Story

The village of Kalatay (according to folk etymology - from the Turkic Kala-ata “father’s settlement”) on the site of the future city was founded in 1661 (according to other sources in 1663 or 1675). The founding of the settlement in the 17th century is a controversial issue. The existence of the village of Kalata in 1808 is documented (a report based on the results of a population audit). This year is officially recognized by the City Duma as the year the city was founded. In 1812, copper ore was found near the Kalatinka River. In the middle of the 19th century, deposits of placer gold were found nearby (in the area of Lake Shigir), located under a layer of peat. When the peat was opened, the Shigir idol was found. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Kalatinskoye field was being actively developed. In 1912, the Kalatinsky sulfur-pyrite mine produced 2,201.0 thousand pounds of ore.

The primary one is most likely the name of the river Kalata (Kalatinka). A version has been put forward about its origin from the Russian dialect kalatat - “to pound”, “to babble”, kalatorit - “to chatter”. A toponym may indicate the characteristic murmur, “talk” of a river.

Kalatinsky copper smelter

On May 1, 1914, the Kalatinsky copper smelter was launched (it was part of the Joint Stock Company of Verkh-Isetsky Mining and Mechanical Plants). In September 1915, the plant was connected by two railway lines: a narrow-gauge one to Neivo-Rudyanka and a wide-gauge one from Kalata to Shurala station. In 1916, the plant smelted 2,190 tons of blister copper. During the First World War, there was an underground Bolshevik cell in Kalat: on May 1, 1916, 9 May Day participants were arrested. In December 1917, the plant was shut down.

The plant was restarted after the end of the active phase of the Civil War in the Urals. On May 5, 1922, the Kalatinsky plant produced the first refined copper in the Soviet Union. This day began to be considered the birthday of the Soviet non-ferrous metallurgy. The Kalatinskoye field was developed in the pre-war period, but was exhausted and in 1941 it was put into dry storage and then flooded. In August 1934, Kalata was visited by the People's Commissar of Heavy Industry of the USSR G.K. Ordzhonikidze. He criticized the order at the plant and during his visit A. A. Litvinov was appointed director of the plant.

In 1932, the village of Kalata received city status. In December 1935, the city was renamed “Kirovgrad” in honor of Sergei Mironovich Kirov.

On February 1, 1963, the Council of Workers' Deputies of the city of Kirovgrad was transferred to the subordination of the Sverdlovsk Regional Council of Workers' Deputies.
