Captivity

Most species of eagles are rare, so in order to preserve and increase their numbers, these birds began to be kept in captivity. We are talking about zoos, nature reserves, and nature parks.

Basic goals

There are several of them. Firstly, protecting the species from complete extinction, providing a food supply, and creating relatively safe conditions. Secondly, eagles are kept in zoos so that everyone can see what these proud, beautiful birds look like.

Cages, enclosures

Keeping an eagle in a cage is a mockery of the bird; it is not a canary, but a predator for which the ability to soar in air currents is vital. Therefore, birds are placed in enclosures; the larger the area, the better, because in their natural habitat any eagle will place its nest at a considerable distance from the nest of a relative.

Birds are often kept in pairs, which helps them reproduce. However, in any case, only the most experienced ornithologists can obtain offspring from a proud predator in captivity.

To breed eagles in captivity, it is necessary to create optimal conditions for the birds.

How to breed eagles in captivity

In zoos, when kept in open-air cages, it is difficult to force birds to mate, because for mating games they need the sky, as well as the spirit of competition. That is why relative success has been achieved in breeding birds in zoological parks, where conditions are as close as possible to natural ones.

The birds choose their own mates, obtain food, and the employees’ task is to ensure their protection from hunters and poachers; people do not interfere with the reproduction of birds in any other way. In practice, this option turned out to be the most effective.

How long do they live at home?

The average life expectancy in captivity is 40-45 years. According to ornithologists, this is not the limit.

Note! The record for longevity among eagles is 82 years.

Features of character and lifestyle

Eagles are among the monogamous birds that choose a partner once and for life. This determines their distribution patterns: birds often live exclusively in pairs. Eagles can even go out in pairs to hunt.

During their circling in the sky, they not only look out for possible prey, but also monitor the state of their territory, noting whether there are enemies nearby.

At the same time, eagles do not need to hunt every day, since they are able to store food in their crops for several days.

Although the traditional method of hunting for eagles is to soar high, they are also capable of ambushing their prey. Most often they hide in spreading branches of trees, from where they subsequently attack. The eagles deal with each victim in their own way.

Eagles do not hunt for as long as other birds of prey. They devote most of the day to observing their territory, studying everything that happens around them. The ability to preserve food helps them reduce their hunting time.

Main varieties

These predatory relatives of hawks and kites are so diverse that often representatives of the same species are completely different from each other.

Harpy (Filipino)

The harpy eagle is the largest species, reaching a weight of 7 kg and a wingspan of 2.25 m. Also known as the Philippine eagle, the Philippine monkey-eater. Very rare, in its historical homeland the murder of a harpy is punishable by a real prison sentence. Considered the national symbol of the Philippines. It is distinguished by brown colored plumage, while the peritoneum is buffy. There is a crest on the back of the head.

Food includes lemurs, monkeys, snakes, and other birds. Known for their monogamy and developed parental qualities.

Crowned

A large, beautiful bird, the crowned eagle, lives in Africa, where it hunts antelope for its food. For a long time, this bird is capable of sitting in “ambush” on tree branches, and upon noticing game, it rushes down, makes a lightning attack and flies away with the prey. Birds are social, capable of hunting in pairs: one lures an antelope or a primate, the other catches it.

At the moment, the number of birds is not in danger, but this does not mean that they can be thoughtlessly destroyed.

White

There is no such bird as a “white eagle” - this is the name of a musical group. Representatives of the world of birds are white-tailed and bald eagles.

The white-tailed eagle is a bird found in Russia, one of the rare ones and is protected by the Red Book. The average body length is 80 cm. Weight is 5-6 kg, a distinctive feature is the snow-white tail.

Note! They prefer to nest closer to the coasts, which is why they have earned the nickname “sea”.

The bald eagle belongs to the category of large birds, its wingspan reaches 2.1 m. It lives in North America and is a key character in the folklore tradition of the aboriginal population. Distinctive features:

  • Weight – up to 6 kg, body length – up to 1.3 m.
  • The beak is very large, hook-shaped, yellow.
  • The claws are curved and grow throughout life.
  • A characteristic feature is the brow ridges, which is why the eagle always has a stern expression.

15-20 years is how long an eagle lives in the wild.

The bald eagle looks very attractive thanks to its snow-white plumage

Blue and red

The blue variety is a non-existent bird, one of the signs of the Mayan calendar. The Red Eagle is also not a real bird, but the name of the series. Birds of prey are so interesting to people that they are used for various realities.

Mountain

All individuals are divided into steppe and mountain depending on their habitat. The latter prefer to settle at a considerable altitude above sea level, where they feel safe, far from places captured by people as a result of land development and their involvement in economic activities.

It is distinguished by a massive physique, a wingspan of more than 1.5 m. A powerful beak and tenacious paws, the ability to develop amazing speed, a fearless character - this is what an eagle looks like, what are the strengths of this beautiful bird. Mountain eagles can live at altitudes of more than 3 km above sea level.

Scavengers

Surprisingly, among the eagles there are those who prefer to feed on carrion, for which they have earned an unflattering nickname. An example of this variety is the burial ground, whose habitat is the steppe strip of Eurasia and the central regions of China. It prefers to live in open areas, but from time to time it flies into the forest to build a nest in the dense crown of tall trees. The main food of the burial ground is small rodents: gophers, gerbils, marmots, hares, and sometimes birds. However, during periods of hunger, it is content with carrion.

Interesting fact! The burial ground also has the more sonorous name “imperial eagle” due to its impressive size.

An alternative theory for the origin of the nickname scavenger is not a love of corpse food, but concern for deceased relatives. Some ornithologists of the past described how these eagles buried their dead brothers in the ground.

Despite the unattractive, even creepy name, the scavenger is quite a beautiful bird

What is Orel famous for?

On the station square of the city there is a sculpture “Eagle the Jubilee”, which is considered one of the main symbols of the city of Orel. The monument was erected in 2021. The sculpture is made of bronze and represents an eagle perched on a globe.

In the central part of the city there is Lenin Street, a pedestrian street, which is the main walking area of Orel. The length of the street is 600 m. Former noble mansions, cafes, and administrative offices are located here. In 1919, a museum of fine arts opened in Orel. To date, more than 7 thousand exhibits have been collected here: sculptures, paintings, objects of decorative and applied art.

Also in the city there is the I. S. Turgenev Museum, which is dedicated to the great Russian writer. The museum was opened at the beginning of the 20th century. In the historical center of the city there is the I. A. Bunin Museum, where a collection of letters, books, documents, manuscripts and personal belongings of the writer is collected.

Description and characteristics of the species

The eagle is a bird of the hawk family. There are real giants in the world, for example, harpies, as well as relatively small individuals. They are capable of flying at speeds of more than 220 km per hour, while the structural feature of the wings gives them the ability to normally stay in the air even during a hurricane. They can rise into the air to a height of more than 8 km, which is not given to every aircraft.

The beautiful feathered eagle is considered the embodiment of masculinity and courage.

Note! The expression “eagle vision” did not arise by chance; the bird’s eyes are so sharp that they can see a mouse from a height of more than 5 km. In this case, two objects can be simultaneously in the focus of each eye.

The species of eagles are varied, but several common characteristics can be identified:

  • The length of the dense muscular body is 85-95 cm, in some species it can exceed 1 m. Moreover, females are slightly larger than males.
  • Weight – from 2.5 to 7 kg.
  • Developed strong paws are “dressed” in pants made of softer plumage than on the rest of the body.
  • The eyeballs are inactive, but have well-developed peripheral vision.
  • The claws are powerful and closed, thanks to which the predator manages to deftly grab prey and soar into the sky with it.
  • The wings are very wide and strong, allowing the bird of prey to soar in the air for a long time, tracking down prey.
  • The tail is short and narrow; in some eagles it is a fan or wedge.

Note! Some representatives of the breed have an original decoration - tufts of feathers on their heads.

The color can be either plain or variegated. The golden eagle is an eagle, painted in black and brown tones with golden feathers on the back of its head, which is why its second name is “golden eagle”. There are also white-headed individuals, whose distinctive characteristic is also obvious - white plumage on the head.

Natural habitats

The habitat of eagles is quite extensive, and each species has chosen unique territories for itself. It is worth noting that there is one feature: these places are located as far as possible from a person and his life activities. In this regard, eagles are found more often in mountainous areas or in semi-open landscapes.

If we take golden eagles, they live on the territory of our country, starting from the North Caucasus and ending with the southern regions of Primorye. For their nesting they choose hard-to-reach forest areas. Wedge-tailed golden eagles, which can be considered relatives of golden eagles, prefer to nest in forest plantations of New Guinea. Steppe eagles live in steppe zones, as well as semi-desert zones located between Transbaikalia and the Black Sea coast.

Imperial Eagles have long been found in the forest-steppe zones of Ukraine, in the steppes of Kazakhstan, in the forests of the Czech Republic, Romania and Spain. In addition, similar species of eagles live in the territories of Iran and China, Slovakia and Hungary, Germany and Greece, as well as other European countries.

Many peoples tame golden eagles and then use them in hunting as birds of prey.

Diet

The diet of eagles is quite extensive, and mainly consists of objects of animal origin, often quite large, although these food objects are mainly small hares, gophers, birds and fish. If eagles go hungry for a long time, they can easily feed on carrion, which they find either on land or in water.

Interesting information! The raptors have been documented to feed on a wide variety of animals, including black lofurs, domestic and wild chickens, spur and bush partridges, green and domestic pigeons, kingfishers and even squirrels.

If the hunt is successful, the eagles eat their prey immediately or feed it to the chicks. Some species of eagles hunt quite poisonous snakes. After eating, the eagle drinks it with plenty of water and begins to tidy up its plumage.
