin to behave at least unfriendly, at most rude. Living in such an environment becomes not very pleasant, but all this lasts only 3 months.
Lack of water in summer
In Gelendzhik there is a problem with water in the summer, not in the sea, of course, but in the water supply. There is not enough water and with the beginning of the tourist season they begin to supply it to houses according to a schedule - several hours in the morning and several hours in the evening; there is no water during the day.
Such water outages do not affect most tourists, since hotels and guest houses, as a rule, install special water storage tanks that ensure the availability of water all day long.
The same reserve water tanks are installed in the basements of some new buildings, so residents of these houses also do not have interruptions in water supply. But there are many apartments where there is no water during the day during the summer. This problem has existed for a very long time and it is unknown whether it will ever be solved. The city authorities change every now and then, some changes are introduced, but no one has yet been able to solve anything with water.
In addition to water shortages in Gelendzhik, there are also power outages in the summer. We didn't have power many times during the summer of 2021, and once there was no power for almost 2 days.
Some people solve the problem of lack of water by installing water storage tanks on the balcony
Resort for tourists
A resort city sounds nice, but in fact it means that conditions are created here for tourists to relax, and local residents are mainly service personnel for them.
Until we began to live in Gelendzhik permanently, I could not even imagine a situation in which the local residents of the city did not matter to the city. Here everything is organized and done for tourists, prices, naturally, are also tourist prices and not only in the summer season, but all year round.
For example, until many tourists began to come to Gelendzhik for the New Year, the city did not organize any celebration for local residents. And when in 2021 many vacationers came to Gelendzhik for the New Year holidays and they were dissatisfied with the lack of city New Year festivities, then on New Year 2019 the city administration organized a big celebration with fireworks, concerts and entertainment programs that lasted for almost a month.
In Krasnodar, for example, the citywide celebration of the New Year - a concert, congratulations from the mayor and fireworks on the central square - are ordinary annual events held not for guests, but primarily for city residents.
In general, in Gelendzhik, as a resort, there are many different entertainments and ways to have a good time and improve your health. But many local residents cannot afford this.
Show at the Gelendzhik Dolphinarium, open all year round
For example, in Gelendzhik there are 2 cable cars operating all year round, on which you can climb to the top of the mountain range and admire the beauty. The fare for one of them is 900 rubles, for the other – 1600 rubles per person.
Do you think many local residents can afford such a weekend treat for their family? It would be understandable if such prices were only in the summer season, but these prices are year-round. And when on March 8, in one of the parks with a cable car, they held a holiday promotion with free entry for women, there was such a queue that they had to extend the promotion for another 2 days so as not to offend everyone.
The Georgian Black Sea resort of Batumi, for example, also has a cable car leading to the top of the ridge above the city. The fare on it is about 100 rubles. It should be noted that Batumi is an international resort, unlike Gelendzhik.
Or another example, in Gelendzhik there is a gallery of contemporary art, the cost of visiting the gallery is 600 rubles per person. For comparison, the cost of an entrance ticket to the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg is 400 rubles per person. The Russian Museum has dozens of halls with brilliant works, and here in the Gelendzhik gallery there are 2 small rooms and a courtyard, and the price is 600 rubles - all year round.
How do you think people will feel who, living in their city, can afford little in it? When they have to literally survive here, while vacationers come and waste money here? Yes, it's unfortunate. I'm not talking about all the locals, but many of them have sad eyes.
How will people who feel disadvantaged treat tourists? Yes, that’s exactly how they treat them, I’ve heard more than once on the street: “Soon these guys will come again!”
Therefore, many local residents have the idea of earning money from tourists at any cost, and out of a feeling of this inequality, they begin to do this with some kind of frenzy: a milkshake without ice cream, an electric scooter with non-working brakes, rumpled mattresses in rooms everywhere, etc.
Until we lived in Gelendzhik permanently, I did not see the difference between Krasnodar residents and Gelendzhik residents. And then, suddenly one day, returning from Gelendzhik to Krasnodar, it immediately struck me that most people in Krasnodar had a prosperous and contented appearance, some kind of confidence in their eyes and optimism. I'm not talking about all the people in cities, but about some general trend.
Prices for groceries and other goods and services in Gelendzhik
Prices in Gelendzhik are almost everything higher than in Novorossiysk and Krasnodar, at least 20-30%, and sometimes 2-3 times.
For example, in July of this year (2019) I bought pink tomatoes at the market in Krasnodar for 50 rubles/kg, red tomatoes for 35 rubles/kg, zucchini for 25 rubles/kg and grapes for 50 rubles/kg. Arriving in Gelendzhik, I specifically went to the market and looked how much it all costs here: pink tomatoes - 70, red tomatoes - 50, zucchini - 50, grapes - 100. It may turn out, of course, for many cities in Russia these are quite normal prices for quality vegetables and fruits, which is exactly what they are here, but in Krasnodar they are cheaper.
On Saturday, a weekend fair is held on the square near the central market in Gelendzhik, as in other cities in Kuban. Local residents love to shop there for groceries - fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, sausage, cheese - prices here are lower than at the market, but not for everyone. And for those with more or less adequate prices, Gelendzhi residents line up.
Let me give you a few more examples about prices. If in Novorossiysk and Krasnodar the cost of a cinema ticket starts from 130 rubles, then here in Gelendzhik the minimum ticket price is 200 rubles.
Interesting facts about Gelendzhik
Since Gelendzhik is a popular place and attracts the attention of a large number of people, it is surrounded by various stories and facts that would be interesting to know.
Firstly, it is worth noting that this region occupies an important place in the work of some writers and poets. The most famous among them is M. Yu. Lermontov. According to some sources, the writer was here in 1837 on military duty. It was here that he was inspired to write his famous novel, A Hero of Our Time. In this work, the main character, Pechorin, takes exactly the same route as Lermontov. In the city, as already mentioned, there is even a monument dedicated to the writer, on the pedestal of which there is a facsimile of his seal. Nearby there is also a boulevard named after Lermontov.
Another interesting thing worth paying attention to is the hydroair show, which is periodically held in the city. This event is an exhibition of aviation achievements related to water and ship-based operations. It is carried out once every 2 years.
