Ingushetia: Magas and Nazran. The smallest region of Russia

Ingushetia is the smallest region of Russia. The length of the republic from north to south is 144 km, from west to east only 72 km. The area covers about 4 thousand km². We drove across Ingushetia in literally an hour on the way from Beslan to Chechnya, at the same time we visited Magas, stopped in Nazran and made a half-hour stop at the Memory Memorial near Nazran.

Nazran

We passed the outskirts of Nazran almost without seeing the city itself.

But we made a half-hour stop at the memorial complex commemorating the 70th anniversary of the deportation of Ingush and Chechens. I made a separate post about it, you can read it here.

We drive further, next to the memorial complex there is an Amphitheater.

Nazran is the largest city in Ingushetia with a population of about 100 thousand people and is not the official capital of the republic.

A few more photos of Nazran from the window of our minibus.

This is the end of the flat foothills of Ingushetia, which we covered with all the stops in less than an hour. Next was Chechnya.

Population, main buildings

The capital of Ingushetia has been steadily moving towards the future, starting in 1995, and since 2000 - and in the status of the capital, already official. During this time, the city grew in length by 4 km, and in width by 3 km, and also acquired a population (in Magas in 2012 about 5 thousand people live permanently, and more recently, at the beginning of 2010, its population was only 524 resident). About 5-6 thousand more people come here every day to work. About 90% of all republican government institutions are located in this city, including the residence of the president, ministries and parliament, as well as small units of the administrative apparatus. The Ingush State University is also located here, and a television building was completed for the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the republic. The capital of Ingushetia also has its own republican bank, and the business center has recently begun to actively develop.

How to get to Nazran and Magas

The easiest way to get here is by plane. The smallest region of Russia has its own airport. Previously, it was called “Ingushetia” airport, now it is “Magas” airport. If you are planning to fly, you can purchase plane tickets at the best prices for dates convenient to you here.

There are no regular buses from the airport to Nazran and Magas. You can get there by taxi using the services of private bombers or order a transfer. In the transfer option, you will be met at the airport, helped with your luggage and taken to your doorstep. You can order a transfer on this website. Sometimes it will be cheaper and faster to get through Vladikavkaz airport.

If you just want to travel around the Caucasus, then you can get to the capitals of Ingushetia along the P-217 Caucasus highway. It is also the M29 or E50 highway. For those who do not have their own car, consider renting a car. You get comfort, mobility and freedom of movement. You can travel around the neighboring gorges of Ingushetia or, for example, see Grozny. You can rent a car inexpensively in Mineralnye Vody on the website economybookings.com.

Local features

Thanks to enhanced controls, Magas is quite safe. Walking late at night is not worth it, but only because it is generally not accepted here. At the same time, you should always have documents with you - quite a few of them are checked. After all, the border with North Ossetia lies 500 meters from the city border.

In Magas, and in other places in the Caucasus, women wear long skirts and scarves. Visitors are not required to strictly observe this rule, but are recommended. What ladies definitely shouldn't do is smoke. In addition to judgmental glances, you can easily receive a remark, sometimes not very polite.

The nearest airport is located 33 km from the city. The station is less than 8 km away, fortunately it is located in Nazran. There is also an intercity bus service. Public transport has already appeared in the city itself, but it is not of much use to tourists - it is easier to get around on foot, given the size of the city. However, there are still very few tourists themselves, and the hotel is just under construction. Those wishing to visit the youngest city in the Russian Federation will have to stay in Nazran.

Up to 80% of the city's population are Ingush, Sunni Muslims by religion. There is no mosque yet, but in 2021 a large Cathedral Mosque, as well as a number of other religious sites, should be built.

In general, Magas is built up with low-rise buildings, and the urban planning plan does not provide for houses higher than 5-6 floors. This is due to the fact that according to plans, the city’s population will not exceed 30 thousand people. The only exception to the city’s “low-rise” policy was the hundred-meter Concord Tower, made in the national style. There is an observation deck at an altitude of more than 80 m.

A notable feature is that they try to hide all the wires in the city underground. For example, city lighting lamps are not connected to each other by wires over the air. All communications are laid at the initial stages of construction.

Projects under construction

The future tense, which dominates the news from this city, also adds futurism. They mainly talk about the dates when it is planned to open the objects under construction today: the Drama Theatre, the Cathedral Mosque, the diagnostic center, the House of Friendship of the Peoples of the North Caucasus, schools, a business center, residential buildings, kindergartens and other buildings. The feeling of sterility is reinforced not only by the cleanliness and newness of the city streets, but also by the absence of any industry. Factories, factories and agricultural enterprises are not built here as a matter of principle.

Hypotheses about the location of ancient Magas

Magas, according to legend, was the name of the capital of the ancient Alan state (which was a union of mountain tribes). The location of the historical city has not been precisely established. Translated from the Ingush language, the name of the capital means “city of the Sun.” It is known that in 1239 the ancient Magas was destroyed by Batu’s troops. According to some versions, it was located exactly on the site of the current Ingush capital. But this assumption has not been confirmed. On the flag and coat of arms of the city there are two solar signs, which is a reference to the city of the Sun.

There is, however, a more prosaic hypothesis, according to which the lands of the current capital once belonged to the family of Ruslan Aushev, the first president of the republic. It was under him that the city of Magas was founded.

We told you about what the new capital of Ingushetia is like. Scanwords, which are found in abundance in newspapers and magazines, often contain a question about its name. Now you know what answer to write.
