Furmanov is a city (since 1918) in Russia, the administrative center of the Furmanovsky municipal district of the Ivanovo region.
Furmanov and its attractions. — Sutochno.ru
Furmanov is a town in the Ivanovo region, which is often visited by tourists as part of the Golden Ring route. This land is decorated with the domes of beautiful cathedrals, wooden houses with beautiful carvings, as well as interesting museums that will certainly expand your horizons. If you are not a fan of overpaying, we recommend renting an apartment for a day in any area of the city. After you decide on housing, let’s begin our walk.
So, we are in the city center. Let's walk along the main street, which is lined with beautiful brick mansions of the 19th century and cute wooden houses with patterned carved frames. Pay attention to the mansions of Gorbunov and Losev. The history of the city is connected with the activities of the manufacturer Grigory Konstantinovich Gorbunov. His estate, built at the beginning of the 20th century, is located on the picturesque high bank of the Shacha River, which flows right in the center of the city. And the Losev mansion is an estate built by the same Gorbunov for his daughter, who married Nikolai Ivanovich Losev. This is a wooden merchant mansion from the second half of the 19th century.
In the city center you will notice the fabulous silhouette of the magnificent Cathedral of Our Lady of All Who Sorrow, Joy of All Who Sorrow, built in the eclectic style. If you want to count the number of domes in this temple, you will have to try - you will count as many as 22 domes! This huge, majestic cathedral is richly decorated in the style of ancient Russian architecture of the 17th century, and inside the temple you will see three stunning marble iconostases. The Cathedral of Our Lady can simultaneously accommodate up to 2,500 believers! On the central street of the city, in the market area, stands the five-domed Church of the Holy Trinity with a high hipped bell tower, built in the 19th century at the expense of the same manufacturer Gorbunov. The oldest church in Furmanovo is the Church of the Ascension of the Lord. The cathedral changed its appearance several times, and has survived to this day in stone form. The altar, the refectory and the base of the bell tower were built in the 18th century, and all other parts of the temple have been preserved since the end of the 19th century. Also in Furmanovo, the doors of the St. Michael’s Church are open, and in the village of Shirokovo, Furmanovsky district, the Church of All Saints, whose history goes back more than 130 years.
After exploring the central part of the city, you can go to museums. First, of course, we will visit the memorial house-museum of Dmitry Furmanov, in whose honor the city of Sereda was renamed in 1941. Dmitry Andreevich Furmanov is a Soviet writer, author of the famous novels “Chapaev”, “Red Troops”, “Mutiny”, and also the commissar of the Chapaev division. The museum is located in the house where Dmitry Andreevich was born and spent his early childhood. On the ground floor of this house there was once a tavern, and on the second floor the Furmanov family rented a modest room. This room has now been restored in one of the halls of the museum. Here you will see the writer's lifetime publications, his personal letters and original photographs. You can learn about the rich history of the city from ancient times to the present day at the Museum of History and Local Lore, located in the Higher Professional Lyceum No. 7. Tools of primitive man, minerals, mammoth tusks and other exhibits will tell you about the old days. You will get acquainted with the founders of the textile industry - photographs of the Gorbunovs, Klementyevs, Nasedkins, Stulovs and other manufacturers adorn the stands. The pride of the museum is the recreated peasant farmstead of the late 19th century. The museum's exhibitions are also dedicated to major historical events of our country: the revolution, the civil and Great Patriotic Wars, and the post-war period. A separate exhibition is dedicated to writers, artists, and scientists who glorified Furman’s land with their talent. If time permits, you can go to the village of Shirokovo, which is located not far from Furmanov, and visit the memorial room-museum of the Ivanovo poet Mikhail Dudin. For connoisseurs of painting and art lovers, the Furmanov Art Gallery named after D. A. Trubnikov (Losev’s mansion) awaits. Here are collections of works by the famous artist Trubnikov and his equally talented students K. M. Maksimov and Yu. G. Ushakov. The gallery also stores works of ancient Russian painting from the 18th - 19th centuries and paintings by contemporary Ivanovo and Furmanov artists. The museum building itself is a residential building of the 19th century - a beautiful three-story mansion with a wonderful stone hall and a cozy veranda overlooking an ancient park. This gallery is a favorite meeting place for people of creative professions.
And if you like to just walk along the streets and admire the city landscapes, then go straight to Oktyabrskaya Street. In this area there is a block of ancient wooden buildings. Here you can safely photograph any house - each building is unique and different from its neighbors. You will also see beautiful wooden houses in the area of Bol Street. Furmanovskaya. Pay attention to the fabulous tower on Shchorsa Street. This is Potapov's house with stunning wooden decor on all sides.
And in conclusion, a few words about city holidays. Residents celebrate City Day in June on Textile Workers' Day, and here, annually on November 20, the Dudinsky Festival is held, dedicated to the memory of the poet M.A. Dudina. The date of the festival was not chosen by chance - it is the birthday of the famous poet.
A trip to the city of Furmanov will definitely give you vivid impressions and new interesting discoveries!

The Resurrection Monastery originally had the structure of a church, which was founded in the 18th century. The creator of this architectural masterpiece, which today is located on the outskirts of the city in the village of Ermolino, was P.A. Bykov. The construction completely repeated all the characteristic features of the Baroque, in the style of which many architectural buildings were made.

Historical sketch
In 1918, the city of Sereda was formed by the union of several factory villages and the trading village of Sereda-Upino (known since the 1620s). The oikonym is a variant of the name of the day of the week, Wednesday, and was assigned to the village because there were markets there on Wednesdays.
Renamed in 1941 in honor of the writer D.A., who was born here. Furmanova (1891-1926).

Monuments of history and culture
The estate of Nikolai Ivanovich Losev (son-in-law of manufacturer Gorbunov) is a good example of civil architecture of the 19th century. The main building is a typical wooden merchant mansion. It is moderately decorated with elegant saw carvings. The center of the street facade is successfully emphasized by a large balcony with a light lattice and monumental metal brackets with an intricate pattern. The openwork fence above the cornice is also beautiful. The interior layout of the house is interesting. On holidays, when balls were held here, it was possible to increase the size of the hall by expanding the corrugated seven-leaf partition, which easily folds into an accordion... Behind the Losev mansion stretches a vast park. A picturesque, irregularly shaped pond, shady alleys of linden, birch and poplar trees - everything here is unobtrusive, organic and creates the illusion of a natural landscape. A special part of this mansion is the veranda with stained glass windows, with its amazingly beautiful staircase expanding towards the bottom. I would also like to say something about the heating of the mansion. There were many rooms in the house, but the entire house was heated by a single stove. It was located in a large depression, below the basement, and “ate” many cubic meters of selected birch firewood. But the house was always warm, dry and there was never a danger of burning. It turns out that in the walls of the houses of Gorbunov and Losev there were many bends of chimneys - heat pipes, which all exited into one chimney opening. That's why there were massive pipes on the roofs of houses. Back in the 50s of our century, the mansions of the Gorbunovs and Losevs were heated. There was a person in the city who knew the heating system well and monitored it. With the death of this man, the unique building heating system also died. They were switched to steam heating, spoiling the elegance of the interior design of the rooms. If Gorbunov’s house stood on a high point, then Losev’s house was located on the very low left bank of the ravine. This begs the question: how did groundwater and spring waters not flood the furnace located at such a depth? But the architect took everything into account and created a reliable drainage system that ensures the removal of excess water. During the Soviet period, the drainage system was disrupted by road builders, and the building suffered from flooding for many years. For a long time, people said that there was an underground passage in Losev’s house. And then one day, when the water once again approached the basement, the workers of the art gallery (it is located in Losev’s house), lifting one of the iron floor slabs, saw a depression below... Having pumped out the water, they tried to examine the vaulted corridor, the direction of which goes towards the church, but the water did not allow this to happen. Research work is still ahead.

The history of the city of Furmanov (a small patriarchal town) goes back centuries. It became a city in 1918. Before this there was the village of Sereda... Some researchers believe that the name SEREDA came from the market day that took place here on Wednesday (Wednesday). Others believe that the village began to be called that because it was located in the middle of the road between Shuya and Nerekhta, Ivanovo-Voznesensk and Plyos. In the 18th century, a postal trade route, connecting Nerekhta and Shuya, also known as the “Ekaterininsky Highway” or “Big Road,” passed through the territory of the modern city. In particular, the road ran along the current central streets of the city - Paris Commune, Oktyabrskaya, Socialist, Bolshaya Furmanovskaya. According to one legend, in 1795, along the Great Road from Nerekhta through Sereda-Upino, the Russian commander A.V. Suvorov with his orderly P. Dubasov drove to his estate, the village of Sarajevo. On sections of the Great Road, from Fryankov towards Armenki, there are still remains of cobblestone pavement and traces of roadside ditches.
The city owes its birth, development and transformation into a famous large industrial center to the activities of the Sered factory owners Gorbunovs, Pavlovs, Skvortsovs, Klementyevs. Once upon a time, Sered factories gave life to the city and became its foundation.
The life and activities of Grigory Klimentievich Gorbunov were reflected in the Acts of the Council of the Old Believer Pomeranian Church of Christ in 1988, dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Rus'. Grigory Klimentyevich Gorbunov is an entrepreneur and philanthropist, whose life path comes from an Old Believer Kostroma business family.1 An excellent hospital was built at the factory with a well-equipped operating room, a dental room, a disinfection chamber, a pharmacy, and a separate infectious diseases department. To improve staff skills, there was a library, and medical and pharmaceutical journals were subscribed to. In 1893, the first school for children of workers and employees was opened at the factory. Three years later, a new stone building was built, which was subsequently expanded. The Gorbunovs' company supported other schools in the surrounding area. In 1910, the Gorbunovs donated funds and land for the construction of a vocational school. A large role for G.K. Gorbunov played a role in the development of the city of Ples. After the events of 1917, many factory owners went abroad, but the old man remained at home. In 1918, his factory was taken away from him, his house was requisitioned, and his property was sold under the hammer. Soon the new government ordered the old man to perform labor duties: he was forced to sweep the streets. And he humbly accepted this humiliation as a test sent to him. Residents went to the Council and asked the authorities to take pity on the old man and stop humiliating him. According to legend, after his death, Gorbunov was buried by the whole world according to all the Old Believer rules. Before interring the body, the old manufacturer was carried in his arms to his main brainchild - the factory. According to the memoirs of the guard: “he was buried near his church.”

Gorbunov's mansion (early 20th century) st. Sovetskaya, 6. A two-story stone house with a balcony and rich architectural decoration for G.K. built in the 2nd half of the 19th century. To this day, the mansion has well preserved antique lampshades, elegant stucco moldings and picturesque panels, wooden wall panels and double doors. Nearby, in the eighties of the 19th century, a mansion was built for Gorbunov’s daughter Alexandra, who married the Vladimir merchant of the 2nd guild, Nikolai Ivanovich Losev. The wooden house and outbuilding were built with a noticeable Art Nouveau influence. It is moderately decorated with elegant saw carvings. The center of the street facade was previously emphasized by a large balcony with a light latticework and monumental metal brackets in an intricate pattern. The openwork fence above the cornice is also beautiful. The interior layout of the house is interesting. On holidays, when balls were held, it was possible to increase the size of the hall by expanding the corrugated seven-leaf partition, which easily folds into an “accordion.” There were many rooms in the house. But the whole house was heated entirely by one single stove. It was located in a large depression, below the basement, and ate many cubic meters of selected birch firewood. But the house was always warm, dry and there was no danger of burning. Within the walls of this house there were many chimneys - heat ducts, which all exited into one chimney opening. That's why there was a massive pipe on the roof of the house. Losev's house was located on the low left bank of the ravine. The Gorbunov-Losev estate was united by an extensive park with a picturesque irregularly shaped pond, shady alleys of linden, birch and poplar trees. Until 1980, there was a wooden gazebo in the park, which surprisingly harmoniously combined with the carved decoration of N.I.’s mansion. Loseva. The two mansions were connected by an arched bridge built over a pond. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, the richest manufacturer G.K. Gorbunov was a simple and accessible person. Every Easter, he personally gave his workers 5 rubles; in the spring, the factory gave out fabric for curtains, and in the fall, everyone was given knitted mittens. At the expense of the enterprise, the entire infrastructure of the factory was created - residential buildings, a school for the children of workers, a free hospital with a maternity ward and houses for doctors. Currently, the mansion houses an employment service and a pension fund.
In 1880 in Sereda G.K. Gorbunov (by religion he belonged to the Old Believers of the Pomeranian sense) for himself and his fellow believers built a temple in honor of the Holy Trinity (now the Orthodox Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1908, at the expense of G.K. Gorbunov, a shelter for the sick was built in Moscow at the Preobrazhenskoye cemetery, elderly and crippled. In 1910, the manufacturer founded the Preobrazhensky Cemetery printing house with a bookbinding workshop. At a general meeting of Old Believers, Grigory Gorbunov was elected the first honorary member of the community.
These are the books our great-grandmother Zoya Mikhailovna Oparina had. She was a deeply religious person. Unfortunately, her photo did not survive. For the first five years of my life, I lived with her parents. And according to my mother’s memories, in the backyard she had a window cut out on her door - a counter on which she always left food for the poor and wanderers. My great-grandmother most likely mainly went to this temple. Now I can say with confidence that my great-grandmother also belonged to the Old Believers by religion. Church of the Ascension.
The Ascension Church is the oldest in the city. It is located along Furmanovskaya Street. The façade faces the park on the square. It was erected in 1727 at the request of the owner of the village, Major General Prince I.F. Baryatinsky, and was radically rebuilt in the 2nd floor. XIX century Closed in 1939, used as mechanical workshops. The upper volumes of the temple and bell tower have not survived. Returned to believers in 1993 and undergoing renovation. Judging by the original decor, preserved in the upper part of the quadrangle, the temple was designed in the traditions of pre-Petrine architecture.

__In terms of the number of domes (there are 21 domes in the temple), it is comparable only to the church in Kizhi, which has one more. In 1886-1887, a cemetery chapel was built on this site at the expense of local manufacturer Ivan Skvortsov,” says Nina Furmanova, head of the museum. Klyukina. – Later, in 1897-1905, a red-brick temple in the pseudo-Russian style (based on the traditions of ancient Russian architecture and folk art) was built here at the expense of the manufacturers Matryona Pavlova (Skvortsov’s daughter) and Pyotr Pavlov... As Nina Anatolyevna says, an interesting story is connected with the construction of this temple legend. Pyotr Alexandrovich and Matryona Ivanovna Pavlov had a son, Vladimir. Peter accidentally shot his son with a gun. According to one version - while hunting, according to another - near the house: having bought a gun in Kostroma, he decided to try it out and shot into the bushes, and his son was there. Still others say that he shot at a bird that sat on the railing, and at that time Vladimir came out of the door of the house. In memory of Pavlov’s son, they decided to build a church. — There are three thrones in the altar: in honor of the deceased son of Vladimir, Matryona’s brother Nikolai, who also died in childhood, and in honor of the icon “Joy of All Who Sorrow.” In 1905, the temple was consecrated by His Grace Vissarion, Bishop of Kostroma. “According to my memoirs, the bishop, who spent a lot of time in Moscow consecrating the temple, said: “I have consecrated many temples in my life, but this is the first time I am consecrating such a magnificent one,” says the head of the museum.

In the 70s of the 20th century there was not a single functioning temple on the territory of Furmanov. Perhaps no one then remembered exactly when the church bell rang for the last time in at least one of them. Many agree that it was the 30s. And the believers were forced to walk 10 kilometers to the nearest church in the village of Mikhailovskoye. We often returned home through Belino, where we waited for the bus to Furmanov. My great-grandmother Zoya Mikhailovna Oparina was a parishioner of that St. Michael’s Church. It was especially difficult in winter, in the severe frost. The temple was returned to believers in 1988. Before that, during Soviet times it was used as a dairy plant.

Versions about the origin of the name
There is no single version about the origin of the name of the village. Some researchers believe that the name comes from the market day that took place here on Wednesday (Wednesday).

Furmanov
At the origins – Sereda-Upino
Sereda-Upino, the name of the village located on the territory of the modern city of Furmanov, was first mentioned in written sources in 1628. At the beginning of the 17th century, it was in the possession of Prince Dmitry Mastryukovich of Cherkassy (a gift from Ivan IV the Terrible to the brothers of his bride Maria Temryukovna, a Kabardian princess who became the tsar’s second wife). Since 1688, the village was owned by Prince Fyodor Yuryevich Baryatinsky, from 1701 - by his widow, and then by his son, Major General Ivan Fedorovich Baryatinsky, an associate of Peter I. Later, Elena Ivanovna Bibikova, the sister of the Decembrists Matvey and Sergei Ivanovich Muravyov, became the owner of the village. Apostles. In the middle of the 19th century. the village of Sereda passed to the historian D.N. Bantysh-Kamensky.
Several versions are known about the origin of the name of the village. According to one of them, market day in the village was Wednesday (Wednesday), hence its name. According to another version, the village was called Sereda because it was located in the middle of the road between Nerekhta and Shuya and between Plyos and Ivanovo-Voznesensk.
In the middle of the 18th century. The postal trade route connecting Shuya and Nerekhta passed through the territory where the modern city of Furmanov is located. It was also called “Catherine’s Highway”, because Empress Catherine II paid special attention to this tract. It coincided with the current central streets of the city - Bolshaya Furmanovskaya, Socialist, Oktyabrskaya, Paris Commune. Until now, the route is popularly called the Great Road. There is a legend that in 1795, through Sereda-Upino from the side of Nerekhta along the Great Road, commander A. V. Suvorov, accompanied by his valet Prokhor Dubasov, drove to the village of Sarajevo, his patrimony.
In these places, people have long been engaged in agriculture and various crafts; in the summer they grew flax, made yarn, and wove canvas in the winter. The decree of 1775, which allowed peasant industry, gave impetus to the development of industry and crafts. This marked the beginning of the construction of small cloth, cotton, and linen factories. In the 19th century, the textile industry began to emerge in Sereda. The military-statistical review of the Russian Empire for 1848 noted that the village of Sereda was one of the centers of the factory industry, the best fairs for the sale of horses were held here, and the occupations of the population were flax spinning, “calico weaving,” and “absentee carpentry.”
In the List of populated places of the Kostroma province (1870–1872), Sereda-Upino is listed as a village in the Nerekhta district near ponds, on the trade route from the city of Nerekhta to the city of Shuya, 41 versts from the district town of Nerekhta. The village has 31 households and 551 residents of both sexes - 243 males and 308 females. Indicated: Orthodox Church, Seredskoe volost government, 3 fairs, weekly markets.
The development of the textile industry required reliable transport links. At the end of the 19th century. Construction of railways begins in the county. The owners of the factory in Dulyapin, the Malakhov brothers, built the Malakhovskaya station, and then they, together with the factory owners from Sereda Pavlov and Gorbunov, using a state loan, built a railway line from Sereda to Nerekhta. In the same period, from the Malakhovskaya station to the village of Dulyapino, a road was built through the marshy area for transporting goods by horse-drawn vehicles, which was nicknamed the “Malakhovsky tract”.
With the increase in the number of enterprises, the territory of the village expanded. In the historical center of Sereda stood the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, a parochial school, a volost administration, and a monument to Alexander II were located here. Opposite the temple there was the estate of the Poplavsky merchants, next to it the houses of the merchants Chirkovs, Mironovs, Istomins, Medvedevs, Stulovs and others. Here, in the central part, there was a public tavern and a fire department. The estate of the daughter of manufacturer I. Skvortsov, M. I. Kholcheva, stood apart.
Soviet period – the city of Furmanov
On the eve of the October Revolution of 1917, about 12 thousand textile workers worked in Sereda. At that time, the enterprises of Sered factory owners played a significant role in the textile industry of the Russian Empire. In 1918, all textile factories were nationalized.
On July 27, 1918, the village of Sereda was given the status of a city, which became the center of the Seredsky district of the newly formed Ivanovo-Voznesensk province. In 1926, the population of Sereda reached 21 thousand inhabitants.
With the further development of the textile industry, the city also developed. According to the 1939 census, over 36 thousand people lived here. The social sphere was developing. At the end of the 1930s. the city had two post offices, a telephone exchange, a radio center, a telegraph office, and a cinema. There were three libraries (two of them factory ones), a maternity hospital, three hospitals, kindergartens and schools.
On March 13, 1941, in connection with the 15th anniversary of the death of the writer, revolutionary and political figure Dmitry Andreevich Furmanov, a native of Sereda, the city received a new name - Furmanov.
During the Great Patriotic War, about 11 thousand Furmanovites took part in hostilities, 5,649 people did not return to their homes. For heroism and courage, 3,200 Furmanovites were awarded orders and medals, six received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, two people became full holders of the Order of Glory.
