Soils of geographical areas of the Irkutsk region

The basis of the soil cover of the Irkutsk region is eluvial and deluvial deposits covering bedrock and quaternary layers. The soils are predominantly podzolic, there are chernozems and marshy areas, and there are saline and solonetzic soils. The mountainous regions of the Irkutsk region are characterized by mountain-forest podzolic and mountain-tundra soils with outcrops of bedrock and rocky placers.

The most diverse in soil cover are the taiga regions of the southern part of the Central Siberian Plateau, where, within the Oka-Angara and Angara-Iya interfluves, sod-forest and sod-carbonate soils are widely represented, with almost no signs of podzolization. The soils here are mainly weakly podzolic and soddy-podzolic with areas of chernozems (total area over 100 thousand hectares). Mineral resources of the Irkutsk region

Within the Irkutsk region, four coal-bearing basins are known - Irkutsk, Poymenno-Cheremshansky, Tunguska and Pribaikalsky. Fossil coal resources in the region as of January 1, 2000 are 46 billion tons, of which balance reserves by category. A+B+C1 amount to 8.2 billion tons, reserves cat. C2 – 6.2 billion tons. Relief of the Irkutsk region

The region's territory covers the south of the Central Siberian Plateau and the basins of the upper reaches of the Angara, Lena and Lower Tunguska. In the southwest, the Eastern Sayan mountain ranges are wedged into its borders, in the east the Primorsky and Baikal ridges, the Stanovoye and Patomskoye highlands. The Irkutsk region includes part of the water surface of Lake Baikal. The lowest point is located at the bottom of Lake Baikal, near Olkhon Island, and corresponds to 1181 m below sea level. The highest is at the top of the Kodar ridge, at 2999 m above sea level. Thus, the total elevation difference within the region reaches 4180 m.

Plateau. The main part of the region has a flat mountain topography, with a slight slope to the north and northwest. This is confirmed by the flow of rivers in this direction. The plateau is dominated by heights of 500–600 m above sea level, with absolute elevations decreasing to 300–400 m to the northwest. At the same time, there are separate elevations, with elevations of up to 1000 m or more, in the form of the Leno-Angara plateau and the Angara ridge.

The Lena-Angara Plateau is a watershed between the Lena and Angara. It is separated from the Baikal ridges by the so-called Pre-Baikal depression, the width of which reaches 100 km.

The Angara Ridge is located in the western part of the plateau. It stretches from the Eastern Sayan to the Lower Tunguska basin. The ridge formed in the fault zone of the southeastern tip of the Tunguska syneclise and is a chain of anticlinal folds and sheet trap intrusions. The Angara-Ilim deposits of magnetite iron ores, discovered in the middle of the last century, are associated with trap intrusions.

There are no lowlands on the territory of the region similar to those in Western Siberia or Yakutia. The surface here does not fall below 200 m above sea level. The existing low-lying areas are confined to river valleys and occupy no more than 1.5% of the territory. However, despite the elevated terrain, there are swamps located in low areas of watersheds and in the floodplains of some rivers. There are many lakes. In addition to Baikal, you can name lake. Within the plateau, between Irkutsk and Taishet, a wide strip (up to 140 km) stretches the Pre-Sayan Plain. In the west, it covers the middle reaches of the Angara and the floodplains of its left tributaries, in the east, part of the Lena to the mouth of the Kirenga. This is the most convenient territory for economic development. The main transport routes pass along it, and the most important industrial centers are located here. The forestry and mining industries are developing in this area, and almost all agricultural land is concentrated.

The north of the region is occupied by the vast and sparsely populated Erbogachen Plain with relative heights of 300–400 m. This territory is currently poorly developed, although large reserves of various fossil mineral resources have been discovered here.

Mountain ranges. In the south of the region there are vast mountain ranges of Khamar-Daban and Eastern Sayan. Their average height reaches 1500 m, and the peaks of individual ridges located on the territory of the Republic of Buryatia near the borders of the region rise to 3000 m.

The foothills of the Eastern Sayan are covered with taiga, rich in forests, furs and minerals. In the mountains there are alpine forms of vegetation. Stormy and swift in the mountains, they become calm and wide on the Pre-Sayan Plain.

In the northeast direction, a number of spurs depart from the Eastern Sayan (Tunkinsky, Kitoisky, Velsky, Okinsky, etc.), which are watersheds between the left tributaries of the Angara Irkut, Kitoy, Belaya, Oka, etc.

The Primorsky ridge rises along the western coast of Lake Baikal; in the north it connects with the Baikal ridge, the absolute heights of which reach 2500 m. In the northeast, in the Bodaibinsky and Mamsko-Chuysky administrative regions, the North Baikal and Patom highlands are located. They are characterized by mid-mountain relief (with heights of 1000–2000 m), the presence of continuous permafrost and glaciers. Seismic . The Baikal rift zone is characterized by neotectonic activity and high seismicity (up to 8–10 points at the epicenter).
