Syktyvkar

- Russian city of republican significance, the capital of the Komi Republic. The city is located on the left bank of the Sysola River.

In past

on the site of Syktyvkar there was the village of Ust-Sysola.
The first mention of it was made in a copy of the scribe books of 1586. Gradually the village grew thanks to trade and fur trade. In 1780,
Catherine II granted the village the status of a city and gave the name Ust-Sysolsk.

During the 19th century, Ust-Sysolsk developed into a large trading center in the North. On August 22, 1921, Ust-Sysolsk became the capital of the Autonomous Region of Komi. In 1930, the city was renamed Syktyvkar (in the Komi language, “city on the Sysol River”).

During the Soviet period, a powerful industrial complex was created in the city, the basis of which was the building materials industry, mechanical engineering, and timber industry enterprises. Modern Syktyvkar is the social and business center of the Komi Republic.

In the 1960s Yubileiny Square was organized. with the building of the regional committee of the CPSU (1960, architects I. N. Kuskov, I. V. Parkhachev; now the administration of the head of the Komi Republic), the House of Soviets (now the Council of Ministers of the Komi Republic; 1972, architects G. N. Ilyashenko, V. P. Shirshov, engineer G. G. Belykh) and a monument to V. I. Lenin (1967, sculptor L. E. Kerbel). Also the building of the Komi Republic Opera and Ballet Theater (1968, architect A.D. Turchaninov), the Syktyvkar Hotel (1975, architect A.D. Rakin and others); Cathedral of St. Stephen of Perm (1996–2001). Monuments to the poet I. A. Kuratov (1977, sculptor V. N. Sport

The most popular winter sports are: bandy, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, figure skating, etc. The Stroitel bandy club (founded in 1947) is a participant in the USSR championships (seasons 1984/85–1991/92; best result - 5th place in the championships 1985/86 and 1990/91) and Russia (1992/93–2009/10 and from 2017/18; silver medalist of the Russian championship 1992/93), hosts opponents at the multifunctional Republican Stadium ( 1971; 15 thousand places). The mini-football team “New Generation” (founded in 2006) has been playing in the Russian Championship Super League since the 2009/10 season. Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Syktyvkar is presented in the form of a shield. A golden bear is depicted in an azure field. It is located on a green mountain with a silver spruce. The animal lies in a golden den. Above the creature there is a silver star in the form of an element of national ornament. The latter is made in the form of a slotted square rhombus with three rays. They extend perpendicularly from each side to half its length.

The artistic composition was adopted by the decision of the Council of the Moscow Region. Syktyvkar" dated November 29, 2004 No. 16/11-205 (as amended on March 25, 2005 No. 18/03-249 with technical changes dated December 16, 2005 and December 11, 2009). Included in the State Heraldic Register of the Russian Federation under No. 1885.
