In 1947, on the site where the city is now located, the government of the country decided to build a scientific enterprise for electromagnetic isotope separation. Construction proceeded very quickly - the industrial buildings of the future workshops were erected in the shortest possible time, the operation of the equipment was established, and the first products were produced. Construction of a village begins next to the enterprise.

People from various social strata contributed to the construction and development of the village: military personnel, young specialists and graduates of universities and technical schools, workers from neighboring settlements, representatives of the country's scientific elite. A year later, the first wooden houses appeared in the village, and by the early 1950s, the village had already developed social infrastructure, including: a kindergarten, a secondary school, a medical unit, a youth club and others. In 1954, the village received the status of a city, and from this year it began to be called Sverdlovsk-45 .

For 40 years, the city's activities were kept in the strictest confidence, and the city itself was not even displayed on maps.

The closed administrative-territorial formation Sverdlovsk-45 its official geographical name, familiar to modern people - “Lesnoy City” in 1994. Two years later, Lesnoy becomes the center of the municipality. And since 2006, “Lesnoy City” has become an urban district.

You can enter the city only with a pass; as a rule, it is issued only if there are close relatives in the city. But even in this case, the process of obtaining permission to enter the city is quite complicated: the procedure will take a lot of time and effort.

Million for life

In one of the courtyards of a two-story building, a woman is hanging out laundry. Her name is Svetlana. She recalls hearing an explosion while she was carrying empty cans into the barn.

“It became clear that something had happened at the enterprise. A little later, it was heard throughout the village who had died. A classmate’s husband was killed, they’ll give him a million. What is he to her now? She won’t replace her husband,” says Svetlana. “Maybe it will be used to partially pay for an apartment in Ryazan; there’s nothing else to do.” And how can I live here if I pay eight thousand rubles for housing and communal services for two rooms in a communal apartment? Such prices here are higher than in Ryazan.

While we were talking with her, one friend greeted the woman, then another. And everyone talked about the tragedy, discussed the cause. Some believe that negligence is to blame, while others blame it on old wiring that has “shorted.” And again the word “secrecy” is mentioned in the conversation, the residents are worried: “Will the answer to the question of who is to blame for the deaths be classified too?”
