The small town of Myshkin was built on the left bank of the Volga in the Myshkinsky district of the Yaroslavl region. What became famous for a city with a population of less than 6 thousand people? The answer may surprise you - the only Mouse Museum in the world! The year of foundation of the museum is considered to be 1966. It was then that a group of local history enthusiasts, without any financial support from outside, rented the premises and began to gradually replenish the collection with thematic objects of art. They could not even imagine that their business would live for half a century and become famous throughout the world!

The Mouse Museum, along with four other museums, is part of the Myshkin Folk Museum. The name of the institution speaks for itself. Within the walls of the museum, absolutely all the exhibits are, in one way or another, related to these small animals: toys, handicrafts, dishes, figurines and even sculptures. The beauty of the museum is that anyone can add their own item to the collection, even the simplest one, for which they will definitely receive a special certificate and be honored by the museum staff.

Exhibitions are more focused on children's audiences, however, experience shows that interesting competitions and games capture parents in their chains with an equally strong grip. For days on end, a cheerful, relaxed atmosphere reigns within the walls of the Mouse Museum, you can hear children's laughter and joyful squeals of competition winners.

Our organization was founded in 1998 with the goal of preserving and developing folk arts and crafts, traditions of folk national culture and habitat, and aesthetic education of the younger generation.
"Museum of Living Crafts"
“Museum of Living Crafts” is a display facility that houses two craft workshops, Kuznechnaya and Pottery, a “cashier mouse,” and a corner with chain mail and swords. Blacksmith's workshop - is a hall in which the Blacksmith's forge, bellows, various types of anvils and tools, as well as a large number of samples and products of blacksmith's craft are located. A pottery workshop is a hall in which there is a working pottery wheel, pottery products and a stand for testing pottery using the ancient method. “Cashier Mouse” has been living with us for more than 20 years; her task is to accept payment for photo and video shooting. In the corner with chain mail and swords you can touch and try on some samples. By visiting the “Museum of Living Crafts” you will see a Blacksmith and a Potter at work, who will expertly show and explain the basic techniques in their craft. And also our guests will be able to: – blow up the forge with real blacksmith bellows; – make sure of the quality of pottery by checking it in the old way; – feed the “Cashier Mouse” – take a photo in chain mail with a sword and helmet; – purchase exclusively handmade souvenirs by local craftsmen.
"City of masters"
in the “City of Masters” guests are invited to take training master classes and look into the world of crafts from the inside. The epicenter of creativity is not in the city itself, but in the Myshkinsky district, on the tourist route “Golden Ring of Russia” on the road from Uglich, 5 km short. to the town of Myshkin in the village of Povodnevo.

Master classes
In the “City of Craftsmen”, anyone is given a unique opportunity to learn the secrets of ancient crafts and take personal part in the creation of a souvenir. At the moment, master classes on the following folk crafts are being held in the village of Povodnevo: • Pottery Initially, pottery was not perceived as an element of art. Containers for storing and consuming food were made on a potter's wheel. The hardened clay did not allow water to pass through. This was attractive to our ancestors, because clay vessels could be used in almost any activity. Today, pottery is a separate art form, the popularity of which is growing in our region, thanks to the “City of Craftsmen”. After becoming familiar with the basics of the craft, visitors to the village can themselves, working on a potter's wheel, transform a piece of clay into a handmade product. On the territory of the workshop there is also a souvenir shop where you can buy your favorite clay products. • Blacksmith craft At the end of the 19th century, in the territory of the city of Myshkin there was an extensive blacksmith settlement, located on the very outskirts of the settlement. Today, many true blacksmithing professionals also live on this land. The initiative group and the creators of the “City of Masters” managed to gather talented masters of this difficult task in one place. Blacksmiths easily and enthusiastically tell guests about the intricacies of their craft. Every visitor will be able to try himself in the role of a real blacksmith and forge a unique product. • Carpentry Almost the first profession that our ancestors mastered was that of a carpenter. Processing wood and further manufacturing parts from it allowed people to first build their homes and then equip them. Carpentry nowadays specializes in the production of decorative elements and unique household utensils. Master classes on working with wood in the village. Povodnevo passes thanks to the skillful work of professional carpenters. For an hour, guests of the Myshkinsky district will learn the basics of working with wood. And you can get acquainted with the unique products of Myshkin carpenters in the souvenir shop. • Weaving craft You can easily touch a century-old weaving loom and try it out at work at a weaving workshop. Working at a mill that has preserved its centuries-old history can without a doubt be called a true pleasure. The work that the weaver demonstrates at the master class in the “City of Masters” cannot be called easy. To confirm, anyone is invited to try the machine in action. • Glass toy (lampwork) The lampwork technique is an artistic work with glass in the flame of a burner. Thanks to this unique technique, craftsmen have learned to create fragile and elegant jewelry. Glass products are made in the flame of an air-propane, oxygen, hydrogen or plasma torch, into which a rod of glass of a certain color is introduced, and the glass is fused into a bead or product; glass of different colors can be added on top. With the advent of such an interesting method of glass processing, many people have discovered another fascinating hobby, which the City of Masters offers to get acquainted with. • Saw toy Saw carving is one of the most ancient types of wood carving. It is made in the form of two-, three- or tetrahedral recesses, forming on the surface a pattern of geometric shapes - triangles, squares, circles. From the simplest elements, master carvers learned to create rich patterns used to decorate not only boxes, but also various household items. In the “City of Craftsmen,” saw-cut carving techniques are used to make toys. A distinctive feature of such toys are patterns that allow the product to look more sophisticated and fragile. Professional artisans and their apprentices will help guests master the art of geometric carving. • Lathe workshop Woodworking on a lathe is significantly different from carpentry. Artistic processing of wood using a lathe is considered more complex and requires certain skills. The process of turning a product itself consists of several stages, which the wood master tells guests about at master classes.
Camping recreation area
For a comfortable stay of tourists in the village. Povodnevo has a camping recreation area. The word “camping” itself came into our vocabulary from the English language, which translated means outdoor recreation in tents. The camping area of the “City of Masters” has an area of 7.5 hectares and is located on the banks of the river. Povodnevka and 200 meters from the Volga River. There are two ponds on the campsite, one of them is stocked with crucian carp and tench for fishing, while the second is completely suitable for swimming. There are toilets, showers, washstands, dining tables, a stage, electricity and running water. Thanks to such comfortable conditions in the village of Povodnevo, guests of the area have the opportunity to spend more than one day at fascinating master classes and get to know the craft culture of the region better.
In conclusion, I would like to say that the “City of Masters” is being built at his own expense by Vasily Vladimirovich Terkin, and all the products and souvenirs that you will see in our workshops are exclusively handmade by our craftsmen.
Cozy provincial town filled with tourists
In Myshkin, everything necessary, or almost everything, exists in a single copy: one hospital, one educational, one music, one sports school, one library and approximately 6,000 people.
But the most amazing thing is that in this small provincial city of central Russia there are 28 museums!!! So, on the streets you can more often meet a walking tourist than a local resident. Apparently, the entire local population works in museums to satisfy the interests of curious travelers.
