It includes the Camel, Byk, Zmeyka, Razvalka, Beshtau, Lysaya mountains, as well as tasting of the legendary mineral waters. The ascent to and descent from each peak takes several hours, depending on sports training and weather conditions, so you can choose the most extreme vacation with an overnight stay in the mountains or a more gentle one, with a return to civilization, the famous resort cities of Zheleznovodsk, Pyatigorsk and Essentuki are nearby.

Hiking route

Remember the lines of the romantic philosophical rock composition “Golden City” performed by Boris Grebenshchikov “You will be met there by a fiery-maned lion, And a blue ox full of eyes, With them is a golden celestial eagle, Whose unforgettable gaze is so bright...” All these symbols will really meet you during traveling through the “magical”, relict, unique nature of the Stavropol Territory, but first things first – let’s start our route!

Mount Iron

Mount Zheleznaya is the main mountain of Zheleznovodsk. The city itself arose thanks to the discovery of mineral springs on the mountainside.

The height of the mountain is 853 meters.

On our website there is a large article about Mount Zheleznaya and an article about the path around this mountain.

Entertainment for children

If a child has never been to the Caucasus, then Zheleznovodsk will become pure entertainment for him. If the young tourist is not impressed by the pump rooms, city squares and palace, then you can visit another place - “ice caves”

Ice Caves on Iron Mountain

A child explorer will love climbing Iron Mountain through the forest. There are many hiking trails in Zheleznovodsk, the most interesting ones begin at the Slavyanovsky spring. At the beginning of each trail there are signs with information and a climbing diagram. There are signs in the form of carved pillars, old drinking fountains (they are not working now, but the sculptures are worth visiting) and a prehistoric site. There is also a permafrost grotto here. Essentially this is a cave, the air temperature in which does not exceed 12°C. There are branches in the grotto, and on its stone walls there are inscriptions and drawings of tourists. And the grotto got its name because of the eternal cold (even in the June heat).

Photo gallery: interesting places on the way to the “ice caves”

There are images and words on the idol pillars, if you read the inscriptions on all the pillars, you will get a story

On the climbing trails you can find many sculptures (both stone and wooden)

The Prehistoric Man's Cave is a simple hole in the rocky side of the mountain, but the children love the fact that ancient people may have lived here

The cold cave of Iron Mountain is also called the Permafrost Grotto, although the temperature here does not drop below zero.

Mount Beshtau

This is the main mountain of the Caucasian Mineral Waters region. It is also difficult to confuse it with any other mountain. Its height is 1401 meters. Mount Beshtau rises almost 800 meters above Zheleznovodsk.

Most of the city of Zheleznovodsk is located along the northern slopes of this mountain. Beshtau has 5 peaks, but only 3 are visible from Zheleznovodsk. The highest in the center is Big Tau.

To the right of it is the Small (Wooded) Tau, to the left of the large Kozyi Rocks. You can learn more about Beshtau from this article, and about the climb to the top here.

Another large mountain in the vicinity of Zheleznovodsk is Mount Razvalka. It is clearly visible from the city center and from the Mountain Air sanatorium.

On the other side, the mountain can be seen in the area of the mud baths and from the resort lake 30 Let Pobeda.

The height of the mountain is 926 meters. We wrote more about Razvalka in this article.

From Zheleznovodsk to Lermontov in reverse order

Once I tried to walk the route from Zheleznovodsk to Lermontov in the reverse order from Ostroy Mountain. I took a taxi from Essentuki, where I was resting, to a clearing near Ostroy Mountain. The driver took me to Dubravnaya Street in the city of Lermontov. Having learned the purpose of my trip, he brought me straight to the place. And I didn't have to walk. But something strange happened to me there. Knowing the road well, I got lost. Repeatedly I tried to go from Tupoya to Medova. But she always went out to Beshtau.

Mount Beshtau

Then I went to the lower spring near Mount Beshtau.

And went up to the Eagle Rocks guest complex.

Guest complex "Eagle Rocks"

From there we had to call a taxi, since it was autumn and it was getting dark. And there was no point in going to the public transport stop. The last minibus left for Essentuki.

Mountains Bull and Camel

These mountains of Zheleznovodsk are located to the west of the city. You can clearly see them when traveling towards Essentuki. Mount Bull (Bykogorka) is clearly visible when descending from the park into the city along the central road along Lenin Street. Its height is 817 meters.

Mount Camel (Camel) is 885 meters high.

Visible from the resort park from the observation deck of the Mountain Air sanatorium.

Brief description of Zheleznovodsk

Zheleznovodsk is a small resort town in the Stavropol Territory. It is part of the Kavminvody resort region, its total area is 93.13 km2, and the population is about 25 thousand people. Zheleznovodsk is located on the Stavropol Upland (in the foothills of the Caucasus Range) and at an altitude of more than 500 meters above sea level. In 2003, Zheleznovodsk received the title “Best City in Russia” among small cities.

Zheleznovodsk is located 12 km from Pyatigorsk, 191 km from Stavropol and 6 km from Beshtau station

A little history of the city

Zheleznovodsk began its existence at the beginning of the 19th century. The Russian scientist and the Kabardian prince Izmail-Bey discovered two thermal springs near the Iron Mountain. This place immediately became popular; patients from different regions began to come to the springs. True, at that time there was no city here yet - there were only huts, and the healing place was simply fenced off with a fence. Later, General A.P. Ermolov created a special commission that began building a resort town. Towards the middle of the 19th century, 40 families of retired military personnel moved to Zheleznye Vody and founded the settlement. This settlement became a Cossack village, and in 1856 the sources were studied by F.A. Batalin, and another 23 keys were discovered.

Since 1861, N.A. Novoselsky began to promote the hospital. By the 20th century, water supply, electricity and railways had already been installed here. The village park was developed, modern buildings were erected, including hotels. For the fastest development of the resort, some local doctors created a hospital in their home. The first official sanatorium of Zheleznovodsk was opened in 1911. The wounded and sick were treated here during the First World War and the Great Patriotic War. The settlement received city status in 1917. Now Zheleznovodsk is part of one of the largest Russian resort areas.

How to get to Zheleznovodsk

Several ways to get to the city:

  1. By plane via Mineralnye Vody from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Samara and other large cities. From the airport to Zheleznovodsk you can take minibus No. 11, taxi or bus No. 70.
  2. By train via Pyatigorsk or Minvody. It takes up to 35 hours to travel from Moscow, and up to 2 days from St. Petersburg.
  3. By bus from Moscow, Pyatigorsk, Uchkenen, Lermontov, Minvod, Stavropol, etc.
  4. By taxi or personal car. From Moscow along the M-4 highway, in the Krasnodar Territory - along the P-217 highway. You can also drive along the P-22 highway, and in Elista turn onto the Caucasian road through the village of Aleksandrovskoye.

It is convenient to get to Zheleznovodsk through the nearest large cities (Pyatigorsk, Minvody, Essentuki, etc.)

Mount Snake

Mount Zmeyka (Snake) has little to do with Zheleznovodsk. It is located in the vicinity of Mineralnye Vody. Actually, this is the first mountain you see when leaving the plane.

On the other hand, the mountain is clearly visible when entering Zheleznovodsk from Pyatigorsk.

However, from Zheleznovodsk the mountain can be seen in the area of the mud baths and from the resort lake of the 30 Let Pobeda sanatorium.

This mountain is the second largest and third highest among the mountains in the region. Its height is 994 meters.

The building was built back in 1868 for the Russian army general Seyid Abdullah Khan. The finishing was carried out by masters from Bukhara and Khorezm. In the 20th century, the palace was a hospital, then a medical and preventive institution. It still belongs to the sanatorium. Telman.

Intercession Church

The current church building was reconstructed from a 1912 monument, which was originally intended to operate mineral baths. In the mid-1990s, the dilapidated house was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church, and over the years the hydropathic clinic turned into a temple with a dome, a Sunday school, an icon painting and wood carving workshop, and a chapel with a consecrated spring.

Here you can also see such shrines as the icon of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos from the late 18th century and the icon of St. Ignatius with a particle of relics.

Mount Lysaya

Mount Lysaya (Lysogorka) is located further from Zheleznovodsk than the others. Its height is 739 meters.

The mountain in Zheleznovodsk is visible mainly from the top of the cascade stairs.

You can also see the mountain when going up to the central entrance to the park along Tchaikovsky Street.

Monument to fallen soldiers

No matter how intoxicated the beauty of the mountains is, you still have to go down. We continue to follow the route from Zheleznovodsk to Lermontov. We descend from Mount Tupoy and return to the road from which we turned off. We move forward along the road for a few minutes and notice a good path going to the left. We follow it and come out to a flower garden to the left of a huge stone lying in the forest to the side of the mountain. We come closer and see in the middle of a site fenced with stones and planted with flowers with the 1942 burial of Soviet soldiers of the Great Patriotic War - the defenders of Zheleznovodsk.

The monument is a rock with the image of a soldier in a helmet. There is also a memorial plaque on the rock with the words: “Let's remember everyone by name, let's remember with our grief. The dead don’t need this, the living need this.”

The names of the victims are not indicated on the monument. On the left, almost nearby, is the massif of Mount Ostroy. The grave is always well maintained.

Mountain Honey

This mountain in Zheleznovodsk seems to tower over the residential areas of the city like a huge stone tooth.

In the resort park of Zheleznovodsk, the mountain is clearly visible in the area of the Mountain Air sanatorium.

The height of the mountain is 725 meters. We wrote about Medovaya in detail in this article.

City of Lermontov

The city of Lermontov is located on the CMS, but is not a resort. This is an industrial city. In 2021 the population was 22,891.

city of Lermontov

The city was founded in 1953 during the construction of the Mining and Chemical Ore Department. City status was granted in 1967. In Soviet times, until 1967, the city was closed. The fact is that Lermontov initially developed exclusively for industrial activities. The city was home to the country's first enterprise for the extraction and processing of uranium-containing ores. Raw materials were mined here without which the security of our country was not possible.

During geological exploration work on Mount Beshtau in 1951, deposits of radon waters were discovered. They served to build a radon hydropathic clinic in the city of Pyatigorsk.

In 1967, the specialized significance of the city was lost; enterprises of the radio-electronic industry, instrument making, automation equipment and control systems, etc. appeared.

In 1974, ore reserves in the upper Beshtau mines ran out. And in the lower part of the mountain, ore mining work was completely stopped. Since the continuation of work threatened to disrupt the routes along which mineral waters pass. But the plant's activities continued for another 20 years. The plant worked on imported raw materials.

In 1987, the village of Ostrogorka became part of the city.

Mountains Tupaia and Ostraya

Mount Tupaya (Kabanka) has a height of 767 meters, Mount Ostraya 872 meters. These mountains of Zheleznovodsk are located along the western slope of Beshtau.

From the resort park they can be seen in the area of the Beshtau and Mountain Air sanatoriums. At the same time, it is almost impossible to separate them visually, since they are on the same line.

One of the best available views of these mountains of Zheleznovodsk opens from the plateau of Mount Medovaya.

Temple of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duchess Olga of Russia

The Temple of Princess Olga of Russia is one of the key religious and cultural spaces of the city. For believers, this is the main place of worship. But it will also be interesting for ordinary tourists: the building is distinguished by its beautiful ceremonial architecture, and the shrines have an interesting history. You can also visit the temple with a city guide.

Train Station

Train Station

Architectural monuments greet guests of Zheleznovodsk as soon as they get off the train. We are talking about a one-story station building, which was inaugurated on January 1, 1897. Since then, the station has been neglected, then in our time the monument was restored and even partially put into operation.

Nowadays, trains run from the station to Beshtau and Kislovodsk, and its cozy platform is equipped with benches and lanterns.

Another popular art object of the Resort Park is located next to the Smirnovsky spring. The eagle is a key symbol of the Caucasus and its main wealth - mineral waters.

It is this bird with open wings that sits on a stone mountain. In his claws the prey is a snake, in whose image all diseases are hidden. By the way, the forerunner of modern sculpture appeared in 1901, and in 1973 the eagle was made of bronze.

Ostrovsky baths

At the end of the 19th century, under the leadership of the architect P. Yu. Syuzor, a building for hydrotherapy and mud therapy in an oriental style was built in Zheleznovodsk. Even today it resembles a mosque because of the dome, Arabic script and the design of the courtyard.

Now the baths, named after the Minister of State Property M.N. Ostrovsky, are closed for restoration, but the monument can be seen from the outside.

Health paths are a popular method of treatment and rehabilitation through mountain walks. The low mountains of Zheleznovodsk with varying levels of slope of the trails are perfect for such therapy.

Ostrovsky baths

Ostrovsky Baths is a beautiful 19th century building, built in the Moorish style, located in the very center of the city, named after the brother of the great playwright, who invested a lot in the development of Zheleznovodsk. Because of the round domes, it somewhat resembles a mosque with a minaret. But now you can’t get inside the ancient hydropathic clinic; it is under restoration.

Where is it located: opposite the railway station

Dacha of the Emir of Bukhara

The dacha of the Emir of Bukhara is the former residence of a Central Asian ruler in the Caucasus and a beautiful building in the Moorish style of the early 20th century with turrets and a golden dome. In Soviet times, it was a building of the sanatorium named after. Telman. Now it is private property; restoration was supposed to be completed in November 2021, but it never began. On our visit, it was in terrible disrepair and resembled an autistic abandoned place - it was covered in thickets of weeds, with plaster falling off, but had not yet lost the signs of its former greatness.

Where is it: Resort Park

Pushkin Gallery

The Pushkin Gallery is the sister of the Lermontov Gallery in Pyatigorsk, designed by the same Warsaw architect Schiller. It is curious that the structure was assembled from ready-made structures; the metal components of the building of the future stained glass gallery were brought to Zheleznovodsk by train in disassembled form.

Pushkinskaya was commemorated in honor of the poet, who was in Zheleznovodsk and the resort made a strong impression on him; it was here that the idea of his poem “Prisoner of the Caucasus” was born. This gallery is the pearl of the resort park; its halls host exhibitions of paintings by local artists and live music concerts; Isadora Duncan, Joseph Kobzon and Edita Piekha performed under its arches.

Entrance: free, exhibition of paintings 50 rubles.

Resort Park

I recommend starting your tour of the Caucasus Mining Waters from this park. The protected park is the heart of the resort, very calm and peaceful, just like Zheleznovodsk, with a lot to see. There are three pump rooms with mineral water of different compositions on the territory; it consists of several levels and is divided into Lower and Upper parks.

Inside the park there are excursions on electric cars around Mount Zheleznaya, and rental of electric scooters and bicycles is available. Through its vast territory there are many walking paths to interesting places, such as the Mistress of the Mountain and the Permafrost Cave.

In addition to squirrels, the park is also home to many furry friends; they even came up with a name for them - resort cats.

Reviews by month

Tourists come to this region at different times of the year. Many people leave reviews about their holidays in Zheleznovodsk.

January

Tatyana, 56 years old

Most of all, the first winter month is suitable for a relaxing holiday, and most importantly, for treatment with mineral waters. In Zheleznovodsk you can significantly improve your health, especially if you have problems with the digestive system, kidneys, or metabolism. In addition, walking around the winter city is a pleasure. The streets are still dressed in New Year's outfits, the Zheleznovodsk park is picturesque. I really enjoyed my holiday in January.

February

Stanislav, 40 years old

It turned out that the vacation fell in February. We decided to go closer to the mineral springs to improve our health and breathe in the mountain air. Moreover, trips to the sanatorium are inexpensive. We didn’t regret it at all. The winter was mild, although there were winds. They drank water in the pump room from the Slavic spring. The water in it is hot, the temperature is about +55 degrees. I especially liked walking and breathing the purest ionized air.

March

Svetlana, 48 years old

March is not a very pleasant month for vacation, but it was at the beginning of spring that we were able to get together with our family. We went to Zheleznovodsk - everyone had different health problems, and mineral water, according to rumors, helped many. The city was met with tedious rain and fog, so the first impression was not very rosy. But I liked the sanatorium: comfortable, friendly staff, many recreational activities. We walked a lot, breathed the mountain air - it didn’t always rain, it was sunny. We saw the sights of the city, although there was little time between procedures.

April

Inna, 31 years old

We went to Zheleznovodsk in April. We chose the resort because of its miraculous climate and mineral waters. We thought it was boring, cold and gray there at that time. But it has already become warmer outside, there is no snow, greenery has begun to appear. We walked around the park, enjoyed the fresh air, drank water, visited the sights, and were happy.

May

Elena Andreevna, 61 years old

Most of all I like to travel to Zheleznovodsk in the spring, especially in May. It's not hot, but it's not cold either. Everything begins to bloom: blossom, trees, bushes. The beauty is incredible. The air is filled with freshness and aromas. The main thing, of course, is mineral springs - drink healing water as much as you want.

June

Igor Sergeevich, 52 years old

I went to Zheleznovodsk several times. Summer is a favorite time to relax at the resort, although it can be a little hot. I really like this fertile region with beautiful nature and clean air. In the summer everything is open, there is a lot of entertainment around, excursions to interesting places are organized. You can also visit the city’s sights on your own. I often rested on the lake, where I could swim and sunbathe on sunbeds. In general, in June the weather is beautiful, there is greenery all around, it’s easy to breathe.

July

Veronica, 28 years old

For the first time my friend and I visited Zheleznovodsk. I really liked the resort town, as it is cozy, not noisy, with a well-developed infrastructure, and greenery all around. Excursion programs introduce vacationers to shrines and natural attractions. You can take a walk around Iron Mountain, visit a wonderful city park, or relax by the lake.

August

Galina Borisovna, 65 years old

Summer is in full swing in Zheleznovodsk. I came to this resort several times at different times of the year, but spending time here in the summer is the most pleasant. There is greenery all around, no sweltering heat, clean air, life-giving water. The sanatorium has a lot of different procedures aimed at getting rid of various types of diseases. There are a lot of tourists in August - it's vacation time, but there is not much noise.

September

Vyacheslav, 49 years old

I went to the resort due to minor health problems. I liked Zheleznovodsk very much. There is everything you need for a comfortable stay, there are restaurants, cafes, and kebab shops. There is beauty all around - nature plays with bright colors. There are no autumn rains, you can walk a lot and visit interesting places.

October

Tatyana Vasilievna, 43 years old

This is my second time coming to this resort. The first time I went on vacation was in the summer. There were a lot of tourists, all the hotels were full. I decided to go next time in October. I liked the autumn holiday even more. It’s still warm, there are rains, but not often, the trees have not yet shed their beautiful colors, it’s easy to breathe, mineral water gives you energy.

November

Sergey Leonidovich, 50 years old

We managed to get to the resort in November. To be honest, I didn’t really want to go at this time of year. I imagined that it would be damp, uncomfortable, and that I wouldn’t want to go outside. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Late autumn in Zheleznovodsk is quite warm, about 5-6 degrees plus, there is almost no rain. You can walk a lot, drink healing water directly from the springs, and visit local attractions. All liked it

Transport

Zheleznovodsk occupies a small area, so you can walk from one end of the city to the other in an hour. There is still transport in Zheleznovodsk. These are minibuses that run both within the city and to the railway station. Buses also run around the city, and there are various suburban connections. The ticket price is small - the cost of travel in the city and outside is different.

Taxi services operate 24/7. Taxi driver services are provided at a price starting from 16 rubles. for one kilometer. Daytime and nighttime fares vary.

Increasingly, tourists use bicycles to get around the city and surrounding areas. Very convenient and profitable. There are no bike rentals in the city. Some hotels also provide two-wheeler rentals. The hourly rental price decreases according to the duration of use of the bike. Payment for a vehicle per day is no more than 700 rubles. As a rule, in addition to the bicycle, tools and locks are provided. When cycling, it is recommended to use the route map.

Those interested can rent a car. This transport option is suitable for tourists who are in the city for a short time or are tired of walking. When traveling by car, there are no problems with parking in Zheleznovodsk. Paid parking lots are available near large facilities. Also, almost every hotel or sanatorium is equipped with paid parking lots, which are mostly guarded.

Local agencies offer car rentals. It is convenient to book transport in advance. Then the chosen car will meet you at the railway station or airport - the car rental staff will take care of this. In this case, you must pay a deposit of approximately RUB 10,000. The cost of rental per day depends on the brand of car. It is worth agreeing and paying for additional services in advance, for example, if you need to install a child seat. During high season, car rental prices increase.

Food and drink

There are many places to eat in and around the small town - about fifty. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are offered by restaurants, kebab houses, snack bars, small cozy cafes, and inexpensive canteens. The menu has a wide variety of dishes, especially lucky for those who do not adhere to diets. Catering establishments offer both full meals and business lunches at affordable prices - prices start from 200 rubles.

You can have a snack between sightseeing at kebab shops.
